Three Naperville residents are among 13 North Central College student broadcasters nominated for 26 awards in a national competition—more than any other college or university radio station in the nation.
The student broadcasters representing WONC-FM 89.1, the College’s student-run radio station, earned 26 nominations in the annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) competition. Winners of the Golden Microphone Trophy Awards will be announced March 2 at the 73rd Annual IBS International Radio/Webcast Conference in New York City.
The nominees include Andy Taylor, Karl Jessen and Jason Krug, all of Naperville.
Taylor, a junior broadcast communication major, received three nominations, two with another student, Anna Kopsky. They were nominated in the Best Station Promo category for “Zombie Run.” Taylor was nominated in the Best Underwriting Campaign category for “Cats,” and Taylor and Kopsky also were nominated in that category for “Slasher Film.”
Jessen, a senior majoring in broadcast communication and interactive media studies, received two nominations, both with other students. He was nominated in the Best Community News category for “Emerald Ash Beetle Report” with students Whitney Goodbred and Noah Savage, and in the Best
Specialty Music Show category for “KTK Morning Show” with Kelsey King and Savage.
Krug, a junior majoring in broadcast communication and interactive media studies, was nominated in the Best Sports Talk Program with students Kevin Jackman and Jeremy Rushing for their work on “The Ultimate Sportsrush With Kevin Jackman.”
The IBS and Collegiate Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) are two national competitions available to college and university radio stations. WONC is among the most honored collegiate radio stations in America and has won national and state awards in commercial and collegiate competitions. The station has won 20 Marconi College Radio Awards; no other college or university radio station in the country has won more. With a 30-mile listening radius and potential listening audience of four million people, WONC’s pure rock music format broadcasts a mix of news, sports, traffic, music and public affairs programming 24 hours a day, year-round.
