Video Voice – End of summer could be the beginning

by Jane Wernette

New NCTV17 LogoWith the new school year on the horizon, many of the summer interns at NCTV17 are getting ready to head back to the classroom. But when they go, they will take with them a valuable lesson: hands-on experience!

Since it opened its doors in 1987, NCTV17 has dedicated itself to educating the next generation of broadcast and media professionals. The station offers year-round internships for both high school and college students who want real world experience in broadcasting, marketing, or graphics.

“I enjoy working here because you get hands-on experience in all areas; you’re not confined to one particular job,” said Lauren Kerbs, a current production services intern. “What makes it fun is that you get to do something new each day.”

Community Education Director Marc Dalquist coordinates the student intern program and assigns students to work with our NCTV17 reporters, videographers, marketing and production specialists, “I really try to find things that actively engage the students. I make sure they’re on track, active on the job and involved in what they are interested in.” That involvement might include helping research a news story, shadowing the Director at the Little League Game or helping run camera at the Naperville Municipal Band concert.

With the valuable experience gained here in Naperville, many NCTV17 interns have gone on to a variety of successful journalism careers, including morning news anchors, sports broadcasters, reporters and marketing specialists working for major media corporation affiliates such as ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX and NBC.

So whether your child’s life dream is to become a news anchor or they simply want to see if journalism is the field for them, NCTV17 shows them what that career path might look like.

It may be nearing the end of summer, but at NCTV17 learning is always in season.
