NCC President to Retire at End of 150th Year

-

North Central College President Harold (Hal) Wilde will retire at the end of the 2012 calendar year after nearly 22 years at the helm of the 3,000-student private comprehensive liberal arts college.

Wilde, only the ninth president in the history of the 150-year-old institution, announced his plans to the College’s Board of Trustees on Fri., Feb. 17.

“By any standard, Hal Wilde has had a remarkable tenure as North Central’s president,” said Board Chair and alumnus Steve Hoeft, noting that during that time the institution has seen a nearly 10-fold increase in its endowment, a doubling of its full-time student population, completion of 15 major building projects, continuously balanced budgets, and a successful $50 million capital campaign. “His legacy will be felt on this campus—and throughout the community of Naperville—for generations to come.”

In his remarks to the Board, Wilde called it “a rare privilege” to serve as the College’s president, to live in the middle of campus and get to know thousands of members of the North Central family. “There were many days—not every day, but many—when I would have paid for that privilege.”

“Hal first spoke to the Board about retirement as he approached his 65th birthday two years ago, and he committed to staying at the College through its Sesquicentennial,” Hoeft explained. “He has worked with the Board of Trustees to insure that the College sustains its momentum through its transition to new leadership.”

Founded in 1861 and celebrating its Sesquicentennial in 2011-2012, North Central College is an independent, comprehensive college of the liberal arts and sciences that offers more than 55 undergraduate majors and graduate programming in six areas. With more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students, North Central College is committed to academic excellence, a climate that emphasizes leadership, ethics, values and service, a curriculum that balances job-related knowledge with a liberal arts foundation and a caring environment with small classes.
