Ailey II will bring a fresh dimension to dance Oct. 21 at North Central College

-

Universally renowned dance troupe Ailey II will perform Oct. 21 at North Central College.

Ailey II will take the stage at 6PM Sunday, Oct. 21, in the College’s Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton Ave.

Tickets are $25, $15 and $10; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/showtix.

Ailey II merges the spirit and energy with the passion and creative vision of today’s most outstanding emerging choreographers. A new spirit is taking hold at the acclaimed dance company this season as Troy Powell steps into his new role as artistic director.

A veteran former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dancer and choreographer, Powell served as Ailey II’s associate artistic director since 2003. After Sylva Waters’ retirement in June 2012, Powell was appointed Artistic Director and he promises to bring a fresh dimension to this beloved company of emerging dancers and choreographers.

“I aim to keep Alvin Ailey’s legacy alive while keeping things young and fresh with this new generation of artists,” he says.

Created by Alvin Ailey to help talented students make the transition from the studio to the stage, Ailey II now has almost 40 years of history. Under Waters’ direction, Ailey II flourished into one of the most popular dance companies in the country, combining a rigorous touring schedule with extensive community outreach programs, including training and community programs for all people.

The company’s repertoire has included works by dance masters Alvin Ailey, Judith Jamison, Talley Beatty, Ulysses Dove and George Fashion. Ailey II has received numerous honors, awards and proclamations in recognition of its residencies at major colleges and universities across the United States.

The Los Angeles Times says “the dancers proved indefatigable, virtuosic and relentlessly sexy,” while the New York Times says audiences should “expect energy and talent.”

Navistar is underwriting sponsor of North Central College’s 2012-2013 Fine and Performing Arts Season. The season is partially supported by USG Corporation, JPMorgan Chase and a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
