Nutrition Knowledge – SPRING into action

-

mintaWith the weather finally warming up and summer at our doorstep, spring is a great time of year to look at our health habits and consider a makeover. So let’s S-P-R-I-N-G into action.

Step it Up – It is a great time to get outdoors to take a walk or jog. Adding steps to our day can help burn the calories needed to take off those extra pounds. We should try to work our way to 10,000 steps per day.

Portion Control – Reduce calories by decreasing portion size. Measuring our food is a good way to know how much we are actually taking in, but if that is too time consuming, try using a smaller plate.

Recipes – Cooking at home can dramatically cut down on the amount of calories we eat because we can control the ingredients that go into the recipe and use healthier options.

Involve the Family – Research shows that when children are involved in planning and preparing meals, they are more likely to eat it. Children can choose recipes, help with cooking, and set the table.

New Foods – Try a new fruit or vegetable. Let children take turns choosing something new in the produce section and then try it at dinner and give the new food a “score” like an Olympic event.

Grow Your Own – Even if we don’t have a yard or large plot to till up for vegetables, both veggies and herbs can be grown in containers. Leafy greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, and even certain types of strawberries are all good candidates for a container garden. Not only will we have fresh produce, but we will also save money. (Aeroponic gardening is made easy with the Tower Garden that can be viewed on my website.)
