Father’s Day Weekend 1988 was the beginning of a wonderful tradition in Naperville known as Ribfest, a family-friendly barbecue festival that grew to be linked with Independence Day every July.
No one would have imagined that an idea brought to the Exchange Club from Glen Ekey, the Executive Director of the Naperville Park District at that time, would have developed into such a huge success that has helped so many community organizations via its allocations and grants.
The 2013 event will mark the 26th Ribfest, an event focused on the family that has seen many changes throughout the years. This year’s Main Stage concert line up is outstanding. Kicking off the event on July 3 is STYX, on July 4 is Casey James and Love & Theft, July 5 is Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators will be performing and July 6 is Rick Springfield. Lynryd Skynryd will close the event on Sun., July 7.
The Fire Works co-sponsored by the Exchange Club and the City of Naperville will be held on Independence Day, Thurs., July 4. All in all, this year’s Ribfest will be an experience of a lifetime.
This year I am fortunate to work with Ray Kinney on the entertainment committee. I think we have such a well-rounded list of entertainers that everyone should enjoy at least one of them.
New this year will be a food tent on both the North and South side of the park to make it more convenient. Still, to be on the safe side, bring a blanket or your lawn chairs.
Meanwhile, remember you are always welcome to join us for a luncheon meeting on the first and third Fridays at noon at Hugo Frog Pond. We welcome your interest in our club as we’re always seeking new members who embrace our mission.
