Family Shelter Service recently held its first ever “Home Sweet Home” gingerbread decorating experience at The Abbington, Glen Ellyn.
More than 200 parents, grandparents and children turned out for the event, featuring a breakfast buffet, costumed storybook characters from PriMerry Players and West Town Chorus, holiday sounds of the Westmont High School Madrigal Choir, face painting and a balloon artist.
The highlight for many was the opportunity to decorate a gingerbread house donated by Wilton Industries to take home to grace the holiday table.
Guided by volunteers from DuPage Medical Group, many of the children frosted and affixed candy decorations to their masterpieces, while others spent their time tasting the colorful candy decorations in a joyful holiday celebration to benefit women and children struggling with abusive situations. Many Family Shelter clients and their children were able to participate, as well, thanks to the generosity of sponsors such as Magnetrol, Smith Partners, Burr Ridge Bank and other supporters who underwrote the cost of their attendance.
The event was organized by the Southeast Community Resource Council of Family Shelter Service.

“The outpouring of support was remarkable,” said Family Shelter Service Executive Director Karen Kuchar in a news release. “This was only our first year and we raised $9,000 to support our programs. And from the looks on the kids’ faces who participated, I think a wonderful time was enjoyed by all.”
