Plan to wake up to the 2013 Last Fling Bed Races on Aug. 31! And if you’d like to compete in one of the most popular Last Fling events under the sun, begin building a bed racer today.
First created as a Jaycees event that ran its course, then brought back to Porter Street behind Naper Settlement during Naper Days now on hiatus, then canceled in 2012 on account of a rainy weather forecast, the exciting Bed Races are back on track for the 2013 Last Fling.
The Jaycees mascot, Frank E. Fling, will show entrants how to muster the Bed Races when they begin at 11AM Sat., Aug. 31.
The team from St. Patrick’s Residence is the defending champ. Will the Nuns on the Run have the luck of the Irish? Or, as Frank E. Fling wants to know, will another team catch up by the end of the last heat for the 2013 victory?
Teams include families, businesses, nonprofit groups, churches and clubs. A variety of “decked-out beds” will take to the street while competing for the fastest times and best design.
“The five-person teams dress in wild and crazy costumes to compete in this wacky task,” organizers say. “No sleeping allowed!”
The creative designs of the bed racers always have been among the most innovative features of the Last Fling, a four-day family-friendly festival with many events and activities all along the Jackson Avenue, the Riverwalk and Rotary Hill and throughout Naper Settlement.
Stay tuned for updates. Join hundreds of bed-racing enthusiasts who gather to watch the friendly competition with cheers and applause. Know that if your bed racer loses, plenty of comforters will be lined up along the track to get you through the event.
Meanwhile, if your business or organization wants to enter the race, contact Jeffrey Ross at jr@jeffreyworks.com.
