Greetings to PN – March 2013

-

Most recent greeting posted at top. Many Greetings to PN also are linked to online stories.

We want to thank you for publishing a list of candidates that we can vote for. The election commission sends out that list of EVERYBODY in the county & leaves one looking for the pertinent ones for our area. Keep up the good work. —Jim & Julie Corwith

Editor’s Note: Visit PN’s Election Central & Voters Guide for a list of candidates and their websites. Also, use the search tool on the right side of the black bar across the top of this web page for other “Consolidated Election” stories. No matter what your choices, thanks for being an informed voter.

I visited your web site earlier today and firstly wanted to congratulate you on the appearance, excellent content and accessibility I discovered there. It is not often I come across a web site that offers such a positive user experience and great information too. —Reena Patel

Every time I see PN, I think………..I need to call.  Glad to see you are keeping Naperville POSITIVE!!! —Ruth Anerino

We have an event at North Central College on May 18, and if you can help us promote this event to people who live in Naperville, that would be wonderful.  We are thrilled that the Prairie Path, founded by Naperville resident May Watts is finally connected to her home town. Our "Experience the Illinois Prairie Path" event will include stories, photographs and music of the founders and volunteers who established and built the Path. As a "recently moved to Naperville" person, I am grateful for the positive energy you generate on every page of your publication!  —Mary Jo Malach, Secretary, Illinois Prairie Path

League of Women Voters Letter to local media:

Vote “YES” to Preserve At-Large Representation on the Naperville City Council. The League of Women Voters of Naperville supports at-large elections. In 2010, members of the League of Women Voters of Naperville undertook a study to determine the methods available for electing members of the city council. The results can be found on our website. This study was done in advance of the 2010 election in which the referendum question asking voters whether to divide the city into districts was held.

We considered representation in other large Illinois cities with a council manager form of government: 72% have at-large representation; 8% have a mixed type representation and 20% have district representation.

Demographics including homogenous population, size, growth, density and distribution of the population were primary reasons why the League believed at-large” election was the best choice for Naperville.

Other large cities in Illinois (Chicago, Aurora, Rockford, Joliet, and Springfield) have significantly different demographic profiles with large minority populations. At-Large representation best fits the demographics of the homogeneous population of Naperville.

Many people think that having districts will ensure that all areas of the city will have a representative on the city council. This is not necessarily true. The size of each district will be at least 30,000 people, which is larger than some cities in Illinois. In fact, under the mixed method, five of the nine council members possibly could come from one area of the city.

We encourage all voters to be informed as they vote in the primary election on Tuesday, April 9, 2013.

—Mary Wright,  President, League of Women Voters of Naperville

Greeting to PN (edited) that evoked a smile from ear to ear! I just love so many things about your newspaper. I love Tom Wehrli’s jokes in Gender Chuckles. They’re always clean and funny. I like the young girl’s column about opera. It brings back memories of when we used to take our children to the opera. I wish Naperville’s high schools put on opera. … I use many of your sponsors. My dentist is Doc Joe.  He takes great care of me. … I go to the Naperville Library, Naper Settlement and Second Chance Resale. And, of course, Oswald’s.  I’d been looking a long time for a battery-operated alarm clock and the other day I found a nice one in Oswald’s that was a great value at $19. I also like their home delivery when you need it. Thanks again for being upbeat.  —Hazel Netherton

Just saw the article (St. Baldrick’s) on PN – fantastic!!  —Bob Fieseler, Shavee

LOOKS GREAT! (St. Baldrick’s) Eva Flewelling, Erin’s mom, forwarded Erin’s comments to me. Erin wrote, “Being a part of St. Baldrick’s with my sister Emma made me feel braver and will be a memory of a lifetime. I have seen Mrs. Stuckey and Mrs. Bernstein lose a lot of their hair from cancer and they are still beautiful. I know losing my hair would not be as tough as what kids with cancer really go through. After being shaved I felt so good, like I could do it a million times! Emma and I raised about $3,500 and I even beat my goal, I feel so lucky. I hope to do it again next year!” Thank You!  —Chuck Koch, Shavee
