Native American Pow Wow returns to Naper Settlement Sept. 22-23

Midwest SOARRING Foundation will host its 18th Annual Harvest Pow Wow at  Naper Settlement  on Sept. 22 and 23. The Pow Wow welcomes everyone to gather, offering an opportunity to experience the Native American culture through this colorful and interactive  family-friendly  event.

Hear the sound of Native American drumming and see dancers in regalia (native clothing).  Shop for items such as turquoise jewelry, beads, baskets, drums, blankets, hides and moccasins as well as native food can be found throughout the wide array of vendors displaying their unique goods.

Saturday’s hours are from 11AM to 10PM and Sunday from 11 AM to 5PM.

The Grand Entry of all the dancers will be held at 1PM and 7PM on Saturday and 1PM on Sunday with special Exhibition Dances held throughout the weekend.

This year, TWILIGHT actor Chaske Spence, pictured far right,  who plays lead werewolf Sam Uley in “The New Moon” and “Breaking Dawn,” will appear  from 1PM-4PM and 6PM-8PM on Saturday and  from 1PM-4PM oon Sunday; normal event admission fees would apply.

A special VIP reception with Chaske will be held from Noon until 1PM both days for $25 which includes refreshments and admission to the pow wow. Seats are very limited.

This year’s pow wow also will include a special Veteran Honoring at the 1PM Grand Entries; S.O.A.R, Save Our American Raptors with Deshka, the American Bald Eagle and other birds of prey from Noon until 5PM.  Also, Hana Hou Hula, a Native Hawaiian dance performance featuring an opening ceremony, hula dancers and fire dancers is scheduled at 5PM on  Saturday.

In addition, an 18 foot tipi will be on display. Native storytelling and Native flute player, Al Jewer, will add to the festivities.

The Children’s Area, open from 11AM-4PM both days, hosts crafts; games; flintknapping (making arrowheads) and educational information for all ages.

Admission to the Pow Wow including access to the Naper Settlement buildings and museum (during regular museum hours) is $8 for adults and $5 for Seniors (62+) and children 5-12. Children under 5 are FREE. Discounts are available to groups of 10 or more and two-day admission tickets. The admission fee will go to support Midwest SOARRING Foundation and its programs.

This is an alcohol and drug free event and is open to everyone. Sorry, no pets allowed on Naper  Settlement grounds. This event is partially supported by a grant from the city of Naperville.
