Focus on Safety – Halloween tips and treats

-

Editor’s note: Stormy weather is forecasted for Halloween in Naperville. Trick-or-treaters are reminded to stay warm, dry and wear the appropriate clothing.  Naperville doesn’t have official trick-or-treat hours, but 4-8PM is recommended. Remember, if you see something, say something and be safe.

Hello, Naperville Residents! My name is Julie Smith. I am the new Crime Prevention Specialist at the Naperville Police Department. I look forward to drawing from my experience as a former Police Officer to inform you about various topics of Crime Prevention throughout the year.

October is an exciting month! The autumn crispness is in the air and Halloween is just around the corner. Since October is Crime Prevention month, it is only fitting that I talk about some Halloween safety tips. Halloween can be a lot of fun for parents and kids alike—if everybody remembers the tricks and treats of playing it safe. Here are some pointers:

‘Unhaunting’ your house

  • Welcome trick-or-treaters at home by turning on your exterior lights.
  • Remove objects from your yard that might present a hazard.
  • Drive SLOWLY throughout neighborhoods! You never know what creature may suddenly cross your path.

Making Safe Costumes

  • Check that costumes are flame-retardant.
  • Keep costumes short to prevent trips and falls.
  • Use make-up instead of a mask. Masks obstruct a child’s vision.
  • Have your kids wear light colors or put reflective tape on their costumes to be highly visible.

Preparing for Tricks and Treats

  • Have older kids go out with friends and use the buddy system.
  • Younger children should be accompanied by an adult.
  • Remind children to use sidewalks, and to cross only at street corners.
  • Remind your kids NEVER to enter a stranger’s house or car.
  • Create a map of a safe trick-or-treating route and set a time limit for the night.

The Treats

I know it’s hard for kids to hold back from eating their treats until they get home, but it’s important. Be sure to check your child’s candy for anything unwrapped or homemade. And if you’re like me, always “check” that peanut butter chocolate-covered morsel first!
