A month long art exhibit showcases work by two North Central College art education seniors, Samantha Rapp of Hinsdale and Alyssa Coy of Oswego.

Titled “Lifelines,” the exhibit includes paintings, drawings, mixed media and sculptures that reflect the values and creativity of the artists. The free exhibit is open to the public and on display Jan. 4-31 in the College’s Meiley-Swallow Hall Gallery, 31 S. Ellsworth St.

Introduced to the arts at an early age, Rapp has been exposed to many different mediums during her years of study, which has opened new avenues for exploration. Her work in “Lifelines” focuses primarily on the people, environments and objects she finds meaningful, which, she says “can transcend into a highly emotional quality” in her pieces. “Narrative characteristics come out through my artwork, as I’m greatly influenced by creating work that contains a story I’ve found significant of my life and the lives of others.”

Coy often incorporates graphic design as inspiration for her paintings, her primary choice of media. Additionally, her drawings and occasional exploration in sculpture and ceramics all reflect her values. “My artwork is centralized around expressing my appreciation for things in my life that I hold dear and important: family, friends, faith and life around me,” she says. “My life would not be what it is without these things and they serve as a natural inspiration for my work.”

Art students at North Central College learn traditional and contemporary media; engage in analytical, critical and abstract thinking; and learn to communicate ideas visually.
