St. Raphael students place high at State Spelling Bee

Two 7th-grade students from St. Raphael Catholic School won first and second place in the Knights of Columbus state spelling bee recently in Chatham, Ill.

Eva Analitis, age 12, won first place and her classmate Jacqueline Schuman, age 13, placed second. Earlier that day, Analitis also won the state championship in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw contest for her age division.

“Both the state spelling bee and free throw contest are held on the same day a few miles apart, in case kids are competing in both,” noted Chuck Burkart, Knights of Columbus local spelling bee chairman. “But, we can’t remember a time when the same person won both competitions. Plus, having two students from one school win first and second place in the spelling bee…That’s incredible!”

“We are so proud of these two girls,” said St. Raphael Principal Mary Rehfield. “It’s an amazing accomplishment that shows their strength as independent learners and athletes.”

The Knights of Columbus has been hosting a spelling bee competition for 31 years, topped by the Free Throw contest for 41 years.

St. Raphael Catholic School, located in Naperville,  teaches students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade.
