As we enter the holiday season, we often reflect upon the past year, our lives, and our families.
And if you’re fortunate enough to have all of your family near you, some of those family members might live at Independence Village, located at 1030 Aurora Ave.
This retirement community, built in 1985 for residents at least 55 years young, is a single building with interior hallways and multiple common areas throughout. Common areas refer to, well, commonly used spaces in a development. They might include the parking lot, a fitness center, club house, and, yes, interior hallways.
Some of those common areas at Independence Village include the lobby with a 24-hour doorman, exercise room, computer lab, salon and barbershop, community room with kitchen, and dining hall with a private and casual dining area as well as a formal dining room.
Executive Chef Ebony Littleton has been serving up three meals a day for the past eight years in the main dining room. The multiple menu options provide variety for up to 142 residents who live in the 81 one-bedroom apartments and 61 studio apartments.
Other common areas at Independence Village are the two outdoor courtyards. One courtyard is set up for gardening where residents can plant vegetables and flowers, while the other courtyard is reserved for patio and barbecuing activities. The second one also is the year-round home to Socks, the cat.
Heather Lyons, the community marketing director, is new to Naperville, but she’s already falling in love with our city.
“I like how convenient everything is in town.” Lyons said. “I also love the relationships I already have with the staff, residence and the community.”
