Memorial Day Weekend activities in Naperville

Saturday

CENTENNIAL BEACH OPENED FOR THE SEASON / 11AM-8PM, Sat., May 26 / Raft time for grown-ups is Sunday mornings at Centennial Beach! Open from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day / Located adjacent to the Riverwalk along Jackson Ave. in downtown Naperville. Season ends Sept. 4.  FREE ADMISSION ON MEMORIAL DAY!

Watch www.centennialbeach.org for details.

Editor’s Note: When PN visited The Beach late on Saturday afternoon to pick up some statistics about the first day of operation, the young man working at the entrance seemed to think attendance had been low, despite the high temperatures. When we checked about 4PM,  we learned the the thermometer had hit  87°F  under hazy skies.  Though he  was unable to provide us with a headcount, he reminded us that admission will be free of charge on Memorial Day.

We chuckled when at 3:50PM, no one was swimming in the water, but many people of all ages were sunbathing, playing games and hitting in the new sand volleyball court. We wondered if the water were still too cold.  Then we heard an announcement, “Thank you for your cooperation. You may now resume swimming.” And we noted a rush of swimmers heading toward the water.

Tomorrow is another day at the beach.

An ombudsman is Scandinavian in origin dating back to Viking times; and refers to a community representative; usually acting independently on behalf of an organization, body of elected officials, or civic group. Thanks Scandinavia for inventing ombudsman.
