There’s a lot to do around Naperville this weekend including the Jaycees Bids for Beads Mardi Gras event, jazz at North Central College and a SECA Fund public hearing Saturday morning at City Hall.

11th Annual District 203/204 Shootout for Cancer / 8-10:30PM / This charity exhibition hockey game will take place at Seven Bridges Ice Arena in Woodridge. It features high school players from District 203 (Naperville North and Naperville Central) pitted against cross-town rivals from District 204 (Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley). Transfer Visit Day / 9AM / North Central College will host a Visit Day Saturday, Feb. 9, for transfer students. Visitors can learn about academic choices, transfer admission process, transfer scholarships and financial aid and tour the campus. Registration begins at 9AM in the Wentz Concert Hall lobby at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. The program starts at 10AM and concludes with lunch at 12:45PM. Bring Birds and Butterflies to Your Yard With Easy Native Plants / 9-11:30AM / At this free interactive workshop, Power Point presentations will illustrate easy-to-grow native garden plants and wildflowers which will beautify your yard and support nature. You’ll get a quick lesson in basic design principles; learn how to incorporate trees and shrubs for the benefit of birds, butterflies and other wild creatures with whom we share our earth. Break-out sessions between the talks will offer an opportunity to ask specific questions of the presenters. Coffee, tea, juice and light snacks will be served. Public hearing for SECA Fund applicants prior to final recommendations / 9AM / Special Events and Cultural Amenities (SECA) fund applicants have opportunity to speak before the Advisory Cultural Commission regarding applications during public hearing in City Council Chambers of the Municipal Center. Following public testimony, the commission will determine final unified recommendation for each application. The commission recommendation will be forwarded to the City Council for consideration at its annual SECA fund workshop in March. The City Council will formally approve all 2013-2014 SECA fund allocations at a regular City Council meeting in April.

Kidz Kabaret Celebrates Dr. Seuss Birthday / 12PM & 3PM / Cat In The Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude, Mayzie and a host of Dr. Seuss characters will come alive on the Center Stage Theater stage during the month of February in “Seussical Junior.” In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday these talented actors will entertain audiences young and old every Saturday in February beginning February 2, 2013. Shows will be performed at 12PM and 3PM. The characters will be available after every show for pictures and autographs. Naperville Jaycees Mardi Gras Bids for Beads / 7-11PM / Come for Cajun-style appetizers from Heaven on Seven, jive to the tunes of Love and Money, have a hurricane and bid the night away to benefit the Naperville Jaycees! All proceeds of the event are donated back into local non-profit organizations through the Jaycees. The festivities will be held at Northern Illinois University Naperville Campus. We Grow Dreams Bowl-A-Thon / 1-5PM / We Grow Dreams will sponsor a four-hour Bowl-A-Thon Sunday, February 10 at Brunswick Zone in Woodridge and is looking for Bowlers and Sponsors. With the goal of raising $100,000 for operating expenses, We Grow Dreams Greenhouse & Garden Center will continue to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to lead fulfilling lives and to train and work in a supportive, safe and caring environment while providing products and services to the community.

Music of Six Continents / 4PM / The Grace United Methodist Church Concert Series presents “Music of Six Continents,” an eclectic organ, piano and choral concert to the benefit of the 2014 Grace Church mission to Kenya. Featuring composer and organist Bonnie Johansen-Werner, concert pianist and Joliet Symphony conductor Jim Stopher, and the Grace Junior Singers, the concert premieres two original works by Johansen-Werner, entitled “Three African Folk Songs” and “Poems of African AIDS Orphans,” and one by Stopher, “Serenade.” Other featured selections are from Beethoven, Ross Edwards, and Joao Wilson Faustini.
