The role of parents and caregivers in a child’s life is profoundly important.
The adult-child relationship impacts many areas in a child’s life—helping a child to grow, succeed, and live a successful life. It has been shown to positively impact not only a child’s health and development, but also educational progress, as well as life choices. The bond that is created between a child and caring adult can have positive effects well into the teen years and beyond.
The mission of DuPage Children’s Museum speaks to supporting the adult-child partnership and to the integration of math, art and science activities to promote play and learning. Math, art and science can be part of our everyday lives whether at the Museum or at home. Use these tips to build your relationship with young ones…
1. Draw, paint and color together.
2. Use measuring cups and a tub of water as a portable water table.
3. Make a bubble solution in a wading pool and then use a hula hoop to make a giant bubble.
4. Assemble a basket full of fabrics and materials to explore texture.
5. Use a flashlight to create shadow puppets on the wall.
6. Use sunglasses, mirrors and windows to explore reflection.
7. Investigate the properties of air and the effects of wind with a ceiling or portable fan.
8. Count together as you climb stairs.
9. Use masking tape and popsicle sticks to build a sculpture.
10. Sort a variety of small objects using a muffin tin or cups.
