During last night’s (Tues., Sept. 17) Naperville City Council meeting Mayor George Pradel requested Chief of Police Robert W. Marshall to provide an update on the recent residential burglaries that Naperville has experienced.
Chief Marshall’s Response:
In the past 6 weeks, Naperville has had 29 residential burglaries with the majority happening in the South in a 20 square mile area as well as an area North of Ogden Ave. A large number of these incidents are occurring without force entry.
Thanks to the community response, over the last 3 weeks the Police Department has received 628 calls of suspicious persons/incidents. In that same time period, Police Officers have made 882 traffic stops.
The Police Department has suspects and is actively working on leads. We believe there are 3 to 4 groups working separately. They are targeting jewelry, cash and electronics. We are actively investigating all the incidents and are in the neighborhoods in marked and unmarked vehicles. As with any investigation, we are utilizing all of our tactics to catch these criminals. We want to continue to work with the community and will update information on the city website every 72 hours or as information becomes available. The Chief also would like to commend the officers and detectives who continue to work diligently on these cases.
Here are some things residents can do to help:
- Lock your doors and windows.
- Make sure your garage door is closed.
- Put your indoor and outdoor lights on timers to give the appearance that the home is occupied.
- Be a vigilant neighbor; if you notice something out of the ordinary call the Police.
- Don’t pass along unverified information.
- Notify the Police in a timely manner.
