Saxophonist and acclaimed North Central College jazz faculty member Mitch Paliga performs Jan. 4 in the College’s intimate Madden Theatre.

“An Evening with Jazz Saxophonist Mitch Paliga” begins at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, in the College’s Madden

Bio

Paliga is an active performer, educator and composer in the Chicago area. A native of Libby, Mont., Paliga became fascinated with saxophone during high school and switched to soprano saxophone in college where he “found that this was his voice.”

“Moving to Chicago in 1990 has offered me many opportunities and experiences,” Paliga says. He has performed with Randy Brecker, Vinnie Colaiuta, Danny Gottlieb, Kimotion, The Temptations, Bob Newhart, Marie Osmond, Rudy Linka, Akio Sasajima, Damon Short, Jo Ann Daugherty, Deanna Witkowski, Hard Art Group, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra and currently tours with actor/musician Gary Sinise’s Lt. Dan Band.

Paliga has a master’s degree in jazz pedagogy from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in music from Eastern New Mexico University. He has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Chicago Community Arts Assistance Program Grant. Ken Dryden of Billboard says, “relatively few jazz musicians take up soprano sax compared to the rest of the reed family, but Mitch Paliga is one who mastered his instrument.” Paliga is also a founding member of the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective (CJCC) and a senior lecturer at Lake Forest College.
