A Naperville Gardener – The ‘Spirit of the American Navy’

-

Since 1926, “The Spirit of the American Doughboy” has stood in Burlington Square Park, near the 5th Avenue train station. He was purchased by the Naperville American Legion Post 43 to honor those who served in World War I and re-dedicated in 2003 after a much-needed restoration.

Navy spirit arrives _DSC1114If funding goes well, he soon will be joined by his “brother” sculpture, “The Spirit of the American Navy.” The two men will face each other from opposite sides of the park, each raising an arm to greet the other. Century Walk funds have purchased the sculpture, but money is needed for the base, a granite pedestal, sidewalks, benches, lighting and landscaping.

A few years ago, the Naperville Garden Club added a Blue Star Memorial Marker to Burlington Square Park, with support from the City of Naperville and the Naperville Park District. It took us a couple of years of planning and fundraising leading to a meaningful dedication on Armed Forces Day in May 2008, honoring those who have served, are serving or will serve to protect the United States of America.

The “Spirit of the American Navy” sculpture will be near our marker and the Naperville Garden Club is proud to contribute to this new project and help the “Spirit of the American Navy” join his companion after all these years.

The “Spirit of the American Navy” is scheduled to be dedicated at 2PM on Sun., Oct. 13, but funds still are welcomed to complete the project. Oct. 13, 2013, was chosen as the date for the dedication because it is the 238th anniversary of the Navy.

With the Spirit of the Navy sculpture now perched in the distance, the Blue Star Memorial welcomes visitors to Burlington Square Park.

The Century Walk Corporation purchased the sculpture and the Naperville Park District will maintain the park. The City of Naperville is helping with the funding and it is hoped that you, too, will make your donation and be a part of the history of Naperville. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.

Checks can be mailed to: Century Walk Corporation, 34 W. Chicago Ave. Suite B, Naperville, IL 60540.
