New trail is taking shape around May Watts Pond

-

May Watts Park, just as the elementary school adjacent to it in the West Wind subdivision, is named for May Theilgaard Watts (1893 – 1975), writer, teacher, founder of the Illinois Prairie Path and former Naperville resident.

This week, work to construct a walking trail of its own is evident to neighbors who enjoy May Watts Park throughout the year. The Naperville Park District will add a limestone walking trail, providing a scenic walk through the park, with an entrance located at 804 S. Whispering Hills Drive.

Following a series of meetings with residents in 2011 and 2012, always with public notices posted at the park site to give neighbors a heads up, the Park District and the stakeholder group agreed on a basic layout of the trail. In 2012, the Park District conducted an engineering study which confirmed the feasibility of the site layout plan that had been approved by the stakeholder group. This layout plan can be viewed on the Naperville Park District’s website at the following link: http://www.napervilleparks.org/parks/may-watts-park.

When finished, the trail will connect the north entrance of the park at Sequoia Road to the south entrance at Oakton Lane, including a loop around the southern portion of the pond.

According to the history revealed in the series of surveys over the years, trails continue to be one of the most desired park amenities in our community.

This photo represents another timely development from “across the pond.”

“People are out walking all year round, enjoying the outdoors while getting the exercise they need,” noted Director of Planning Eric Shutes.

PN’s cameras caught plenty of activity across the pond as construction workers make way for the trail to be completed this summer.

For more specific information or comments, contact Shutes via e-mail at eshutes@napervilleparks.org.
