I decided to stay in this month and do this next column on tipping etiquette.
I learned early on from my mom the art of a good tip. We generally tip the standard 20 percent if the service and food are good. We tip more if we feel the service and food were extraordinary.
What people sometimes forget is that from that 20 percent tip you gave your waitress/waiter, they have to tip-out the people that assist them.
For example, the bus boy/girl, the bartender, the bar back and any other service members that helped make your meal.
My mom educated me also by informing me that waitresses and waiters do not make as much as others in retail or service industries so the tip is VERY important to them. It is part of their income.
It’s equally important to know that food delivery people do not make as much as others in the industries and depend on the tips for their gas money, upkeep of the vehicle and insurance. So please remember to tip them.
Another service industry that works primarily on tips is the valet at the restaurant. It cannot be fun to be in the cold running back and forth from a parking lot.
Until next time remember your tipping etiquette and enjoy the New Year!
