Washington Street Bridge now closed in downtown Naperville – public should continue to avoid downtown area
UPDATE: The Washington Street Bridge is still closed, will be closed for at least several hours.
Due to rising floodwaters and the full opening of the Fawell Dam, the City of Naperville closed the Washington Street Bridge in downtown Naperville late Thursday afternoon. This is necessary to ensure the safety of all motorists and pedestrians. Please continue to avoid the downtown area and plan alternate routes if you must travel this evening. For your safety, please do not go near flooded roadways, ponds or the DuPage River.
Information on the Fawell Dam may be found at http://ec.dupageco.org/dec/stormwater/watershed/WestBranch/FawellDam.cfm
The Eagle Street Bridge remains closed. Closures of the Main Street and Gartner Road Bridges could occur in the near future. City officials continue to monitor the situation and will take immediate action to close these bridges if necessary.
The Jefferson Avenue Bridge, located west of downtown, is anticipated to remain open. However, water will likely cover Jefferson Avenue as it travels downstream and render the roadway impassable. The public is also advised to avoid that area if at all possible.
Additional communications as to the status of bridge closures and re-openings will be communicated via www.naperville.il.us as they become available.
The interactive map showing all known closed and impassable roadways is continually being updated at www.naperville.il.us as well as the Flood Operations webpage at www.naperville.il.us/floodops.aspx. Up-to-date information is also available on the City’s government access television channel WCNC (Ch. 6 – WOW, Ch. 10 – Comcast, Ch. 99 – AT&T) and through the City’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/NapervilleIL and Twitter account at http://twitter.com/NapervilleIL.
