AAUW Angeline Gale Memorial Scholarship
"The scholarship is named after Angeline Gale, an educator and founder of our branch. Each year since 1971, the Naperville Branch of AAUW has offered the ANGELINE GALE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP to a mature woman working toward completion of her bachelor's degree. Tradition and policy dictate that the recipient of the year's $3,000 scholarship reside in the areas served by our branch, Naperville, Aurora, Bolingbrook, Joliet, Lisle, Plainfield, Warrenville, or Woodridge, and that she be a woman older than the usual college age who will graduate within one and one half years. Other factors considered include financial need, grade point average, and career plans. The scholarship can be awarded to someone attending part-time and/or already receiving financial aid as well as full-time non-funded students. The selection process will be completed by mid-April and the funds made available by the beginning of the summer school semester or term. If you are interested in more information about this scholarship, email us for an application at napermember@yahoo.com. Completed applications are due each year no later than March 15".

Essentials At Naperville Contest Level to vie for National Scholarship of $18,000
1. Draft in writing a "Prepared Oration" on some phase(s) of the U.S. Constitution which will give emphasis to the attendant duties and obligations of a citizen that can be given in no less than 8 minutes and no more than 10 minutes. It must have a title. It does not have to be recited verbatim, but contestants must adhere to the ideas prepared. It is suggested that contestants memorize an outline, along with a beginning and an ending, and practice with a teacher or parent who will give constructive comments.
Because of the time requirements, and because one may speak at a different rate in different locations, it is good to have items that can be added, or left out, just before starting the final ending, depending on time warning signs which will appear at the 8, 9 and 10 minute marks. Use a timer when practicing. Have pleasant facial expression. Do not be a statue. Be your natural self, but use expression and emphasis like good speakers do.
2. Be prepared to speak no less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes on the "Assigned Topic" which will be selected at contest time. It will be one of the four parts of the U.S. Constitution. You will receive notice of the four parts months in advance of the contest date. Time warning signs will appear at the 3, 4, and 5 minute marks.
3. No notes, no microphone, and no podium will be used while speaking.
4. Only one contestant will be accepted from each High School invitation in the Naperville area. Ten days or more before contest date, the 1st Sunday in December, the American Legion Contest Chairman for Naperville, Don Hennessy, 630-355-4679, will need to confirm with a School Representative (1) the name and (2) phone number of the contestant that will appear and compete at the contest from that High School. Earlier confirmations from the High School are appreciated.
5. Appear in business attire with a parent or teacher. Bring a written copy of your "Prepared Oration" which has a title. "Sign In" at the American Legion Hall, 8 W. Chicago, 2nd Floor, Naperville, on 1st Sunday in December at 1:30 PM..
6. The order of speaking will be determined by lot at contest time. Contestants will not hear speeches of other contestants, but parents, teachers and guests may attend and hear the speeches of all contestants. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Winners will be announced the same afternoon after all contestants have been heard - the same afternoon. Prizes of $300, 200 and $100 will be awarded.
7. When facts or figures are used, have good back-up sources and references for same in your file. It would be embarrassing to later learn a speech contained erroneous facts or figures.
8. This National Contest has occurred annually since 1938. The same format repeats at 5 state contest levels with the 1st place contestant advancing to the next level. The State Champion then competes against the other 49 States in the National Contest which has 3 contest levels. State college awards of $15,000 are spread among State contestants. National college awards over $100,000 are spread among National contestants with $18,000, $16,000 and $14,000 going to the three finalists.
For more information and answers to questions, please contact Don Hennessy at (630) 355-4679 or 1071 Devonshire Ave., Naperville, IL 60540.
The Naperville Evening Kiwanis grants two Education Scholarship Awards. The award is granted to a graduating senior in the Waubonsie Valley High School Key Club who is enrolled at an accredited college or university for the following year. The purpose of this award is to recognize students for their display of leadership, community service and successful educational efforts in furtherance of their education. While class rank or GPA is not the primary requirement of the award, Kiwanis International believes that working to achieve a quality education is not just the job of the school, but is the primary occupation of every student.
The Kiwanis Club of Naperville - Evening seeks to recognize the balance of these efforts as much as results.
The Naperville Evening Kiwanis raises money for these awards, as well as annual awards to many Naperville area non-profit organizations through two major fund raisers every year. First is the March Pancake Festival where members flip thousands of flapjacks, and second is by selling pre-packaged peanuts during Peanut Days in September at local supermarkets & train stations.

Pierotti Memorial Scholarship
The DuPage Community Foundation is accepting applications for the annual Paul D. Pierotti Memorial Scholarship Fund Award. The application form can be downloaded from the education section of The Conservation Foundation’s web site at www.theconservationfoundation.org. Completed applications should be postmarked by March 1.
The Paul D. Pierotti Memorial Scholarship Fund was established at The DuPage Community Foundation in June 2006 by Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President D. “Dewey” Pierotti Jr. and his wife, Leslie, in memory of their late son, Paul. It was created to generate income for annual scholarships for graduates of DuPage County high schools who plan to work toward careers in natural resource management or other environmentally-related fields of study.
"The scholarship fund gives us the opportunity to provide assistance to individuals with the same passions as our Paul, something we believe would make him very proud,” said Lynn Boerman, Paul Pierotti’s sister, in a statement on behalf of the family. “It helps keep Paul's memory alive with us, everyday."
Paul Pierotti was killed in March of 1998 as a result of a two-car crash that occurred in West Chicago. A graduate of York High School in Elmhurst and West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia, Pierotti had been an assistant manager of the Elmhurst-Chicago Stone Co. plant in Elgin. He was 30 years old and engaged to be married.
Applicants wishing to be considered for the scholarship must possess a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A., provide details of their academic achievement, outline their participation in extracurricular activities, and write a 350 word essay on an environmental topic determined annually by the selection committee.
Scholarship applications for the Paul D. Pierotti Memorial Scholarship Fund are administered by The DuPage Community Foundation and reviewed by a special selection committee consisting of a Pierotti family member, one Forest Preserve District of DuPage County staff member, and three staff members from The Conservation Foundation. The committee then recommends its selections to The DuPage Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees for final approval.
This past April the Fund awarded its first scholarship to Justin Kania of Naperville. Kania is a 2006 graduate of Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora. He presently attends the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as a Forestry Management major where he is involved with several extracurricular groups including the Parks and Recreation Association, The Wildlife Society, Herpetology Club and the Society of American Foresters.
