From Mon., July 9 to Mon., July 23, the Naperville Public Library is conducting a Food for Fines Drive in support of Loaves & Fishes. The Library will waive $1 of fines for every item of non-perishable food brought to any Library building, up to a maximum of $20 per card. Free will donations are also appreciated.
“We are very excited to again partner with Loaves & Fishes. Having a summer drive is perfect because our Summer Reading Program is themed ‘Reading is So Delicious!’ As soon as we heard about the theme, we immediately thought of them,” explains Chris Murray, drive coordinator and 95th Street Library Circulation Services Supervisor.
As she coordinated the project with Loaves and Fishes, Chris learned about the organization’s summer emphasis – nutrition for school kids. “Since school isn’t in session now, many Naperville children who receive school breakfast and lunch at school are missing out,“ Chris explains. “Last summer, Loaves & Fishes served 3,043 students between the ages of 5 and 18. This summer they expect more than 5,300 will need help.” She emphasized, “Because the need is so great, we’re asking people to help these kids. Some of the items Loaves & Fishes wants include canned chicken, low sugar granola bars, applesauce, shelf stable milk and peanut butter.” For a more complete list, click here.
Chris notes that while the drive is called Food for Fines, the Library is also accepting household cleaning products, personal hygiene items, diapers and paper goods.
She reminds people that only overdue charges will be waived. Fees, including InterLibrary Loan, copies, lost and damaged items, movie checkout, and collection agency will not be waived. Donations should be brought to any of our three buildings: Nichols Library, 200 W. Jefferson Ave.; Naper Boulevard Library, 2035 S. Naper Blvd.; and 95th Street Library, 3015 Cedar Glade Dr.
