Wynton Marsalis returns

This is the second appearance by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra at North Central College. The premiere concert in the College’s new Wentz Concert Hall was held Sept. 30, 2008, featuring Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Orchestra.

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, featuring 15 of today’s finest jazz soloists and ensemble players, has been the resident orchestra at New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center since 1988. The ensemble was formed by Jazz at Lincoln Center managing and artistic director Wynton Marsalis and includes members of his septet and surviving members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

With Marsalis as music director, Jazz and Lincoln Center Orchestra spends more than a third of the year on tour. The remarkably versatile band performs original works, arrangements and a vast repertoire of masterpieces by legends, including Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henerson, Count Basie and more. The group also regularly premieres works commissioned from a range of such composers as Benny Carter, Chico O’Farrill, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Lavano, Christian McBride and current and former Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra members Marsalis, Ted Nash and Wycliffe Gordon.

In recent years the ensemble has performed collaborations with a variety of the world’s leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Russian National Orchestra, and the Chicago and London Symphony Orchestras.

Recordings of the ensemble’s concerts have aired in the United States, France, England, Brazil and other countries. PBS stations nationwide have carried eight “Live From Lincoln Center” broadcasts, including the “Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Higher Ground Benefit Concert.” This concert raised funds for the Higher Ground Relief Fund, established by Jazz at Lincoln Center and administered through the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to benefit musicians, music industry-related enterprises and other individuals who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.
