Here's what our readers are saying about
Positively Naperville...
(Edited for space, of course!)

You really should have seen was all the tables of members reading PN’s (at Rotary Club of Naperville/Sunrise meeting). Would have been a fun photo for your paper. ... Thanks again for all the good coverage.
---Mary Ann Junkroski, Rotary Club of Naperville /Sunrise, www.napervillesunrise.com
I understand that you did a story about the Rotary Club of Naperville Sunrise, which I missed. Is that story still available? What issue was it in? Any information would be helpful.
---Bruce Dixon, Sunrise Rotary
Editor's Note: The picture profile of the Rotary Club of Naperville/Sunrise was featured in the August 2009 issue. The pages will be posted online until Sept. 1, 2009 at www.pnmonthly.com.
Thank you and Positively Naperville for your help with the WINGS article in the August issue. I know I can count on you to help NCO with this program!
Nancy Hoelscher, WINGS Program Facilitator, www.ncoyouth.org
Thank you for the great article (Aug. 2009) on our newest documentary “A Hallmark of Heritage.” It was so nice to see it so beautifully presented in “Positively Naperville.” Our partnership with the Naperville Heritage Society has resulted in a multitude of opportunities to preserve this community’s rich history. We appreciate people like you who share the enthusiasm.
---Nancy Wiersum, Community Development Director, NCTV17
I have the answer to the question in PN. Before Rosebud, Morgan's Crossing filled the space. They were there about 9 years. Then there was Peck's Hickory Smokehouse. It was owned by Richard Peck who eventually bought the building and leased the space to Rosebud.
---Brand Bobosky
Thanks for being a great supporter of the DuPage Symphony!
---Gary Olson, Publicity, DSO Board of Directors, www.dupagesymphony.org/
I am a relatively new business in Naperville and wanted to share our information with you….so, when you get a “free moment” I have pasted our press release below!! …I am a big fan of Positively Naperville since my husband and I moved here in December, so thank you very much for all of the great information you provide!
---Heather Hanson, owner, About Face Cosmetics, www.theshespace.com
Thank you. Thank you for giving Loaves & Fishes such good coverage.
---Sandy Forty, President, Loaves & Fishes Board of Directors
Thanks a bunch for the pictures!!
---Jim Mick
Editor's Note: On Aug. 3, PN was on hand to photograph the Cakebread Winemaker Dinner at SugarToad in the Hotel Arista. The special event featured pairings of wine and food by Dennis Cakebread and Chef Jimmy Sneed. Several patrons asked for copies of their photos to preserve the memory. PN was happy to oblige.
The father of Barbara Hayden had Hayden's Bakery at 107 Jefferson. Barbara was a classmate of mine in the graduating class of 1949. Gary Hoormann was inquiring about this in the August, 2009 issue of Positively Naperville.
---Jim Haas
I enjoyed the newest edition of PN (August 2009), as always, and especially got a kick out of Ed Channell's article, and the parties at his home as his kids were growing up. Ed lived around the corner from me, and we had our share of teen-age parties, too. Darn! I never thought to monitor the window wells!
Here's a real nostalgia challenge for PN readers. I have a German translation of the New Testament, printed in New York in 1881. The inscription reads, in part, "German Evangelical Sunday School of Naperville, Il., Dec 25, 1881" Does anyone know anything about the Sunday School?
Keep up the great work.
---Shirley Pace
Below was posted publicly on my Facebook, thought you would like to see it...
"Kathy Wishnew: Absolutely loved your article in "Positively Naperville"...how timely."
---Barb Dwyer
I noticed several articles about NCO in this month’s edition (August 2009), including a plug for Team NCO. Thanks. We appreciate the support. (Guess I really do have to go through with this marathon thing now, though).
---Tony Chirico, President, NCO Youth & Family Services Board of Directors
I wanted to let you know that I enjoyed the recent articles on operas written by Emily Riederer…a nice addition to your paper.
---James R. Kreamer
Editor's Note: In July 2009, Emily Riederer began a special series of columns titled "A teen's voice for opera."
Naperville Nostalgia question in August Greetings from Readers wanting to know names of two restaurants prior to Rosebud: Before Rosebud...Peck's Smokehouse.
---Dan Casey
Positively Naperville/DuPage County Fair Partnership / I just wanted you to know that I did use the County Fair tickets that you raffled off at the Kiwanis meeting recently. I used them when the barbershoppers sang at the fair on Wednesday night. ... And we enjoyed the fair. Thanks again.
---Tom Jones, Naperville Evening Kiwanis, Chorus of DuPage
A friend was telling me how her grandfather use to have a bakery at 107 Jefferson where the Irish Store is now located. This would have been in the 1930's. I was wondering if anyone has a memory of the bakery. Perhaps there is a photo of Jefferson Street from that period showing the bakery. ... Any help you can give is appreciated.
---Gary Hoormann
The picture on page 9 (July 2009 Naperville Nostalgia) asks, Why were these men ready to parade in 1931? It was Naperville's Centennial Parade. My grandpa Frank Keller was in a top hat with many of his relatives including Win Knocke, Frank Seiler and members of the Bapst family. I believe he was also in a play about the history of Naperville which took place at North Central College. As for the parade, my mom & dad marched in the parade twice! They were just out of their sophomore year in high school and marched with the city band, which led the parade, then they ran back, changed uniforms and marched in the Naperville High School Band. They talked about it often.
---Ron Keller
Our next INS ( Involved Naperville Seniors ) meeting will be held on Wednesday, 7/22 at 6:00 PM in the Municipal Center, ( I still like to call it City Hall.) ... (The public is invited) where you could learn what we are all about.
---Cy Frank, Involved Naperville Seniors
The Naperville Area Humane Society Celebrity Bartender Event at Zaidi’s, held on July 8, 2009 was a purrfect success, and on behalf of our four-legged friends and the people whose lives they touch, we’d like to thank Zaidi Syed, owner of Zaidi’s, his wonderful staff and all of people that contributed to it.
Zaidi’s is a beautiful venue and his food and beverage offerings are absolutely wonderful. Because of this, our hard-working celebrity bartenders raised over $1,600, (in one evening!!) to support the important programs and services offered by the Naperville Area Humane Society.
Once again, thank you Zaidi and your entire staff for working so hard to help the dogs, cats and children that are served everyday by the Naperville Area Humane Society. We are grateful.
---Linda L. Linford, Executive Director, Naperville Area Humane Society
Looks great (Updated Ribfest Nostalgia Page)! Please feel free to use any of the pictures in PN.
---Joe Lichter
If you are able to give us a mention online (for Mega Garage Sale), it would be greatly appreciated.
We will be accepting donations July 11 - July 13. and the sale will be on July 17 - 18. ... Since we are a not-for-profit group from St. Margaret Mary Parish, we rely on getting the word out through free advertisements in community papers, such as yours. Thank you for any way you can help spread the word for our event.
---Barbara Fair, Sharing Parish Garage Sale, Coordinator, www.smmp.com
Editor's Note: Please see the online July calendar dates for more information.
Thank you very much for posting the essay I sent you in "Drive Safe and drive sober" corner. I appreciate your support and cooperation in this important matter. ... Also, thanks for letting us know about the Ribfest event. I am excited because tomorrow I will be volunteering there!!!
---Al Sharoa
TO COLUMNIST ED CHANNELL OF ED'S MANY HATS / Loved your column. How true it is that we spend too much money and waste good golf time doing what we could hire for a cheaper price and a lot less aggravation. Not only does it apply to yard work but also to most honey-do projects.
---Rick Elder
Nice job on July issue of Positively Naperville. Thanks!
---WB Bobosky
I need to know what the population was in the year 1951 for Naperville. Can you help me with this? Thanks.
---Linda Senft
Editor's Note: In 1950, Naperville's population was 7,000. By 1960, it had grown to approximately 13,000.
Great job with PN this month!
---Barb Dwyer
Thanks so much for the way you handled all the Loaves & Fishes news in the July PN! I love that you mentioned the grant in the Rotary Golf Outing piece, and thanks for getting the Board onto the Overflow Page. You truly are a communications partner in the best sense of the phrase, and I so enjoy working with you. ... All the best for a safe and happy 4th!
I picked up July's copy of PN and was thrilled to see Emily's opera column. ... She is fully ramped up now with on-stage and behind-the-scenes work in Dupage Opera Theatre's summer production of the comic opera "The Elixir of Love." ... I was struck by this thought. Emily can almost lay claim to the title of the "longest-running opera columnist in the western suburbs." ( ! )
Anyway, thanks again for publishing the column. It brought a smile to my face and hopefully will pique the curiosity of your readers.
---Dick Riederer
I was hoping Positively Naperville could promote our annual 5k family fun run and 1.8 mile walk scheduled for August 22, 2009 at Scott Elementary School in Naperville. ... If you could be included in your overflow news, calendar of events - or wherever you see fit - that would be great.
---Linda Hansen, Scott School Marketing Chair
People have been bringing me the center spread this morning (featuring the Naper Days Bed Races featuring the victory of Nuns on the Run). ... Our residents enjoy reading the paper so much.
---Madelene Bernar, St. Patrick's Residence
We actually get Positively Naperville delivered to our house, and the July issue was just delivered this morning! Page 3 looks great. Thanks!
~Brianna Bartemeyer, Operation Support Our Troops - IL, PR Chairperson
Editor's Note: Rockin' for the Troops kicks off at noon on Sat., July 18, at Cantigny. INFO: www.osotil.org.
... I work for the show, "Bang For Your Buck² on Home and Garden Television (HGTV). We are now in production of our 2nd season and are looking to bring the show to the Chicago, IL area. I'm hoping for your help in locating homeowners who may be interested in having their recently remodeled master suite featured on our show!
I am contacting you to see if it would be possible to post a small blurb on your Naperville Blog about the homeowners we are looking to feature. We are looking to select our homes within the next couple weeks, so time is of the essence.
Thank you very much for your time.
---Brooke Schledewitz
Editor's Note: The press release was posted online on June 27, 2009.
Your Positively Naperville photo in your June Naperville Nostalgia section shows three people with a red maquette in front, and a brown unpainted welded metal platesection of the Riverwalk's "Landforms" behind the people. They are part of the commissioning group from the Naperville Art League with Betty Zahn (painter) on the right, Jim Throne (Pres. and pen and ink artist), and Sheila Bruns (sculptor) on the left. The date was June 15, 1984. For a progress report on the Art League's commissioned sculpture, we were visiting the sculptor Jack Arnold at the Cadillac Tank & Metal Fabricators in Addison where the sculpture was being fabricated. The Riverwalk Architect Charles Vincent George, and the Riverwalk Project Manager Hal Dickson were there for the progress inspection also. The Naperville Art League's commissioned "Landforms" was dedicated on the Riverwalk in September of 1984.
---Sheila Bruns, Naperville Art League
PN June 2009 issue has a photo of the Landforms maquette with Betty Zahn on the right, I think sculptor Jack Arnold in the middle and am checking on the lady's identity who is on the left. She resembles Naperville Art League's past president Ardys Goodridge but need to get that confirmed. The model is and always was red. Jim Moser purchased it.
---Julie Corwith, Member of Naperville Art League
I wa derson's Bookshop and picked up the June issue. Lo and behold I saw the nice article you wrote. It is articles like yours that is helping to get the word out of our Welcome Home events. ... Thank you again.
When I was checking everything on your webpage the other day, I clicked on the link to Positively Naperville (publication). I was telling everyone that Naperville looked like such a fun place to live. It seemed like there were endless community activities that everyone and anyone could participate in. I started thinking about that a lot and wondering if it was really like that there, or did it just appear to be that way because all of that great stuff was condensed to a few brief pages. ... Curious-- How big is Naperville, population wise? It has a small town feel to it, from this point of view. But I was wondering how that could be, sitting on Chicago’s back doorstep like you all are.
---Sawn Swenson, Colonial Flag Foundation, www.healingfield.org in Sandy, Utah
Last night I had the honor of visiting Hines VA Hospital with the Naperville VFW. We do that every month. There, I met a Vietnam Veteran from Michigan who served 3 tours in Vietnam. He is in the spinal cord unit. While I played his bingo card for him because he is paralyzed we got to talking. He told me he has been married for 39 years and his wife comes to visit every weekend. I asked him how long he would be there. His answer was, “the rest of my life”. He told me how much he looks forward to our visits. I want to thank the Naperville community for their support of Veterans through the Buddy Poppy program. In these tough economic times we sold over 20,000 Poppies. Those monies are only used for Veterans programs and the support of active duty troops and their families. There are no admin costs so all funds collected are used for Veterans helping Veterans. Thank you for your generosity Naperville! Once again you showed what a great and caring community you are.
----Mike Barbour, Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873, Poppy Chairman
Thank YOU for the article in PN plugging our KidsMatter fundraiser at Lou's on June 22. Positively Naperville is packed full of Naperville News - and I love discovering what's happening in our community by simply scouring the pages for those nuggets of "positive" news! ... Hope your day is a great one!
---IdaLynn Wenhold, Executive Director, KidsMatter
TO PN COLUMNIST MARY CORRIGAN: Dear Ms Corrigan ..... I have lived in the same house in Naperville for 48 years and just recently published my book "The Hellyer Say." ... It has received excellent reviews and is selling very well in our great country and many foreign lands. I would be happy to drop off a copy of the book at your home. Thank you.
TO PN COLUMNIST MARY CORRIGAN: Your article in Positively Naperville about books by Naperville authors piqued my interest since I too am a Naperville author. My book titled The $5 Cup of Coffee is Ruining My Retirement was written with the intent of giving something back to the community. ... The $5 Cup of Coffee is Ruining My Retirement was written to provide guidance to people aged 35 to 57. The premise is that almost anyone can build enough wealth to be able to retire comfortably if they know how. The book will definitely raise their awareness. The challenge is to get the word out.
I want to thank you for your presentation to Kiwanis last evening. Many of us are regular readers of Positively Naperville, so it was interesting to get a behind the scenes perspective of what is involved in getting the publication out to the public. We appreciate that you give such good press to volunteerism in Naperville. Everyone seemed to enjoy the hand chimes – especially since we are a very “hands on” group.
---Dick Nelson, Program Chairman, Naperville Evening Kiwanis
Reply to David Thompson & Other Folks regarding Freight Car in Netzley Quarry:
There is no freight car at the bottom of any of the quarries. The big quarry was drained in the 50's with nothing on the bottom. We used to scuba dive in the Netzley Quarry (little quarry). There is still some equipment at the bottom, north wall, equipment for raising stone, east side about 1/2 way to the center there is a hand cart for haling stone, tracks that the cart is on, and on the south wall there is a lot of junk that was dumped there years ago. As should be noted nothing in the Centennial Beach, we see the bottom every year. What was called the double quarry, where the Park District Administration Office is, was filled in with both junk and clean fill. There was nothing on the bottom there before it was filled in by the city.
---Jon Ripsky
Once again the Naperville Big Band will be performing a big band jazz concert on at 7:45PM, Thursday, July 9 at the Naperville Community Concert Center. ... This is year seven (7) for the NBB, and each of those years you have been a great supporter, publishing an article in Positively Naperville. In addition, the NBB will be performing at CANTIGNY at 3PM, Sunday, July 12. ... Also, at 7:30PM, Saturday, August 15 at the NCCC, A Celebration in Big Band Jazz featuring the NBB and Ted Fredenhagen's Class Act II Big Band in a joint concert. ... So, once again, thank you for your support. It's very much appreciated.
---Ken Kalina
PN arrived today (June 1, 2009) ... What a hoot to be in the paper!
---Court Kenaston
I was absolutely thrilled with all of the businesses who came to the event and/or donated door prizes. This is what it is all about the local businesses and schools working together to provide a positive experience for our children. I know the committee members and I received many compliments from parents that evening. It was fun AND healthy! THANK YOU, PN, FOR COMING TO OUR HEALTH & FITNESS NIGHT (May 21) AND FOR ALL OF THE WONDERFUL ARTICLES ABOUT OUR MAY WATTS' WALK TO SCHOOL DAYS FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS!!
---Cindy Brennan, May Watts PTA Health and Fitness Committee
Naperville CARES’ Cuisine for a Cause raised over $118,000 to benefit the needy families of Naperville. This is the most ever that we have raised! With the needs of the community increasing we will be able to help more Napervillians experiencing economic stress. We cannot thank you enough for your support of our event. Thank you!
---Jeanne M. Buddingh, Member of the Board of Directors Naperville CARES
My dad sends me PN each month and I just saw a note in the May issue 'Positively Briefs' for the NCHS 30th reunion... And it made me realize I need to send you a press release for North's 30th reunion. I just submitted an electronic entry to Positively Briefs..."Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, NNHS Class of 1979 30th Reunion, 7PM, at the VFW in Naperville. For more information, contact NNHS1979@aol.com." THANKS!
---Tami Channell Shaw
To Patti Koltes: Loved your column in Positively Naperville (I have an ad on the last page / March Issue). I love Louisa May Alcott and even spent a few days looking at her letters and household accounts at the Houghton collection at Harvard (for an article I have yet to write!). I collect her books.
---Judy Brodhead
To Patti Koltes: Normally I pick up the many "junk papers" we receive in pink plastic bags on the front steps, and throw them away on my way into the house. Today, for some reason I opened one up and found "Positively Naperville." As I sat down to dinner I flipped it open to page 11 and there was your column. It was positively delightful. Thank you for sharing such wonderful and meaningful thoughts and experiences.
---Jacqueline Jablonski
Thanks for your suggestion to check out the links on Positively Naperville. I’ve been there to look for other things cause there’s such a wealth of information there but never thought to check out the links. OMG you can find everything but the kitchen sink there. I will use it often!
---Jan Erickson
For the past several years I've tried to find out when the Memorial Day service is at the Doughboy statue. Searching the Sun or the Daily Herald has been futile. Even calling the local VFW does not help. The May issue of PN gave me the info I wanted -- 8:50 AM. Thanks a lot, as I find that service much more meaningful than any parade.
---Dick Riederer
Just got back from Las Vegas where I participated in the Susan G Komen “Race for the Cure” for breast cancer. My sister is a survivor of that awful disease---and invited me along for a walk. As you can see from the attached picture I met the Mayor of Las Vegas along the route and had a chance to shake hands and say hello. ... Just had a chance to read, cover to cover, the latest issue of PN and wanted to say that I think it's the best newspaper in Naperville. The paper is up to date, informative and interesting to peruse. Thanks for the great job you do.
--- Court Kenaston
What you do in terms of community service is admirable. That’s the Rotarian spirit!
---Erlo Roth, www.labex-co.com
In the January issue of Positively Naperville, a rumor about a freight car in the quarry off the Riverwalk was mentioned. It was also stated that there would be more information in an upcoming issue. I look forward to each issue and have yet to see any further mention about this. Is that still to come?
---David Thompson
Editor's Note: We're still trying to track down the correct information. Some of the folks with opinions about it have different recollections. We're trying to get it right. Thanks for asking!
To Barbara Blomquist: I saw your column in the March Positively Naperville and I just want to say you are so right! We bought cap and gown for our daughter (5' 2") two years ago and the silly thing just hangs in a closet. Now our son is graduating, but at 6' 3" he can't (won't) wear his sister's so we have to buy one for him. I wouldn't mind the money - there are plenty of more expensive things we've ponied up for over the years - but to have it just hang around is ridiculous! ... Have you heard of anyone who could use cap and gown (although I guess it would have to be Naperville Central due to the colors)?
---Gillean Wilsak
Thanks to everyone who supported our (We Grow Dreams) Bowlathon this year! We had a record number of bowlers, lane sponsors, corporate and community supporters! We raised $25,000!! ... If you were unable to attend this year and would like to make a donation, please visit our website: www.wegrowdreams.org.
---Donna F. Jarmusz, We Grow Dreams, West Chicago, IL
Is it possible for you to e-mail me Scott Itter's column from the December 2008 issue of PN? My daughter, Kylie Bickler, was featured in his column and I'd love to have a copy of it for her scrapbook. Thank you.
---Chris Bickler
Editor's Note: Our tiny grassroots publication does not have a sophisticated electronic filing system that allows us to easily pull individual stories. We do, however, save a limited number of back issues. When available, we are happy to share them with our readers for the cost of mailing and handling which is $5 per back issue. Scott Itter's column was mailed upon request.
There's is a lot of good stuff about our wonderful town (in the April issue of PN). I read my buddy Cliff Lundeen's column. ... Cliff is into recipes ... Glen Ekey told me he just loves to eat, and Jo won't cook for him. It's survival 101.
---Ed Channell
PN really gives us a lift. We look forward to reading it every month.
---Rita Harvard
Please join us on Monday, April 6, in Ms. Freeman’s classroom as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Longwood Elementary School partnership with Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry. ... As the attached press release explains, Mayor Pradel will help us celebrate this milestone during a pizza party for the class that collected the most items in the latest food drive of this successful 20-year collaboration. Costco is generously supplying everything for the classroom pizza party, as well as an afternoon snack for the entire school.
It was great to see you at the Frozen Food Run that Mayor Pradel and (Asst) Chief Mikel did in February.
---Jody Bender, Community Relations Director, Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry, www.loaves-fishes.org
What a fun great cover. It is a super recap of the another terrific year for the WSI. A big thank you to Positively Naperville.
---B. Welsh
I've always dreamed of being a cover girl! LOL!!!
---Annette Wehrli
Editor's Note: Wehrli is pictured on the April cover driving the Naperville Trolley in the 2009 St. Patrick's Day Parade.
Thanks to Positively Naperville for support of community events such as our parade. If you have a local business that needs to connect with people in town, consider advertising in Positively Naperville. It's proven effective for the West Suburban Irish.
---Chuck Corrigan, President, West Suburban Irish, www.wsirish.org
Loved the April Positively Naperville. I have already picked up extra copies to send to Katie and my mom.
---Mary Corrigan
The collage on the cover of Positively Naperville is wonderful! Who did it?"
---Peg Price
Editor's Note: The photos from the St. Patrick's Day Parade were taken by Stephanie Penick. Graphic designer Lynette Klingbeil selected the photos to create the lasting impression of a glorious day when everybody celebrated the luck of the Irish.
I get more out of the little bitty articles in PN than the other papers And it's more community.
---Gwen Brewer
Good Afternoon! There are 2 Free Earth Day Computer Recycling Events taking place in the next weeks that may be of interest to people in Naperville who would like to celebrate Earth Day by doing something environmentally easy but responsible. These are family-centric events as well.
---David Kent, Marketing & Communications Assistant, Sims Recycling Solutions, Inc.
Editor's Note: Please see PN's April 2009 online calendar featured on this Web site. The first recycling event is April 18. The second one is April 25.
Response to Barbara Blomquist's column regarding "must-purchase" graduation gowns: You go girl! I'm all for recycling those graduation robes. Maybe the schools can keep them from year to year like they do band uniforms. Our choir keeps their choir robes and recycles them from old members to new members. Hope it catches on. My grandson graduates in 2011.
---Monika Werner
Positively Naperville provides a pivotal community service as a clearinghouse for election information. Thank you for making informed decisions much easier to make.
---Chris Bochenski
You have a done a great job and it seems like the word is getting around. (Calling all NHS students from the 30s and 40s / 6PM, June 30, at the VFW. Reunion for everyone who attended Naperville High School before NCHS opened in 1952.) If you'd like, it would be nice to have a reminder in May and June. It doesn't have to be long just a reminder someplace.
---Class of '47, Naperville High School
Thank you for all the exposure CARES received in your March edition of PN! We sincerely appreciate you featuring our Cuisine for a Cause event. Thanks a million!
---Jeanne M. Buddingh, Naperville CARES, Board of Directors
Our sincerest thanks go to Naperville Mayor George Pradel and Assistant Fire Chief Richard Mikel who went on a 2.5-minute shopping spree in the frozen food section of Jewel-Osco at 127 East Ogden Avenue to benefit Loaves and Fishes Community Pantry and DuPage PADS. The event was the kick-off of National Frozen Food Month in March.
Mikel collected $945.91 worth of food for DuPage PADS, beating Pradel’s $604.17 for Loaves and Fishes. Since both competitors broke the $500 goal, each charity was given a $265 cash bonus.
DuPage PADS has experienced a 34% increase in the number of participants compared to 2007. This food will help to support those living on little or no income.
Our guests are faced with insufficient income and don’t have a support system such as family and community support, a church group, or savings to sustain them through these difficult times.
Thanks to the generosity of Jewel-Osco and the Midwest Frozen and Refrigerated Food Association the tenants in our supportive housing program have freezers filled with abundance.
---Carol Simler, Executive Director, DuPage PADS, Inc.
Thanks for the excellent election coverage on the Web site. It’s EXTREMELY helpful.
---Alison Segebarth
I love your website with all the informative information about all the dates, candidates, and upcoming events. ... I appreciate for what all your paper is doing, and the news you pass on.
---Raj Durga
Thanks again and always for your support of NCO!!

In Response to a Shout Out to Rita Harvard!
As for the Naperville Nostalgia in the March PN, I will tell you which one is correct. Actually, all three responses are correct and yet incorrect at the same time. ... Peg Yonker said the ladies were preparing boxes for the ice cream for the man in the back. The woman to the right was filling the cartons while the ladies were opening and then closing the boxes and putting them on the conveyer belt. The man who was there was only filling the large metal cans with ice cream. The woman filling the cartons never spilled a drop!! She was so proud of that and rightfully so!! ... Mary Ann Bobosky wrote that her SS Peter and Paul class took the tour to observe the Cock Robin staff. If she was talking about being an the ice plant production then it might have been C.R. If she was there as a student, it would have been Prince Castle. So she might have been 100% correct. ... Ray Schumacher said the lady on the right was Mrs. Warner. She was not Mrs. Warner but Mrs. Campbell, mother of Mrs. Worner. Mrs. Worner (note spelling) was the wife of Roger Worner who was with Brummel's car agency. Ray was close!! And I do think the photo is from Prince Castle days since later a piece of machinery replaced all the ladies on the line. I don't know when that machine was purchased. ... This was fun. You're doing a super job with PN.
---Rita Harvard
Editor's Note: Rita Harvard is the daughter of Grace and Walter Fredenhagen, founders of Prince Castle and Cock Robin Ice Cream.
WOW! ... Thanks so much for writing not one but two great articles. ... Thanks too for including all those pictures of Kiwanians and Kiwanis activities. It is greatly appreciated. It's going to be a period of hardship for so many people, and we want to do all we can to enable more people than ever to have fun at Pancake Festival and raise as much money as possible to help organizations who help others. ... You are providing a great service with Positively Naperville. Keep up the good work.

Goodbye, American!
A farewell to our nation's beloved radio newsman
Mr. Harvey,
while standing by
for the news today,
we heard sad news
that has cast a pall
over our nation.
Newscasters are reporting
that you are dead.
It's not a good day.
All the same,
Americans' sadness
is sweet sorrow.
It is good grief.
Our lives are wealthier
because you invested your life
in us.
Like the famous apostle
whose name you bore,
your message has impacted millions.
And as was true of Saint Paul,
your words will continue to live on.
Whether spoken or written,
your daily epistles
were missals of truth and life
sprinkled with grace and peace.
You reported on
what others failed to see
(or refused to).
You would not simply
give the headlines
related to our sin-tinged world.
To you, the top of the front page
was rarely the bottom line of truth.
There was always
"the rest of the story."
And now, Mr. Harvey,
page five.
At long last,
you are experiencing
the rest of your story.
The ultimate rest stop
on the adventure of a lifetime.
Eternal rest.
And while we struggle
with feelings of loss this day,
you've gained what no one
can ever take from you.
Life after death
with the very One
who conquered death
through his post-crucifixion
resurrection.
That's the Gospel truth.
That's Good News.
In light of that,
we do not simply bid you
goodbye, Mr. Harvey.
Many of us will see you again.
And to that end,
employing two little words
that marked your work
for seven long decades,
we simply say
"good day!"
---by Rev. Greg Asimakoupoulos, February 28, 2009

We’re announcing a HeartAware initiative. ... We really want to reach the folks who are “ticking time bombs” out there. Need to get to them before they go off. And, we’re working on pushing the prevention message. This is a quick, easy, free way to avert a serious problem (death!) down the road. Down the road, in some cases, may not be that far off. ... HeartAware is an online risk assessment, available at www.edward.org/heartaware. The assessment, which takes about five minutes, asks simple questions, offers information about heart disease and, most importantly, provides a quick response by Edward Heart Hospital and action steps when a person is identified as being at risk for heart disease or stroke.
---Keith Hartenberger, Edward Hospital
Thank you so much for the article in the Positively Naperville. Very nice. We got several calls re. the International Festival and they said they heard about it from your article.
---Bessma Shammas, Department of International Affairs, North Central College
Thank you for taking the time to add us to your local links page. Might you possibly be able to change the name of our organization to Illinois Student Assistance Commission? This best describes our agency.
I also think it is very appropriate to be on the college scholarships page (http://www.positivelynaperville.com/scholarship.html) and teen scene pages (http://www.positivelynaperville.com/teenscene.html), as really our agency is all about making college affordable for Illinois students--especially in these trying times. We run the State of Illinois MAP grant program and administer the federal programs for the state as well.
---Paul Palian
I was born on October 22, 1946, the same year as the tragic train wreck in Naperville that took place on April 25, 1946. We lived just a block or block and a half from the tragic collision. My father, John Spinner, who worked at Kroehler's at the time, was one of the many people who was at the site helping out. Our family kept my mother Louise, who was pregnant with me, away from the site because they thought the trama might affect the pregnancy.
I was clearing out some files today and came across an article on the tragedy that took place 63 years ago this April. I was wondering why there was never a memorial set up at the site in commemoration of the people who lost their lives on this day. I have never seen a list of the casualties from the wreck.
Were there any people from Naperville, or were they all from some other single destination or a variety of destinations? I know your site is Positively Naperville and this is a tragic occurrence, but why can't we make a positive out of a negative? Why can't the city still put up a sign or memorial at or near the site? Why can't we investigate the list of casualties and if there is a town from which most of these people came from, why can't we inform them of a memorial service that would take place in conjunction with the erection of this memorial.
Couldn't the schools work on oral histories from people still alive who witnessed this event? I can see all sorts of research projects and contests that schools could work on. I'm sure that if all the deceased had been from Naperville, there would have been many memorials. However, these deceased certainly deserve our prayers and remembrances in a form similar to which we would have given our own.
Couldn't the Burlington railroad or the other railroad involved in this collision step up and defray some of the costs and be involved in the development of a proper memorial. I can't understand why nothing has been done before in this regard. But, it is never too late.
Whatta say? I'd love to be present at such a commemoration. Yes, it can be done and if any town can do it, Naperville can - I'm positive! ... Anxious to hear your response.
Thanks so much for putting all that great candidate information on your web site. That is a real service for voters. And thank you so much for all the links to our web site. I just wanted you to know that, because of the number of candidates running for District 204 school board, we have moved the forum to the WVHS auditorium. And in order to use that facility, we had to change the date to 7PM, Tuesday, March 3. Our webmaster is out of town until late next week, so we have not yet changed the info on our web site. ... Thanks again!

Just curious - is the last Cock Robin still open?

Positively Naperville is a great monthly newspaper! Of course, we enjoy reading "Faithful Reflections" by Bob Atkins, Jr.! It inspires us.

In honor of the National Day of Service, held on January 19, 2009, Naperville Area Humane Society would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers for all their service to the organization. On any given day, NAHS has volunteers cleaning cages, walking dogs, socializing cats and helping in the office.
NAHS currently has over 300 active volunteers dedicating more than 400 hours each month to help care for all the animals. The organization could not do what it does every day without the help of the dedicated volunteers. Once again, thanks to all of you for what you do, not only for the Naperville Area Humane Society but to enhance the quality of life in our community.
---Linda L. Linford, Executive Director, Naperville Area Humane Society
The main reason for the e-mail is Positively Naperville (sent to Arizona) allowing Cliff Lundeen to fulfill his secret desire to be a columnist. I didn't realize computer work was so slow in Chicago that allowed time to write. ... Unfortunately, as time passes, I recognize fewer and fewer names in PN. Being out of town so much does have its disadvantages.
---Chuck George
Cliff's doing a great job on the column (Cliff's Tales from the Rails) and I know he'll be quite successful for all.
---Liz Zienty
Editor's Note: Under the title "DeLIZcious," Liz Zienty wrote the cooking column for more than three years and PN appreciated every yummy recipe. Liz suggested Cliff Lundeen would be a good person to take over her monthly effort.
I had the chance to listen to the band One More Time a few months ago at Frankie's Blue Room and they are better than ever! Between the vocals and Robbie Steininger's hot guitar licks their sound is very tight. Not only do they sound great but they really got the crowd on their feet with their dance-able mix of music. I would love to see them at Naperville's biggest outdoor event, Ribfest!
---Jan Erickson
Editor's Note: Jan's testimonial arrived in response to an ad that appeared in the January 2009 issue. Information on how to book the band One More Time can be found at www.onemtime.com.
Your article was noted by many. Thank you. The title was great!!! (Calling all NHS students from the 30s and 40s / 6PM, June 30, at the VFW) Please give credit to the Class of '47. There is no different news coming along about it, and some questioned if there was a dinner after the finger food? ...Finger food is the dinner or the evening meal. ... We’re suggesting to the few that questioned to eat a bowl of soup before coming if they think it would be inadequate. No one seemed to think that it would. Happy for you that the paper has a great "readership"!
---Class of '47, Naperville High School
Thanks for adding our "Ugliest" contest to your website. Just got the chance to check it out.

I hope you're doing well today, Happy New Year! I know we spoke in the past about how much I enjoy reading Positively Naperville... as well as discussed how our new studio, Dw Johnson Photography, could be included in your publication. OK, for the last 20 years I have wanted to create a book of memories and PHOTOS of our beloved Camp Seager. You see, I was and always will be a Plank Road Gal even though our farm has been gone since the 80's. ANYBODY who has photos or memories, please share. I would like pictures of Bethany (the old hotel) The Tabernacle (where church services were held) The Dining Hall, The Candy Store and of course, The Cabins and the old bridge, Can anybody help? Thanks so much, and anybody who used to sled down the old hill knows it's the best place in town for sledding!!!

Thanks so very much for shining the spotlight on our youth (December 2008 issue) who were recently recognized for the excellent ways in which they serve. KidsMatter applauds your obvious commitment to helping Naperville recognize the importance of young role models who "Positively" exemplify what it means to donate your time, talent and most especially your heart to helping others.

Can you confirm that an entry was received from Edie Postiglione, on Saturday, Dec 6, about 4:45PM?

Yes, it's 2 in the morning, and I'm reading Positively Naperville. You see, it all began on a cold and dreary night when the dog started barking at something moving -- probably a coyote -- in the back yard in the wee early hours. That's what they call that time of the night, because that's what the dog needs to do, when she's awake and barking. And if she's barking at something in the back yard, it's time to take her out in the front yard to do her work. And there on the front porch was the latest edition (December) of Positively Naperville. And whenever it arrives, or if I find it in the rack at Wilma's, I positively just can't put it down until I've seen what all the fine folks have to say.
And there on page 9 under Naperville Nostalgia, by our old friend Popular Demand, is a great picture of three pioneers of Naperville's City Manager form of government, which was voted in by referendum in 1969. The following year C. William "Bill" Norman started on as City Manager. He's the fellow in the center of the picture. To the left in the picture is Allan Poole, director of Water & Wastewater back in those days, and the only one still with the city today -- now as the Public Utilities Director. To the right in the picture is G. Kenneth "Ken" Small, our mayor back then.
The three of them, along with Ned Becker -- running the transportation department -- set the stage to build Naperville into the great city it is today. They were the foundation upon which all of today's city grew. There were so many people involved along the way, but these men set the standards which attracted such a diverse business base to our fledgling community of less than 23,000 people in 1970.
I'm looking forward to picking up a copy of Kay Stephens' story about Ken Small and his vision for a thriving downtown, a strong business base and great neighborhoods. But not in these wee hours. Good night.
---Steve Hyett
I heard I was in the picture in Positively Naperville (Naperville Nostalgia). That photo was taken back in 1972 for the groundbreaking of the Springbrook Water Reclamation Center in the south part of Naperville. I had started my job as director of Water and Wastewater in 1992. I have the original 8 1/2 x 11 photo back when we had long hair and wore white suits. The rest of the photo shows us with shovels.

HOLIDAY GREETINGS FOR THE TROOPS! Veterans Day makes me want to say “thanks” to all the men and women who over the decades have defended our freedom and country. With over 150,000 soldiers stationed overseas, we want to help and make their holidays a little special…we can all make a difference with a simple card or letter!
Everyone has 5 minutes to write a holiday card or letter to a soldier. Ryan Hill Realty will be collecting cards, letters and holiday wishes at our downtown office at 15 W Jefferson, Naperville.
Just address your holiday greeting card or letter: To An American Hero. Sign it and add a thank you. You do not have to have a pro or con position about war; this is about acknowledging the men and women who work for the Red, White & Blue. A simple thank you for their service to our country and a personal holiday greeting from you will help to brighten their holidays knowing that so many of us appreciate what they are sacrificing for our country.
The goal is to collect as many cards & letters as possible…1000 maybe 10,000 the more the better! Everyone young and old can get behind this and send a holiday greeting to someone in the military.
Ryan Hill Realty will collect letters & cards starting today, through Dec 8, 2008. At that time, we will box them up and Ryan Hill will ship them to the troops in time for the holidays. The collection box will be located right at the front door of our office at: 15 W. Jefferson in downtown Naperville. Just drop off your card or letter,
We thank you for participating in this holiday greeting effort for our troops.
-—Jack Persin, Managing Broker / President, Ryan Hill Realty
When we were kids back in the early 70's, Dave Wehrli told me that there was a train car at the bottom of the quarry across the street from NCHS. I have stated this as fact to anyone who would listen for decades. Dave doesn't know where he heard this, but swears it is true. Can anyone confirm?

I want to keep you posted on our WOWs. (Walk on first Wednesdays at May Watts) Looks like it is going to be another beautiful day tomorrow....so, look for the children walking ... waving their American flags! Thank you so much for joining us in October! Of course, it was very exciting for us just a few days ago when we saw our Positively Naperville on our porch! We loved the article about the May Watts walk to school day and the pictures in the paper were a few of Amanda's 3rd grade friends.

Congratulations on another wonderful issue of Positively Naperville! (November 2008) Thanks for including the Kids' Best Friend Dinner article and calendar listings.

I want to thank you for promoting the NCTV17 Election night coverage in Positively Naperville. We think it is essential to cover these important local races – we are the only television station that concentrates on this area. Also I want to congratulate you on the timeliness of your publication. You published pictures from two events on Thursday that I attended; the paper with those pictures was on my doorstep on Saturday morning! That is a very quick turn-around for a monthly publication – applause to you! I noticed and truly appreciate your efforts. Thanks for all you do.

The City of Brotherly Glove (and Ball)
A six month campaign ends in victory
The City of Brotherly Glove (and Ball)
where Phillies gallop free
deserves to hear a cracked bell ring.
That one called Liberty.
Long may it peal! Cheese steaks around!
Yes, C B Park is holy ground.
The citizens of this storied town
can bank on more to come.
And Harry Kalas claims a thrill
he dreamed about in Naperville.
At Central High he fantasized
about World Series fame.
Old Jamie Moyer can retire.
He's reached for what he'd long aspired.
To go the distance with a team
he's loved since he was young.
In such contentious scary times
when all economists seem blind
and when the candidates spew hate,
nine innings calms our stress.
And so in Independence Hall
beside the bell let's place a ball.
A horsehide sphere that calls to mind
our national pastime.
* Harry Kalas, the play-by-play broadcaster for The Phillies since 1971 was born and raised in Naperville, IL (where Greg Asimakoupoulos lived from 1994-2005)
** At 45 years of age, Jamie Moyer is the second oldest pitcher to take the mound in a World Series .

TO SCOTT "DR. MUSIC" ITTER: When I e-mailed you regarding other forms of music than Rock prevail in Naperville, I had no idea how you would react to my statement. In my e-mail, I mentioned that the first joint big band jazz concert would be held at the NCCC in August. Your reply was that you would be in attendance. After the concert, you came forward and introduced yourself to me. I can't tell you how much I appreciated meeting you.
Well, I read your column in the October issue of Positively Naperville. Needless for me to say, your column about the joint big band jazz concert is super great. Thank you for attending the concert, and writing such a supportive, beautiful column about this era of music.
Obviously, as you have mentioned in your column, the large audience in attendance spoke for itself. Consequently, plans are on the table to program another joint big band concert in the summer of 2009. I'll be in touch when the plans for this concert are finalized.
Thanks again Scott, for your support and interest in the NMB Naperville Big Band. I hope we have an opportunity to meet once again in the near future!
---Ken Kalina, Director, NMB Naperville Big Band
Thanks a million for running the release for our museum group. We really appreciate it.
---Mike Hollman, Member of West Suburban Affiliate of Contemporary Art
We just found out that Belgio's Catering is going to donate the food (at Hill Middle School PTSA Gingerbread Junction Craft Fair, 9AM-3PM, Sat., Dec. 6), so I've updated the press release a bit. ...Once again, thanks so much for promoting our event!
---Kelli Peradi, Publicity, Hill Middle School PTSA Gingerbread Junction
Once again, I have enjoyed the recent article written by Patti Koltes in ‘Positively Naperville’ (Checking Out). I think Patti writes a wonderful short story about a snapshot in the life and times of people like me (50 somethings) and reaches out to the whole community, and beyond, in spirit and in content. She does this with a sense of humour and gives a feeling of being in the moment. ... I look forward to continuing to read her articles in your paper.
---Sandra Reed, Currently living in Hereford, England
Thank you for your article in Positively Naperville about former mayor Ken Small, "The Defining Years" written by Kay Stephens. ... I remember when Ken served as mayor, and it was truly a transitional time for Naperville. I only hope a time will come when the achievements of Ken Small will be recognized by the City of Naperville in a meaningful way. Although I recently moved to St. Charles after 45 years in Naperville, my heart still lies in the community where I watched the growth from a small town of 26,000 souls to the thriving city it is today. It wouldn't have happened without the leadership of so many people, including the late Mayor Small.
---Shirley Pace, St. Charles, IL
Thanks for getting NNHS Marching Huskies photos in (October 2008 issue of PN). The kids are always so delighted to see that they've been covered in the newspaper! ... I crank those press releases out as fast as I possibly can...I understand if we miss the deadline. I appreciate whatever coverage you can give us. Thanks again.
---Vickie Deppe, NNHS Marching Huskies Publicity
Thanks so very much for the nice write-up! I'd like to purchase 10 more copies of PN and don't know how to do that. When (if) you have a minute, would you please advise?
---Kay Stephens

While attending a seminar in Las Vegas, I ran into Pete Rose, baseball's all time hit king. He autographed a basball for me and we took the attached picture. I thought it might be fun to share with PN readers. Thanks.
---Fred Spitzzeri
Editor's Note: Perhaps we can tie it into a story about how the Cubs perform in the World Series! We'll have to see what kind of space we have in the November issue.
Thank you for considering to include this in Positively Naperville - a great news forum for our community!
---Kathy Meyers, Troop 75 Secretary, Troop 75 Scout mom

I hope you had a nice summer...and did some walking! When we returned from vacation in mid-July one of the first things in our pile of mail that we looked through was "Positively Naperville." There we saw the wonderful coverage -- article and pictures of our WOW in June! I did not see you at May Watts that day, so if it was you or someone else... great job!
---Cindy Brennan, Coordinator of monthly walks on first Wed. at May Watts known as WOW!
It's been too long since I have gotten you information on the Naperville North High School plays!
I'm sure it's too late to make your print publication for an October production, but attached you will find the information on The Crucible. I think the director did a great job picking a play for Halloween. Hopefully, you can get this information on your web page.
---Gale Ganet, President, Friends of Drama Naperville North High School

Editor's Note: Over the years, readers worldwide have sent their Web site addresses and comments to Positively Naperville. We're always happy when they find us! Several years ago, a gentlemen in Italy found an old gold watch with the inscription of the First Naperville Bank (now Harris Bank) and he contacted PN for help to put him in touch with the bank's president.
I want to thank you for a fabulous resource on the PN Web site – Naperville Election Central!!! ... I just found it and am thrilled – here’s why – Monarch Landing will be hosting several “Meet the Candidate” events in Sept-Nov and I needed some information on the candidates for the press releases. This is the only source (media or otherwise) I could find with all of the elections and candidates represented and it’s terrific!!! ... Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I am a senior at North Central College of Naperville. I am also the special events coordinator for the Sport Management Association at NCC. We are a fairly new organization, now in our sophomore year, looking to give members experiences that not only help in their professional career, but can help them in life and as individuals as well. Being such a young organization, we have not been able to make many connections in surrounding communities. But we are going to make this change. That is why I reach out to you today. I am trying to find various community service activities that we can partake in. We want to not only help ourselves, but we also want to remember and assist our community as well. We want to be an active part of the communities around us. Do you have any programs that you feel would fit our needs? I hope that we can develop a strong bond between your community and our association. I would love to see what type of programs you offer. I hope to be hearing back from you in the near future. Thank you, and have a wonderful day.
---Blayne Sim, NCC Sport Management, Activities Director
Editor's Note: Anyone with volunteer jobs to fill, please contact Stephanie@positivelynaperville.com and she will forward your ideas to Blayne Sim. In the meantime, anyone who is seeking volunteer opportunities will find many contacts posted at http://www.positivelynaperville.com/volunteers.html.
Thanks so much for sharing the news about KidsMatter's Volunteer Fair and Family Day. What would we do without Positively Naperville to highlight our community opportunities - for young and old alike? ... Positively Naperville continues to be that umbrella that showcases our community's best. Thanks so very much!
---IdaLynn Wenhold, KidsMatter Executive Director, www.kidsmatter2us.org
I enjoy getting the Positively Naperville paper, however, in the latest issue there was a recipe for Pineapple Zucchini Bread calling for a #2 can of crushed pineapple. What is a #2 can? I have never seen pineapple
measurement or any measurement for that matter shown in that way. The recipe sounds very good, but I can't make it until I know how much pineapple to put in.
---Barb Nemeth
Editor's Note: A #2 can is a 20 ounce can, or about 2 1/2 cups. When I was a kid, we always referred to the #2 can as the standard or taller can as compared to the squatty kind for crushed and sliced pineapple.
Happy baking!
…I am an artist from Galena IL and my wife has been working with the Naperville Schools recently. Many of the people she works with suggested I do a “GraphicVision” image of Naperville and Naper Settlement. Perhaps your readers would be interested in a blurb about the whimsical Naperville pictures. The Canterbury Shoppe is carrying the canvas images… 10x40” and the mini canvas 5x20”….Thanks for your time… check www.paulchase.net for more info…and other local towns I have “re-created.”

Editor's Note: The Canterbury Shoppe is located at 175 W. Jackson Ave. across from the Riverwalk. It's a great place to visit for all types of seasonal and Naperville gifts.
I was just testing the link from your website to our church website and noticed it is going to the wrong location. ... Would you please correct the link so that when folks click on "Unity" (under Area Places to Worship), it takes them to www.unityinnaperville.org.

Editor's Note: We really appreciate it when readers tell us that Web links become disabled or when Web addresses change. Thanks for helping us keep our links to the community current!
I just want to give you a recap of the Kick-Off and thank you again. ...We had 140 guests, not including returning members, and 50 joined the Club on the spot. That brings us to around 240 members, just a couple of weeks into the new season. ... We had lots of ladies, a couple of husbands and a multitude of children. ... Unfortunately, the Mayor was not able to join us this year ... he was called away to Washington, ... but hopefully the Mayor will be able to join us next year. I am happy to share with you the incredible results of the First King’s Court Showcase Home Tours to benefit Sharing Connections Furniture Bank. ... We are truly blessed to have such an extraordinary response---the $20,000 came from the Showcase Home Tours itself and the two major gifts (totaling $100,000) resulted from the event and home sale, separate from the tour proceeds. This is unprecedented for us and we look forward to helping so many more families with the funds. Thanks!
