As a publication long recognized for its leadership and listings regarding rankings of the best colleges, graduate schools, hospitals and cars, U.S. News & World Report collected data on more than 21,000 public high schools to create its list of the 2013 Best High Schools.
The report features profiles of the 4,805 highest-scoring schools in the nation. Schools were ranked within each state, as well as nationally. That way, residents can see how their public high school stacked up against rivals within the community and throughout the United States.
Both Naperville North High and Naperville Central high schools in Naperville Unit School District 203 received high rankings. Naperville North was ranked 33 in the state and 874 in the nation. Naperville Central High School received a state rank of 35 and a national rank of 919.
The monthly news magazine published in Washington, D.C., ranked two high schools in Indian Prairie Unit School District 204. Neuqua Valley High School ranked 23 in the state and 563 in the nation. Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora was ranked 46 in the state and 1,127 in the nation.
According to a news release from School District 204, Metea Valley in Aurora was not ranked because 12th-grade data was not available at the time of the study. Schools throughout the nation were awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals based on state proficiency standards, how well they prepare students for college, and other factors.
The four public high schools ranked that serve Naperville students received silver medals.
The methodology to produce the rankings included reviewing test scores, state assessments and college-level coursework, such as Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate programs.
