Eight years ago, the Naperville Art League planned its first public art competition. A call-to-artists was placed and interested parties responded by submitting artwork that reflected the theme, “Interpretations of the Riverwalk.”
Paintings, photographs, sculptures and mosaics of the pavered walkways, covered bridges and the banks of the DuPage River surfaced and were exhibited in the first of what would become an annual event. Each year thereafter, the list of participants grew and the league became more adventurous with their themes. “Commotion,” “Shattered,” and “Backward Forward” stimulated the creative thought process and entries became more personal and more intriguing.
This year, the league asked for something “Completely Different.” Artists of high school age through adult faced the challenge and created work that will be included in the exhibit held at the Naperville Art League’s Fine Art Center and Gallery.
Cultural differences, the classics, opposing values and optical illusions will be among the concepts represented, all executed in styles ranging from realism to whimsy for the 9th Annual Public Art Competition.
The public is invited to enter this “Completely Different” world at the Naperville Fine Art Center and Gallery, located at 508 N. Center St. This exhibit opens on Fri., March 8 and runs through Sun., March 17, 2013. An Artists’ Reception is scheduled 2-4PM on Sun., March 17, with an award ceremony at 3:15PM. Refreshments will be served.
