A designer’s job is not to decorate for what we like, we are to decorate for the homeowners taste and lifestyle. Sometimes finding out what that is can be difficult. Even as someone tries to communicate likes and dislikes, things can get lost in translation.
On the fabulous Internet, websites are helping designers know what is in our client’s brains. I have had many clients open pictures on their tablets to show me downloaded photos of complete room scenes or particular products photos. This process helps us so much.
Just like when you bring a picture of a hair cut to your hair stylist. Photos can help us see visually your thoughts and taste.
Our favorite site for great photos right now is www.houzz.com. This website is the Pinterest for designers, builders, and architects. Individuals in need of decorating inspiration can browse through thousands of photos from all over the country. You can find anything from bathroom renovations, fun paint colors, to dressing a fireplace mantel.
I tell my clients to download photos or print them out and keep in a design folder for when we meet. Old-fashioned magazines or catalogs photos work, too.
