A message from School District 203

-

As you prepare to send your children to school this week, we know that it is with some concern and trepidation. All of our hearts are heavy with sorrow over the senseless death of the children, teachers, social worker and principal of Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut and the grief the families and community will be going through for some time. We must look to the needs of our children to assure them of their safety in school and to help them focus on their learning.District-203

We know, as parents, you are trying to shelter your young children from this event as much as possible, but inevitably they will hear pieces of information that will confuse and worry them. Older children will have questions, but may not voice their fears as readily.

On Monday, each school will have social workers available to your child should you indicate a need for your student to talk with one of them. The teachers will also monitor your child throughout the day watching for any indicators of stress or fear and will take direction from their students as to how this issue is addressed in classrooms. Following suggestions from mental health experts, teachers will be advised to respond to questions truthfully, but with the appropriate amount of detail so that questions and concerns are addressed without putting undo focus on the event. Any concerns will be communicated to you, the parent.

As always, our schools’ security measures will be in place. Exterior doors are secured, visitors must sign-in, and badges are worn so students can identify adults in the building. Regularly scheduled safety drills train, prepare and remind students and staff how to conduct themselves should we ever have a need to secure a building.

Know that, as a District, we are all working together to protect our students and to keep our schools a safe place for all children. As a mark of respect and at the request of the President of the United States, flags will be lowered to half-mast until sunset on Tuesday, December 18.

Our goal this week is to maintain a familiar school environment for our students as we prepare for winter break, and return in the new year with a renewed spirit and focus.
