Can Napervillians Bear it? Ravens did it!

-

It’s Super Bowl Sunday and devoted football fans in Naperville will celebrate New Orleans-style here and there without Da Bears in the competition—again.

bearsaDSC_4550After a snowy Sunday morning, PN’s pre-game warm up took us outside to play in the snow.  With the thermometer hovering around 21 degrees, the sun came out about noon enabling the snow to pack slightly while a freezing tribute to the Bears was built in the front yard.  PN’s latest snow creature found “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” to give a few cheers to the brotherly marriage between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens in the 47th Super Bowl competition.

Did you remember? The Chicago Bears only have won the Super Bowl one time. As factoids are featured throughout the pre-game television coverage, note here that it was in the 1985-1986 season that the Bears went 15-1 and went to Super Bowl XX.  During the 20th Super Bowl in history, the Bears defeated the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX to claim their own history.

Richard Dent, a former American football defensive end, was named Super Bowl MVP in 1986.  Dent, who left the Chicago Bears in 1993, played primarily for the Bears of the NFL until retiring in 1997. His pro football career also found him with the San Francisco 49ers (where he won his second Super Bowl ring in 1994), Indianapolis Colts and the Philadelphia Eagles. Dent was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

Did you remember ? The Chicago Bears also went to the Super Bowl in 2007.  That year the Bears lost in Miami to the Indianapolis Colts 29-17.

The Superfans always have a good explanation of why the Bears are not in the Super Bowl–Ditka is God and he has his reasons.  Jim Harbaugh was a quarterback for the Bears during the time of the following Superfans video.

So onward with today.

This year’s Super Bowl match up will be broadcast on CBS, kicking off at 5:30PM (CST).

Another note of trivia is that both teams came within a missed field goal to compete in the Super Bowl last year.

Yet, of course, the major story line all week— even for Bears fans—has been all the word plays on the Super Bowl’s renaming such as the “Harbowl” or “Super Bro” since the two Harbaugh brothers will be playing against each other for the title. As head coach John Harbaugh, older by one year, for the Ravens and head coach Jim Harbaugh for the 49ers take their positions along the sidelines, every mother likely will wonder, “What’s a mother to do?”

Celebrate safely.

Game Updates!

Ravens scored first touch down and extra point by 2:29: Score 7-0.

49ers scored a field goal at 3:58: Score 7-3.

Score at end of 1st Quarter: Baltimore Ravens 7, San Francisco 49ers 3.

Score at Half Time: Baltimore Ravens 21, San Francisco 49ers 6.

With 13:22 to go in the Third Quarter, a power outage delayed the game. Half of the Superdome was without lights. Ravens lead 28-7.

Lights went back on at 8:10PM (CST). Game resumes. Ravens seem to lose power, too.

A sports fan just reminded PN that San Francisco is favored by 4 points.

Score at end of Third Quarter: Baltimore Ravens 28, San Francisco 49ers 23.

Final Score: Baltimore Ravens 34, San Francisco 49ers 31.

Again, celebrate safely. Drive carefully.
