Just back from the biggest pet trade show in this country, I found real comfort in being around people who do what you do. They get it. They understand the long hours and the passion that you bring to your business.
It just feels good to know that you’re not alone. I was fortunate to be asked to speak to a small group of like-minded folks about our switch from selling breeder dogs to doing rescue exclusively.
Turnout was good—about 25 to 30 people—from rescues all the way to multi-store chains. I am very proud of what we do and how we do it. It’s very easy for me to pass along the information.
Of course, my Power Point program quit half way through the presentation, but it was only a minor bump in the road.
Our business model isn’t for everyone, but I love it. And I’m convinced every store can make rescue work in one form or another just about anywhere.
I spoke for more than 45 minutes and the question and answer period was equally as long. My measure of success is that no one fell asleep and no one walked out.
The questions were kind and serious. Concerns reflected a deep thought about how this could work in their business. If I can get just one store to make the change, I’ll have been a success.
I’ve been asked to speak at the Backers show in Chicago this September. Perhaps another pet store will see the light and I’ll be on my way.
