Naperville Area Humane Society hosts Annual Black Cat Ball
The Naperville Area Humane Society (NAHS) extends an invitation to the community to attend its annual Black Cat Ball gala, on Friday, October 4, at Hilton Lisle/Naperville.
The black tie optional event will begin with cocktails at 6PM, followed by dinner, program and live auction beginning at 7PM. A silent auction will also help raise vital funds for the Naperville Area Humane Society. Guests will enjoy a festive evening of dining and dancing, all to support our community’s homeless pets.
Tickets are $125 (prior to Oct. 6 2013) and $150 per person (after Oct. 6). Table sponsorships are available for $1,400, which also include recognition in the event program, and a private shelter tour. Funds raised directly benefit the animals and programs of the Naperville Area Humane Society.
Since 1979, the Naperville Area Humane Society has been providing animal welfare assistance and humane education programs to the benefit of the Naperville area communities. In addition to finding new homes for cats and dogs, NAHS provides much needed humane education programs, pet therapy, shelter for animals from homes of domestic abuse, volunteer opportunities and much more.

High School Football returns to Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium this October
Area High school rivals will battle it out on the grid iron at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium this October on the campus of North Central College.
The Prairie Classic, Waubonsie Valley vs. Neuqua Valley , will kick off at 7:30PM on Friday, October 11. The Wes Spencer Cross Town Classic, Naperville North vs. Naperville Central, will begin at 7:30PM Friday, October 25. Sophomore games begin at 5PM each respective day.
DuPagePads Run 4 Home set for September 7
DuPagePads is calling all walkers and runners, individuals and families to the 9th Annual Run 4 Home on Saturday, September 7 at 8AM, beginning at 703 W. Liberty in Wheaton. The new 10K and 5K CARA approved course will appeal to serious runners, casual joggers and walkers.

New angel group launched in western suburbs
The recently formed West Suburban Angels, Inc. are now planning their first angel presentation forum for fall. Startups and entrepreneurs from the Midwest will have the opportunity to raise funding and receive support from an elite group of investors.
Co-founders Kenn Miller, Joe Zhu and Mike Healy have assembled a group of investors, advisors, sponsors and partners to take advantage of the growing need for early stage investing in the western suburbs of Chicago.
“We are very excited about the opportunity as the reception from investors, entrepreneurs and the community has been very positive for a needed link between start-ups and capital,” said Kenn Miller, a Naperville entrepreneur.

Linden Oaks Recovery Day is set for September 14
Linden Oaks at Edward will host its annual Recovery Day on Saturday, September 14, from 11AM to 1PM in the Linden Oaks Healing Garden on the campus of Edward Hospital, 801 S. Washington St. in Naperville. Recovery Day celebrates the successes of those who are in recovery from chemical dependency and serves as a reminder of the commitment to those who still need support.

City offers Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes, register by September 19
The City of Naperville will again offer its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes this October. The free classes will take place from 6:45 to 9:30PM on Wednesday, October 2 and 9; Thursday, October 17; and Wednesday, October 23 as well as 8AM to 2:30PM on Saturday, October 26. Colleges of Distinction is a college guide that considers the views of guidance counselors, educators and admissions professionals to honor colleges that excel in four areas of undergraduate education: student engagement in the educational process, great teaching, vibrant learning communities and successful outcomes.
Colleges of Distinction bases its findings on surveys of college admission experts around the country and interviews with staff and faculty at each accepted college. Qualitative factors considered include student engagement and quality of teaching, and the guide also takes into account such quantitative data as graduation rates and class sizes.

Blood, Sweat & Tears will perform Oct. 19 at Pfeiffer Hall
Blood, Sweat & Tears performs its blend of classic rock and jazz October 19 at North Central College.
The Grammy Award-winning group topped the Billboard charts with such hit singles as “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy,” “And When I Die” and “Spinning Wheel.”
In 2011 Blood, Sweat & Tears played three sold-out concerts at the world famous Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City with the legendary trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.

Visit Veterans, play Bingo
Every month from September to June on the second Tuesday, a motorcoach departs at 6:30PM from the Judd Kendall, VFW Post 3873, 908 W. Jackson Ave. with folks eager to spread good cheer to veterans receiving treatment at Hines VA Hospital in Maywood.
The public is welcome to help fill the motorcoach again on Tuesday, September 10.

Serendipity Shop seeks donations year-round
The Serendipity Resale Shop is a volunteer-run shop, located at 12 W. Jefferson Ave. in downtown Naperville.
Donations of clean, gently-used men’s, women’s and children’s clothing of all sizes are welcome. Donors are asked not to include items that are stained or torn. The resale shop is in need of linens and home decorating items, such as lamps, dishes and clocks as well as household items, jewelry and collectibles.

The Early School Leaver Program (ESLP) is a unique program offering free GED preparation, workplace skill-building, and specific career training for DuPage residents aged 17-21. Hesed House to welcome new executive director
The Board of Trustees of Hesed House announced in August that they have selected an Executive Director to succeed Ryan Dowd.
Michael Cobb has dedicated his life—and career—to serving those who are less fortunate in our communities.
Prior to being named the Executive Director of Hesed House, Cobb served as the Interim Executive Director/Chief Operating Officer for South Suburban PADS, an interfaith agency serving the homeless population in over 52 communities in suburban Cook County. While at PADS he oversaw the successful completion of a 77-unit Permanent Supportive Housing apartment complex specifically for those who are experiencing homelessness.
