The Simple Gifts Foundation, a nonprofit organization, helps children with special needs and their family. The foundation began in 2003, when a local resident recognized that often times, a family with a special needs child feels the load is too much, the need too great and are at times overwhelmed trying to make ends meet.
“If you are a parent of a child with special needs, like I am, the load and the needs can be even more out of reach,” says Donna Swanson, Executive Director of Simple Gifts. “We at the Simple Gifts Foundation believe that a helping hand, at the right moment, can guide individuals in the right direction, because to do for another is the greatest gift of all.”
The Simple Gifts Foundation raises funds and accepts donations – gifts – for the sole purpose of passing them along to those in need. They can assist people or families, in the Naperville area and surrounding communities, with personal, educational, or emergency needs.
“It’s simple,” said Swanson. “At some point in our lives, we all struggle. We believe that offering a helping hand to those in need can help them get to a better place in their lives.”
This is a great opportunity for families, churches, businesses, book clubs or neighborhood groups, to help others. There is no set amount that you must spend, you decide what is best for you and your family or organization and have fun doing it. A gift card from any local business or grocery store is always appreciated. The Foundation is currently finalizing plans for their “Santa’s Sleigh” holiday program and there are children available for “adoption” to help meet the basic needs and wishes on their list.
The Simple Gifts Foundation accepts donations year-round, not only during the holiday season. The Simple Gifts Foundation has assisted special needs families obtain devices and equipment such as an adaptive bicycle for a child with disabilities; school supplies; medications; even funeral expenses.
