The DuPage Children’s Museum offers many activities, classes and special events that will be happening in the Museum and throughout the community during the month of November.

DCMStudio Drop-ins, Storytimes, Third Thursday, and other events listed are free for Museum members and/or with Museum admission, and no pre-registration is required. Creativity Classes require pre-registration and separate fees. Registration closes one week prior to the start of most classes, and classes fill quickly. Storytime in the Family Resource Center

Friday, November 1, 10 – 11AM

Enjoy an interactive story hour with DCM’s very own Ben Webber. Ben uses his performing arts talents to engage children in stories that are fun and entertaining for the entire family! Free with Museum membership or admission.

Quilts of Gee’s Bend, Studio Drop-in

Friday, November 1 – Saturday, November 2, 10AM – Noon, 1 – 3PM

Sunday, November 3, 1 – 3PM

The Creativity Studio is quilting! Choose from a range of fabrics to add your design to DCM’s quilt! Explore the quilts of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, for inspiration. Check the website to view a weekly schedule of alternating math, science, and art-focused activities in the Museum’s Creativity Studio.

Mexican Papercutting, Studio Drop-in

Monday, November 4 – Saturday, November 9, 10AM – Noon, 1 – 3PM,

Sunday, November 10, 1 – 3PM

Papel Picado or “perforated paper” is a Mexican Folk Art using tissue paper. Join us as we decorate the Creativity Studio with this beautiful art form. Check the website to view a weekly schedule of alternating math-, science-, and art-focused activities in the Museum’s Creativity Studio.

Creativity Class: Candy Chemistry, A Start in S.T.E.M.™ series class (Ages 4-6)

Tuesday, November 5, 4 – 5PM

Candy and cakes are created with chemical concoctions, also known as recipes. Put candy to good use while discovering how sweet chemistry can be. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. Member/Child Partner $15, Nonmember/Child Partner $21.

Art Olympics, Studio Drop-in

Monday, November 11 – Saturday, November 16, 10AM – Noon, 1 – 3PM,

Sunday, November 17, 1 – 3PM

Participate in these artistic feats and celebrate your creativity at the opening of our new exhibit, Monumental. Draw without lifting your pencil or drawing tool. How many shades of green can you make? Build the smallest scale model of your house. Draw an upside-down self-portrait. Draw with your non-dominant hand. Creativity Class: Crazy Color Combinations, A My First Mess™ Series Class (Ages 18-24 months)

Private Event: Monumental Exhibit Opening & Ribbon Cutting

Friday, November 15, 5:30 – 7:30PM

Join us for a private opening of our newest exhibit, Monumental! Museum members, sponsors, and donors will have an exclusive opportunity to be the first to experience our exciting new addition to the Creativity Connections Neighborhood. Children will examine extraordinary features of Greek and Mayan architecture as they play and learn in entirely new ways! Please Note: This is a private event and the Museum will close to the general public at 4PM.

Exhibit Opening: Monumental

Saturday, November 16, During Museum Hours

Investigate epic feats of engineering, explore colossal cultures of the past, and discover magnificent masterpieces! In DCM’s newest exhibit, Monumental, children will examine extraordinary features of Greek and Mayan architecture as they play and learn in entirely new ways! Recreate the famous pyramids at Chichen Itza using building blocks and stones or construct your very own version of the Acropolis. Using interactive components, children can place themselves among mythological icons of ancient times or use costumes and props for exciting dramatic play. Children will also develop a greater understanding of the power of light and shadow on architecture and explore concepts of scale and proportion as they compare their own foot to that of a six foot replica of Athena’s foot! Don’t miss this spectacular new addition to the Creativity Connections Neighborhood!

Amate Painting, Studio Drop-in

Monday, November 18 – Saturday, November 23, 10AM – Noon, 1 – 3PM.

Sunday, November 24, 1 – 3PM

Also known as Mexican Bark Painting, this is one of the many traditional crafts of Mexico. Use vibrant colors to create your own Amate painting on craft paper. Check the website to view a weekly schedule of alternating math-, science-, and art-focused activities in the Museum’s Creativity Studio.

Insect Zoo by Anderson Pest Solutions

Wednesday, November 20, 10AM – noon

Have you ever wanted to get nose-to-nose with a praying mantis? Pet a giant pumpkin millipede as long as your hand? See how far a giant lubber grasshopper can jump? The experts from Anderson Pest Solutions will introduce children to nature’s most interesting bugs. Find out how, as nature’s recyclers, these insects contribute to our environment. Open to all ages and free with Museum membership or admission.

Third Thursday

Thursday, November 21, 5 – 7PM

Third Thursday is a time designated for families of children with special needs to enjoy the Museum. DCM is an ideal location for all learning abilities. Special activities last until 7:00 p.m. All activities are free with admission or membership. The Museum is open to the public until 8:00 p.m. and everyone is welcome.

Family Fun Friday Night: Weber School of Irish Dance

Friday, November 22, 6 – 8PM

Weber School of Irish Dance is one of the largest and most well-known Irish dance companies in the Chicago area. Lively, fun Celtic jigs, reels, hornpipes, and set dances will have everyone wanting to join in on stage. As a force for leading the direction of Irish dance for over forty years, Weber School of Irish Dance provides an entertaining show, followed by one-on-one time with children to help them learn a step or two themselves. Join us for this exciting Family Fun Friday Night!

Self Portraits/Art of Frida Kahlo, Studio Drop-in

Monday, November 25 – Saturday, November 30, 10AM – Noon, 1 – 3PM,

Use our small hand mirrors to study your face and create a unique self-portrait. “I paint myself because I am the subject I know best,” said Frida Kahlo. Draw what you know best!
