Somm-o-logue – Adam’s Oktoberfest special

-

Wine is my passion, beer is my hobby and it’s the time of year I begin my annual hunt for Oktoberfest style beer.

One of my favorite craft breweries is Two Brothers Brewery located just over the border in Warrenville and it’s that time of year for one of their most famous seasonal releases, Atom Smasher.

Two Brothers created Atom Smasher in honor of their neighbor Fermilab, and also a now off-line particle accelerator. (Perhaps a big magnet brew is in the works).

Atom Smasher is an Oktoberfest, or technically speaking, Märzen style of lager. Traditionally, Oktoberfest was brewed in the spring marking the end of the brewing season and aged over the warm summer months. It has notes of malt and caramel, with a good mouth-feel – perfectly suited to enjoy at fall celebrations (and all October).

Atom Smasher was recently tapped at Heaven on Seven in downtown Naperville during Labor Day weekend.

In a past life, I came into work one day and a former boss was asking about Adam Special. I replied staunchly, “What are you talking about?”

“The guy at the bar wants Adam Special.”

Replying again, “What are you talking about?” I was even more confused and went to the bar to talk to the guest.

“You look like a beer geek,” the guest said noticing my entry.

“No, wine geek, but beer is my hobby.” I replied.

The client was from Delaware and lived down the street from famous Dogfish Head Brewery – he knew all about Atom Smasher.

I then had a really neat conversation with the guest about Two Brothers, Atom Smasher, and all the cool brewing stuff they are doing.

There are also many other good uses for Atom Smasher. I have made apple butter with it and spread it on English muffins.

The Atom Smasher apple butter mixes well with Bourbon and Whiskey for cocktail making. I’ve used it to make hot toddies.

The “Adam Special” story of my former boss is still quite humorous to this day and I hope they’ll never confuse smashing specials this time of year, again.

Atom Smasher will be making its rounds throughout local stores in the upcoming weeks and usually sells out quickly.

Editor’s Note:  In September 2003, Chef Jimmy Banno’s opened the doors to Heaven on Seven at 224 S. Main Street in downtown Naperville.  Congratulations on the first 10 years of delicious creole-style food, a great selection of craft beers on tap as well as friendly service all around. The New Orleans-style restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day, with brunch served every Saturday and Sunday.
