Nicki Scott, a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Naperville / Sunrise, recently spent two weeks in India to volunteer and attend the Polio Summit 2012. She also currently serves as the Assistant Governor of Rotary District 6450. Organized by Rotary International and the Indian Ministry of Health, the summit strives to create ways to live in a polio-free world.
America was once threatened by the polio virus, but it has been eradicated through vaccination, education, volunteers, and modern medical science. Jonas Salk discovered the vaccine in 1955. Polio became completely eradicated in the western hemisphere by the early 1990’s.
