44th Annual AAUW Naperville Area Book Sale / 10AM – 8PM / Proceeds support scholarships and fellowships for women and programs that empower women and girls. 40,000 items, all donated! Books: hardcover and paperback; music CD’s and Vinyl; DVD’s. Most items priced $1 -$2.50 with the exception of Collector’s Corner and Specialty priced items. Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry presents ‘Day Without Hunger’ / Noon: The day begins with a Veterans of Foreign Wars flag ceremony, complete with bagpiper, and a visit from Mayor Pradel. The opening ceremony will be followed by a remote broadcast until 2PM by morning DJ, Scott Mackay (“Mackay in the Morning”) of 95.9 The River.

Noon – 6PM: FREE activities, including DuPage Children’s Museum interactive exhibits, University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners’ take-home plantings, Hix Bros bands, and so much more. Multicultural exhibits will include tastings from ethnic restaurants, and performances by the Xilin Arts Center. Momma Cuisine and Zapatista will conduct food demonstrations.

Noon – 7PM: FREE Community BBQ includes Casey’s Foods brats, Hebrew National hot dogs, Cargill burgers, and PepsiCo products, to name a few. Belgio’s Catering will be behind the grill and offering tasty side dishes.

7-10PM: Enjoy music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s performed by The Captains (of Industry), a band largely composed of Hix Bros music teachers. Adult beverages will be available, with snacks provided by Whole Foods.

This free event is presented by BMO Harris Bank and partially funded with a grant from the City of Naperville SECA fund.

Flags on Rotary HillIt’s Flag Day! Celebrate with Friends of Jack Shiffler at the VFW / 5 – 9PM / Did you know? The Stars and Stripes became the official U.S. Flag on June 14, 1777. Dolly McCarthy and Marty Walker have organized a party for friends of Jack Shiffler – at the VFW 908 West Jackson Ave. – to honor him on Flag Day for his many years of service to our nation in the U.S. Marine Corps as well as to the Naperville Marines Birthday Ball, the Memorial Day Parade and Labor Day Parade. The tribute also is a fundraiser to raise the funds to have Shiffler’s portraiture immortalized on the Century Walk mural, “Naperville Loves a Parade” along Rubins Way in downtown Naperville. Join friends and family for an all-American dinner of hamburgers and hot dogs. Suggested donation $25.

Brightside Theatre presents RENT / 8PM / This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award rock opera shakes up the modern musical as we know it as it blazes across our stage. Based on Puccini’s La Boheme, Rent tells the story of one year in the life of a group of friends who are impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in the New York City’s Lower East Side. See just how much can change or doesn’t change in the 525, 600 minutes that make up a year. Performances held at the Theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall at North Central College, 31 S. Ellsworth. Summer Bird Walks at Morton Arboretum / 8 – 10:30AM / Learn about the summer resident birds, their preferred haunts, foraging needs and nesting behavior with an expert guide at the Morton Arboretum, 4100 Route 53 in Lisle. Classes are held from 8 to 10:30AM on Saturdays, June 1, June 15, July 6, July 20, August 3 or August 17. The July 6 class is open to families with children ages 6 and up. (sub)URBAN ART WALK / Noon – 4PM / The (sub)URBAN ART WALK, an exhibit of juried art that will be displayed in shops along Naperville’s main streets, is planned from noon to 4PM on Sat., June 15. Now in its second year, this collaborative effort between three area non-profits, Arranmore Arts, the Downtown Naperville Alliance (DNA) and the Naperville Art League (NAL), promises to present an exciting art experience while giving attendees the opportunity to discover and explore over 25 of Naperville’s unique shops and boutiques.

Sponsored by john greene Realtor, Naperville Bank & Trust and the DNA, the (sub)URBAN ART WALK gives the selected exhibiting artists a chance to compete for cash prizes when their work is evaluated by judges hired by the art walk’s organizers. Attendees will also be able to cast a vote for their favorites for the People’s Choice Award. Ballots, maps of artist locations and complimentary refreshments will be on hand at Liam Brex Design Studio, 222 S. Main, the starting point of the tour.

Oswald’s Annual Diabetes Day / 9AM – 2PM / Studies show more than half of all Americans will have diabetes or prediabetes by the year 2020. In an effort to educate the community about diabetes, Oswald’s Pharmacy located in Naperville Plaza is hosting its fourth annual Diabetes Day on June 15 between 9-2PM. The event is for anyone currently living with diabetes, family members living with a diabetic or those looking to prevent diabetes. Oswald’s Pharmacy is located in Naperville Plaza, Washington and Gartner.
