Enjoy sangria and tapas to benefit Upendo Village, Kenya

-

Beginning at 5:30PM Tues., June 12, the Rotary Club of Naperville and Sisters Florence and Francesca from Upendo Village will join together to help raise funds for the women’s microenterprise at Upendo Village in Kenya until 7:30PM at Meson Sabika. Admission is $25 for tapas and sangria.

The event will feature a special sale of handmade jewelry, scarves and tote bags from the women of Upendo Village. The funds raised will go back in part to the women that handmade the pieces as well as go toward educational funds and back into the microenterprise to train and launch other microenterprises.

The Rotary Club of Naperville has supported several projects over the past few years at Upendo Village including HIV screening kits, family size solar ovens, goats for microenterprise, and  water well, filtration, and underground storage systems.  Additionally, this will be Rotary’s fourth annual fundraiser for the women’s microenterprise.

According to event organizers, Upendo Village has had several environmental events that have challenged them with the drought last year and the floods this year.   The water well, filtration, and underground storage systems provided by the Rotary Club of Naperville served to avoid starvation last year during the drought as they were able to maintain their crops to feed the Upendo Village community.

On top of the natural disasters, their economy is in very poor condition with inflation at 18.9 percent in 2011 and this year it is currently at 13 percent. Added to this financial burden is that one of their food staples, maize, went up 54 percent and fuel went up by nearly the same rates of inflation.   It is very difficult for people to survive right now given that Upendo Village serves those in abject poverty, which translates to surviving on less than a $1 per day.

The Rotary Club of Naperville recognizes the generosity of Rotarian Hossein Jamali, owner of Meson Sabika. Note that $20 of the admission charge goes directly to Upendo Village.

To register on-line, visit http://upendo.eventbrite.com or just pay at the door at Meson Sabika, located at 1025 Aurora Ave.
