Holiday shopping took a jump start this year as Black Friday slipped in at a time that gave consumers an extra week to make their purchases.
Eager bargain hunters grabbed the chance to zero in on serious price reductions and use their buying power to satisfy all the recipients on their gift list. Could this mean that a window has opened and will allow for a much needed festive escape? Classic films, choruses, sing-a-longs and bell choirs await as the historic Tivoli Theater, 5021 Highland, Downers Grove, presents a full month of activities celebrating the season:
“An Old-Fashioned Christmas” concert will be performed live at 2PM and 8PM Sat., Dec. 8, and again at 1:30PM Sun., Dec. 9. The West Towns Chorus presents its annual Christmas program featuring Chicagoland’s premier Men’s Barbershop Style Chorus along with a bell choir, strings, brass and much, much more.
As part of its annual Holiday Classic Film Festival, the Tivoli Theatre presents a nightly presentation of holiday films. Audience members are invited to come early and sing-along with the Wurlitzer Theatre pipe organ. Featured films are:
“Holiday” (1938), starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, will run at 7PM and 9:30PM Sun., Dec. 9.
“Susan Slept Here” (1954), starring Anne Francis, Debbie Reynolds and Dick Powell is scheduled at 7PM and 9:30PM, Mon., Dec. 10.
“Scrooged” (1988), starring Bill Murray, Karen Allen and John Forsythe, will be shown at 7PM and 9:30PM Tues., Dec. 11.
“White Christmas” (1954), starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen, 1:30PM, 4PM, 7PM & 9:30PM Wed., Dec. 12.
“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (1989), starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D’ Angelo and Randy Quaid, 7PM and 9:30PM Thurs., Dec. 13.
