We would appreciate having publicity for our Craft Fair in "Positively Naperville." I did submit a calendar listing on the website, but I did not know if that covered the newspaper, too. If this is redundant, I apologize! ... CREAM OF THE CROP CRAFT FAIR / 9am to 3pm on Saturday, October 1 in the St. Margaret Mary Parish Center, 1450 Green Trails Dr. (at Naper Blvd.), Naperville. Sponsored by the Sharing Parish Program. Free admission, Lunch available, Chinese Auction. Call Martha at (630) 961-2169. ... Thank you.
—Martha Rose
I LOVE your dog-filled front page! It is soooooooo clever!
—Jini Clare
Thank you so much for the addition of our garage sale in last month's Positively Naperville. ... We had a fabulous sale on Friday. (Due to the rain on Saturday, we did not have any customers.) Kevin and I really appreciated the advertising. ... Thanks.

Thank you. Thank you. "Stars N Strikes for our Military HEROES Candlelite Bowl" held Aug 13 at Town & Country Lanes in Joliet was a great success! The Naperville Smart Grid Initiative is here, so “plug into the choice” by learning about it. As a 28-year Naperville resident and considering my technical, marketing, industry background, and education, I am convinced the NSGI is a win-win for all of us to have better control over our energy use and what we pay for it.
As you know, the better informed we are the more we accept things. I urge all residents to learn about NSGI at www.naperville.il.us.
With NSGI, the City of Naperville gains infrastructure upgrades and operational efficiencies to keep the lights on in the 21st Century. Thank you.
Thanks again for all you have done for the City and yours truly over the many years..
—Chuck Schlabach, NSGI Ambassador
It was fun to get together for the Jaycees picture last evening (Aug. 17). Good success with your 10 years in business. Who would've thunk it?
—Brand Bobosky

I noted the ten year anniversary of Positively Naperville will occur this Labor Day weekend. You have done an absolutely positive job of creating a wonderful newspaper with lots of articles, news coverage, and pictures talking about our great city and the people and places that make it a great place to live, work, or merely visit. Barbara and I join the chorus of people saying congratulations on the first ten years, and we’re looking forward to many more to come!
Most sincerely and with much appreciation,
—Dick Galitz
CONGRATS ON 10 YEARS! Can’t remember life without Positively Naperville and wouldn’t want to. Balanced reporting of good news, in-depth political coverage for local elections and great support for nonprofits and smaller gems in the community. Thanks for all you’ve done and do for Naperville and I hope you have another phenomenally successful 10 years (and beyond).
—Alison Segebarth

In the late 1970s due to the book ROOTS I was inspired to write a song about growing up in Naperville. I recorded it in 1980 (playing the guitars and singing myself) and re-recorded it in better sound in the mid 1990s. ... The Naperville Sun did an article about this song some years ago (during a recent city anniversary) but failed to include a link in case anyone wanted to hear the actual song. ... I would love for people to at least hear it, especially those of my age (58) who are remembering a lot lately of the old town and how it was. I could type a million memories of my own but I will let the song speak for me instead, if that is allowed.
The song can be found by copying and pasting the following YouTube address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6-aOM711yQ
It is also posted on the “Downtown Naperville, The Way It Used To Be” Facebook page.
I hope you can publish this and perhaps even give a listen yourself, and find that you can enjoy it (I did send a copy of this to Paula Zahn when she was still on CBS’ Early Morning News program in the 1990s, and she sent a very nice note back about how she enjoyed it but it made her a bit sad. )
... Nice web site, excellent work...
—Chuck Gauger
Submitted July 17, 2011
Editor's Note: Gauger moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 1969 where he still resides. His last visit to Naperville was in 2006. He said "his peers" also have posted memories on Naperville Nostalgia at www.positivelynaperville.com.
Thanks again. I really like PN. Can hardly wait until the first of every month.

Peggy Crawford on Facebook: yes it was awsome!! they did sell other stuff, i remember buying paper dolls and coloring books but i don't remember what else they sold, except penny candy, 2 for a penny!!!! if anyone has pictures it would be great, that was one of my fondest childhood memories.
Submitted July 9, 2011
Rita Fredenhagen Harvard Remembers: Yes! John and I both remember Reikes (sp?) candy store in downtown Naperville on the corner of Main Street and Jackson (Dean's Location). John insists it was more than a candy store, but I remember that it was a candy store with no other merchandise. Anyway, for a young kid it was paradise! Naper Settlement would have the correct spelling.
Submitted July 8, 2011
Peggy Crawford on Facebook: Does anyone remember Rykees candy store (not sure of the spelling) on Main street? it was there in the early 1960's.

Thank you for advertising Kara's lemonade stand on Facebook. Kara actually raised $324.00 which included a single check for $100.00 from a very generous couple who stopped by for a cup of lemonade!! ... Kara's brother, Niklas actually helped out a lot before Clara came over. ... I'm not sure if you had come and taken pictures earlier today of Kara and her brother, as well as her 3 chickens, Barbra, Legolas, & Gimli. I was at work and my mom thinks they were from Positively Naperville. Kara was just thrilled! ... Kara stayed open the whole day of the 4th, even selling her last cups after the fireworks. She took a 15- minute break for dinner (I forced her!). ... I hope you had a wonderful weekend.
—Eve Troe
Editor's Note: Yes, PN stopped by Kara's Lemonade Stand early in the day on July 4 on the way to Ribfest. At that time, Kara said she had raised slightly more than $80, and that they would split the proceeds equally between the Naperville Area Humane Society and Parkinson's Disease. Kudos to Kara, Niklas and Clara!
Memories generated at Ribfest 2011: Seeing Grand Funk Rail Road when they sang I'm Getting Closer To My Home and Hearing the Heroes of Woodstock singing Take a Little Bit of My Heart and Jefferson Starship singing If only Believe In Miracles brought tears to my eyes.

I am married to a USMC Vietnam Veteran and have heard many stories on how the men and women who served in this war were treated when they returned home and never thanked. I would like to share a recent personal event... Just recently my husband and I were at a local shopping center and my husband was proudly wearing his Marine jacket with various patches including a Vietnam patch. As we strolled along, a young Vietnamese man came up to my husband, extending his hand and thanked my husband saying, "If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be here today. Thank you Sir." Both my husband and I stood in amazement with tears in our eyes as the young man walked away. ... Vietnam Veterans, THANK YOU for serving our Country from Operation Welcome You Home an and all of our supporters!

Thanks for the extra publicity about our garden walk (Sat., June 25). This is the first time that we have had one open to the public in my experience as a member of the Naperville Garden Club, so any help in getting the word out is greatly appreciated! Positively Naperville is a good friend to the Naperville Garden Club!
—Marilyn Krueger, www.napervillegardenclub.org

To Columnist Ed Channell: Hi, Ed, I was in Naperville last weekend for my sister's 50th wedding anniversary and I saw your article in Positively Naperville. I enjoyed your humorous viewpoint...passing an ethics exam with flying colors makes you a poor candidate... sadly funny, actually. Anyhow, I'm writing not only to tell you that I enjoyed it, but also to ask if I could use it as an exam question for my daughter's ESL class. Your little story followed by three multiple questions like, "Who is the speaker in this presentation? What does the speaker say about politics? Why might someone vote for this candidate" Is this OK with you?
—Margaret Rainforth
After seeing photo of Jefferson Hill Shops on Facebook post: Sure brings back a lot of memories. Thanks. ... I will check out (Naperville Nostalgia)... Query about Hayden's Bakery to Naperville Nostalgia: In reply to the query about the bakery at 107 Jefferson—Hayden's Bakery 107 Jefferson—I found the following reference about my 2nd great-grand aunt: "Susan was born on Jefferson Ave (Later Heyden house)" Does anyone know when the Hayden or Heyden family started their bakery in Naperville? Does anyone know what year the current building at that location was built?

In spite of the cold temperatures and the brisk winds, we had an outstanding race with close to 1,100 runners and 130 volunteers, for the 12th Annual NCO Spring Ahead 5K and 10K and the Kids Fun Run. Without the tremendous support of all of our sponsors, we could not have had such a successful event his year. ... To Jennifer Berthold: It's been a million years since I last walked in Naperville. Naperville holds incredible memories from a time long ago. My three brothers and I attended NCHS in 1974. It seemed we moved away and never looked back, until now. My brother Carey is now grandfather of two, my brother Kelly is a grandfather of one and my brother Chris passed away from Menegitis in 2001. I have been teaching special education for 18 years. Though I have retired recently. ... We loved Naperville. We each have a set of positive memories we'll always hold close to our hearts. To Columnist Barbara Blomquist: What a coincidence that your column on Unshackled would appear in the same issue of Positively Naperville as our ad for our spring concert, featuring the Men's Choir from Pacific Garden Mission (p. 20)! We will be working with the choir at the Mission on the mornings of April 2 and April 30 in preparation of their coming to Naperville and being featured at Wentz in our Spring Concert.
Our 2011 theme is "Finding Common Ground". We hope that this focus will drop into the community dialogue of what is real value. Perhaps the questions are not so much about reapportioning the financial wealth as redistributing the opportunities. We hope PGM will be part of the inspiration that opens doors. Meanwhile, we get to do some door-opening for the men in the choir. One of the songs we hope to sing together is a Greg Gilpin tune called "Peace" which he has layered with the traditional "We Shall Overcome". NMGC will sing the Peace part and PGM will sing the other section. We all have so much to overcome to get to Peace!
Just wanted you to know.
—Bonnie Klee Roberts, Conductor, The Naperville Men's Glee Club
Editor's Note: "Finding Common Ground" will be performed by the Naperville Men's Glee Club with the Pacific Garden Mission Men's Choir at 3PM, Sun., May 8 at Wentz Concert Hall.

Ten years ago this September 11th, we all watched in horror as many tragic events unfolded before our eyes. Yet, there were many more beautiful acts of courage and love that overshadowed anything the terrorists could have inflicted.
Healing Field memorial flag displays began in an effort to help us visualize and comprehend the sheer enormity of human loss that occurred in the terrorist attacks that day and honor those acts of courage and love. .(The complete Healing Field story is posted on their Web site).. Our in-house Healing Field consultants have helped over 350 communities put successful events together. We have a tried and true handbook and system to assist in every way from forming committees to dealing with the media.
We are excited to join with you in making the Healing Field experience a reality in your community during this special year.

Our homepage links to photos of our Sept. 11 Memorial along the Naperville Riverwalk as well as to a page with reflections about the Veterans Day Week 2009 Naperville Healing Field. We will never forget as our grateful community continues to pay tribute around the clock.

Thanks for your reply to my submission for Naperville Nostalgia (Feb. 17 post). ... As I said, it was such a pleasant discovery when I Googled "Orrin Tucker, North Central College" last evening.
You asked where I live now. I guess the original small-town roots of my early Naperville years have made me love the small-town atmosphere. I live in Brooklyn, Connecticut, which has grown from about 5,000 to 7,000 residents in the nearly-30 years I have lived here. Brooklyn is an old town - almost all are around here - first setled. c. 1690, and incorporated in 1786, in northeast Connecticut. We are home to the "oldest continuous agricultural fair in the USA" - "continuous" being the key word.
I have a lot of memories of my old-time-Naperville, and would be happy to pass along any recollections that might have broader intererst than just to me, if you would be interested. Also, I would like to know if I can pose questions about certain things that may have changed in the years since I lived there.
I was out for a high school class reunion a couple of summers ago, and stopped in a local downtown bookstore and glanced at two different books of Naperville history. I didn't buy them, but am now interested, and I wonder how I can get information on them.
I am going to enjoy looking through the pages of Naperville Nostalgia and see what connects wth me....and, who knows, I might even run across a familiar name or two. Thanks.
—Bob Blackard, Brooklyn, Connecticut

Naperville is the luckiest town in the world! ... I just wanted to share a quick story that I thought you might enjoy.
We just moved into Naperville in Fall 2009, so spring of last year was our first spring in the new house. As the garden and lawn started to grow, my two older girls Maggie and Anna (9 and 8 at the time) discovered the most amazing thing - a patch of clover in the yard filled with four-leaf clovers! The girls were so thrilled as they had never found even a single four-leaf clover in their lives, and then suddenly in one afternoon they found over twenty.
They were thrilled. "We have moved into the luckiest town in the world!!" the girls shouted. They spent the rest of the spring and summer scouring that patch and found a total of well over 150 four-leaf clovers. We took it as a sign that we had surely moved into the best place in the world. And the more we have gotten to know our neighbors and the town, the more we know that it is true.
Now another year has passed, the yard in covered in snow, and as St. Patrick's Day approaches, my girls know they already have a lucky patch of four-leaf clovers ready to bloom in the spring.
Many thanks to you and your staff for a great publication!
—Andrea Galo
Does anyone have a decent timeline and/or history of the Last Fling? What year did it start? Different locations it was held?
—Dan Bulley, dbulley@wideopenwest.com
Editor's Note: Last Fling started in 1965 as Rick Motta's idea for a Chamber of Commerce event that came to fruition the following year in the Centennial Beach Parking Lot. After a few years or so, it moved to Knoch Park. We've been unable to pin down the exact year the Jaycees took it over from the chamber (We welcome the info. Anybody?) and some of the other locations it might have taken place. In the early 1970s, the midway was set up in the parking lot behind then-Oswald's Pharmacy. In the mid-1970s, it spilled over to Jefferson. Tom Miers recalled that when he was president of the Jaycees in the late 1970s, the Last Fling really stepped up its efforts to raise funds to sponsor the Jaycees Marina as part of the Sesquicentennial gift for the Riverwalk. Then the event moved to Jackson and Rotary Hill where it has remained ever since.
To Columnist Mary Corrigan: What a thrill it was to open up the new (February) issue of Positively Naperville and read your feature on our book, 101 Things to Do in Naperville. Just like you, we have many favorite activities in Naperville, which made the book a joy to write.
In fact, Mary Jane and I are monthly attendees at Quigley's Quiz NIght, and always have a lot of fun ... even though we haven't walked away with too many prizes! Also, Mary Jane recently ran a quiz night at Quigley's when the owner successfully bid on her trivia presentation at a Families Helping Families auction. So, we've probably crossed paths there a time or two. ... Thanks so much for spreading the word about our book.
—Ellen Brosnahan
I can't get the Feb. issue? Is there a problem?
—Ed Channell
Editor's Note: Naperville just experienced its third biggest blizzard in history. Still, the current month's issue is posted online at www.pnmonthly.com where it can be downloaded. Copies of the publication are available for pick-up at Casey's Foods, Roseland Draperies & Interiors, Cafe Buonaro's, Minuteman Press, Municipal Center, Kroehler Y and about 20 places. It is not distributed from any Florida locations where Ed Channell spends the off-season.
Just read my latest Positively Naperville: great issue! (February 2011)

January 2011 - Find the month's most recent greetings at the top.
The January issue of Positively Naperville is my all-time favorite! The snowmen pictures are the greatest. I hope you will continue the "snowman watch" each year. All that appeared were great, but I especially applaud the college kids for "filling" up the Riverwalk Amphitheater with gladiators.
I'd also like to say something about the kids doing something great such as building snowmen instead of knocking down mailboxes.
—Nancy Davis
Hello I am also a former resident of Naperville, but have returned to my native home city of LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS. We are neighbors!!! ... I found your link in Naperville Nostalgia. I left Naperville in 1981 with great pain in my heart as I loved that place. My oldest daughter graduated from NCHS in 1980, my 2nd daughter had finished her sophomore year at NCHS and my son had just finished 8th grade at Lincoln Jr. High. ... I love to read of people I knew, or even if I didn't know them, I loved reading what they had to say about Naperville.
I lived on Emerald Lane in Moser Highlands. Would love to share memories with you.
—Ruth Flagg
It was kind of cool to look at the January issue and see pictures from the Toys for Tots event at CityGate Grille – a good memory of a nice night. Thanks.
—Alison Segebarth
Love the snowmen in this month's PN!
—Nancy Wiersum

Thanks for starting this Kindness movement. Let’s hope it really spreads. I like the acronym – KIN (Kindness in Naperville). Clever!

My wife Lisa and I want to wish all of you and your family all the warmth and joy this season has to offer. As we gather with our families, let's take the time to give thanks for the blessings of the year just passed, to rejoice in our children, to enjoy the company of family and friends, and to find hope in year to come.
I'd like also to send a special greeting to all the brave men and women in uniform serving our country in lands far from home. You're in our thoughts and our prayers.

Happy Holidays and a Joyous New Year!
—Michael Connelly, State Representative, 24W500 Maple Avenue | Suite 213 | Naperville
We had a busy year with so many missions: welcome homes, sendoffs, special services, honor missions and sadly KIA's. Sometimes we wonder how can I attend all and yet you continue to come out to honor our Heroes and families, taking time from your personal life to show honor, respect and most importantly thanks to our Troops and their families. With this, we are recommitting in 2011 to continue our missions until they all come home! ... Thank you for all you do to support our Military both active and Veterans from Operation Welcome You Home!
Please remember to check our calendar for Mission updates/changes or check from your mobile phone as Missions can and do change sometimes at the last minute.

Do you have a list of organizations that are looking for volunteer help? I checked your web edition of PN and could not find it or a search option but I might have missed this option. ... Thank you.
—Joan Holland
Editor's Note: At this time, our Web site does not have a "search" feature. The direct link to the Volunteer Opportunities is http://www.positivelynaperville.com/volunteers.html. It's chock full of suggestions, too.
Years ago, in Naples, Florida, I was shopping in a department store. I had my item in hand and went to the clerk at the counter. A lady came up behind me and tried to nudge me out of the way. I said to her, very kindly, “I’ll bet you are in a hurry, so go ahead in front of me. “ The lady didn’t smile nor say thank you, but did go in front.
After she left, the clerk reached under the counter and gave me a lovely gift of bath oil and bath powder. She said the store was rewarding people who did good deeds. I was so impressed.
To this day I remember that and think about it. My husband is very courteous. He is a gentleman. I think the older men are this way, but I don’t see that much in the younger ones. It doesn’t take any more of our time to be a gentleman.
It would be nice if Naperville were to adopt a slogan of “The Courteous Town,” or ”The Kindly Town.” I see so many rude things happening, in the stores, in their cars, etc. Maybe we should all consider rewarding random acts of kindness, so they will think about it more.
—Bev Patterson Frier
Editor's Note: Several years ago when Bev Frier first was recognized for her kindness in Naples, she mentioned it as an idea PN might want to embrace. We are grateful she recently put her thoughts in writing to remind us to promote civility that oftentimes is disregarded in our encounters these days. We also take note of a recent fortune cookie fortune that said: "Be kind whenever possible. It's always possible."

My family and I lived in Naperville (1831 Cranshire Lane, 60565) from August of 1991 through August of 1995....and just loved it there. I am from Houston, Texas, and that's where we were transferred to when we left. I did not want to go back home....in fact, as my husband likes to tell it, was taken kicking and screaming. Naperville was my new home, but we had to go where the paychecks took us. My husband and I both worked for Shell at the time. We are now retired and live in the San Antonio area.
...I love reading "Positively Naperville"... Even though we were there for just a short time, we all fell in love with the place. My son met his wife there. They were boyfriend and girlfriend in junior high ...broke up while we were there, but remained good friends and continued to be friends when we moved to Texas. ... He went to Texas A&M and she went to Purdue. ... They were married on the beach in Jamaica 4.5 years ago, and they are happy as two peas in a pod ... in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but are in the process of transferring to Woodland Hills, California. ... Naperville is wonderful!

Do you offer tours of your publication or printing facility? We have a group of Tiger Scouts who would like to earn a patch for visiting a printing facility and reading a newspaper. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Dear Stephanie in Naperville, from Donal in Dublin, Ireland.
My grandmother got married in Nelson, British Columbia, in 1918 and is described on the marriage certificate as a nurse living in Naperville, Illinois. Since learning this fact for the first time last year, I have naturally taken a great interest in your town. I assume that she must have been a nurse in the Edward Sanatorium of the time. I wonder whether anyone might have written about the sanatorium. I have gathered whatever information I could find on the internet. My grandmother's name was Mary White, from Listowel, Co. Kerry. She died a widow in 1933, leaving a young girl, my mother (d. 2008). My e-mail address is donalmcmahon@eircom.net. ... Thank you and best wishes from Ireland.
—Donal McMahon, donalmcmahon@eircom.net
Editor's Note: We forwarded this inquiry to folks at Edward Hospital, who were eager to help us connect with ways to find an answer! We love it when we receive inquiries from across the big pond!
Follow Up from Donal McMahon on Nov. 8: Thank you so very much for attending to my query so quickly! And please thank your contacts in Edward Hospital too. I deeply appreciate your kindness to a complete stranger. And thank you for posting my message in the Greetings section of PN.
If you have time, could I impose on you to do me one last favour? Could you ask the PR person in the Hospital whether there exists a register of nurses for the 1910s and whether the name 'Catherine/Mary White (b. Kerry, Ireland, 1888) is listed on it?
Good for you for being able to trace your Irish ancestors back so far. I suppose you know that our 1901 and 1911 censuses are now available online, *for free,* at: www.census.nationalarchives.ie. This is a terrific resource for finding out about your Irish roots. I have already told some of my Irish-American relations in Arizona about it. Your readers, I'm sure, would be very interested in it. Even Irish people are mining it for information about their families.
Editor's Note: Bryan Ogg at Naper Settlement is now in pursuit, too.

Luke’s picture is on page 8 (Download full issue at www.pnmonthly.com) or pick up a copy at the Fry Family Y, Casey's Foods, Anderson's Bookshop, Minuteman Press, etc.) ... Luke is famous! ...okay, well, kind of. ... I think we’re going to have to make Nancy’s Pumpkin Pie this Thanksgiving since Luke is looking forward to it! ... And of course, many thanks to the Owner of Quigley’s Irish Pub, Nancy Quigley, for the ad and PN for being such good friends of Laura, Luke and yours truly.
—Brian G. Fry
Awesome! The front cover of PN is soooooooooooooo neat.

First off, thank you so much for the wonderful photos and story in the centerfold of the November issue of PN. We are so proud to have hosted this event and you just put the icing on the cake for all of us. Can’t thank you enough!
Now, for some great news that PN is to thank for! Yesterday, my father in-law received a phone call from the son of the Lt. of Company “C” of their battalion. He saw the story about the 672nd in PN and lives on Columbia in Naperville! He wants to be added to the mailing list. His Father passed away in 1994, but used to attend the reunions years ago. Too bad he didn’t know about the reunion almost walking distance from his home. Guess he missed seeing it in past issues. Can you believe this?!
Well, we are so thrilled for this whole experience. It was so worth the year of planning. Thank you again,

My famous Disney-quality animatronic Halloween show started in Naperville back in the 90s— thousands of Naperville residents came to my show...it became a HUGE Halloween family tradition! ... I would love to get something into or on Positively Naperville's Web site about Ghost Stories which runs the first two weekends of October (See Editor's Note below.). ...Also, I did notice that the auditions (now Theater Beat) link needs to be updated (at www.positivelynaperville.com). ; It's on a different site now, and the URL has changed. Nice (EAB) Web page! Great information and links. What a good use of your publication for everyone!
—Jini Clare
Editor's Note: In an effort to help save our ashes, trees native to Illinois oftentimes found along parkways and boulevards, PN has put together a page about the Emerald Ash Borer.
I especially enjoyed this copy (September 2010 issue of PN), since it seems as though the photographs that were in color were much more vivid than I remembered from previous issues. Congratulations, too, on the ninth anniversary of PN. ... One final note....don't let Ed kid you. He might like for his readers to think he's a curmudgeon, but I know better! Deep inside that attractive exterior is an even more beautiful person with a heart as big as all outdoors.

I saw on Google Street View that the house next to the one I grew up in on Sunset Dr. was torn down and being turned into a "McMansion". I would really appreciate anyone who could email me a current picture of the house my father had built at 614 Sunset Drive. ... I was a little less than a model citizen when I lived in Naperville, but I have fond memories or growing up there.

Having practiced Optometry in the Naperville area for 20 years, it was crucial to promote the opening of my new office in Naperville in October, 2010. After trying multiple media outlets to advertise in without much success, we turned to Positively Naperville. With the first issue, our phones started ringing, and the response has been impressive. Not only do I continue to advertise in PN, I have recommended it to colleagues who have done the same. The support we have received from this community-oriented local publication is extraordinary. ... Thank you again!
—Allan Smith, English Rows Eye Care
To Columnist Ed Channell...Hunter showed me your recent article in the PN newspaper. I had always wondered what guys talk about in the men's room, so thank you for enlightening us. I think your "response" to the fellow who was criticizing you was very appropriate and a good southern come back. (If you've never heard the story behind the southern lady who always said "How nice," let me know and I'll tell you about it sometime.)
—Barbara Byington
I am seeking a copy of the NCHS arrowhead for the years of 1952 through 1956. If you know of any please let me know. ... Thanks.

To Columnist Ed Channell... Just finished reading your latest contribution to PN (Sept. 2010). I really enjoy your humor since it always seems to hit just when I least expect it. Now I know what might be coming but there's forever a Channell twist that makes me chuckle. I love knowing that you're forever in trouble, but usually figure out a way that makes it humorous. I never miss reading your column. I told this to Kathy at the Wentz Fine Arts Center several weeks (months?) ago and she told me you would like to hear from me, but I couldn't believe she really knew you wanted that kind of interruption. After reading today, I guess you do! Keep pushing that pen!! Or should I say brain? Whatever, keep it coming! ... I'll let Stephanie know my thoughts.

Reading about the Kennedy Jr. High student, Brian Crotty, who is collecting T-shirts for the Chicago Homeless Sandwich Run touched my heart. I have 2 grown sons (in their 20's) and they both have a closet full of clothes at our house, and they both have moved on to their own homes. When David was here yesterday, I asked him about all the clothes in his closet, and he said he doesn't have room for more stuff at his place (he just got married in July). I told him maybe they could go to someone who could use them. He thought that most of the clothes could go to a worthy cause. BINGO! Today, I read about Brian's cause. So, there will be a lot of men's T-shirts and sweatshirts going out of our house soon!
Thank you, Positively Naperville.
—Melinda Buehring
Editor's Note: Gently used T-shirts and sweatshirts in sizes Large, X-Large and up as well as men's socks are being collected on weekdays by Brian Cotty via a big box located in the lobby of the Naperville Township Building until Oct. 15. The collection will be given to the Chicago Homeless Sandwich Run.
I just wanted to thank you for the great story and pictures in this month’s (September 2010) PN. Sister Jeanne will love it!

I thoroughly enjoyed Ed Channell's "Positive non-( )itchy" article in today's Positively Naperville edition.
—Mike Phillips
PS----I am a big Fan.
Nine years already, where does the time go? You've done a great job and Naperville thanks you. ...
I also want to thank you for including Half Way to St. Pat's in the calendar. Please mark yours and join us. All the best, pop the champagne...

After reading the PN (which I really enjoy and read cover to cover) I got to the Naperville Nostalgia and I have scanned you pic of an OLD BARN that was standing on a farm at Wehril and 77th, I live east off of 77th. ... I was a Barn collector (old) and took this picture in 1997 before it was leveled for the housing subdivision that is up there now.

To Columnist Ed Channell... I've been meaning to write you for some time telling you how much I enjoy your columns. My late wife, "The lovely Elaine," as I referred to her on my radio and TV shows, bought the home I live in her in Naperville 49 years ago, and we raised our 5 wonderful children here. I recently published my book, "The Hellyer Say," the story of my family, my 55 years on radio TV, including interviewing Harry Truman in his home, working White Sox games where I interviewed Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Yogi Berra and so many others. Pulitzer Prize winning author Studs Terkel read the advance of my book shortly before his death and gave it a great review. I'd like to bring you a copy of it. Some great reviews are on Amazon.com and other places, too... For the good times.
—Art Hellyer
Ed Channell's response to Hellyer: Thanks for your kind words. As you know, as a writer, you always wonder if anyone is reading your stuff. Does Anderson's Bookshop carry your book? I would like to read it. I've lived in Naperville since 1960 and love the city dearly. Of all the publications in town I think PN reveals the real Naperville and it's people. Hope to meet you as I wander around town.
Please send me a jpg of the photos on Positively Naperville Sept issue pg, 19. I'm the Naper Band cornet player in Michigan garb. ... I'd also like to pass this along to the U Mich alumni magazine. ... And best wishes for the continuing good work with Positively Napeville. ... Thanx!
—Jerry Lahti
Editor's Note: During the final concert of the summer season, the Naperville Municipal Band performed "Council's Choice," a selection of songs by the Naperville City Council. Councilman Grant Wehrli's choice was 'The Victors," the Michigan Fight Song and band member Jerry Lahti, also a U of M alum, tooted his horn for it. Fortunately PN was standing near the councilman who recognized the t-shirted musician when he stood up. What a great way to end the summer season!
To Columnist Ed Channell... OK, you got me! This will probably one of many email responses you get to your most recent PN column, because you begged! Actually, every month Positively Naperville arrives in my driveway, I bring it in and put it on the floor next to the couch (the spot where I put the Naperville Sun, until I read it). And PN stays there for a few days, then I decide I'm not going to read it and think about putting it in the recycling container. But, every time, I pick it up and read it. And I always get something out of it, and I'm glad I read it. So, sorry you haven't been getting any response from us readers to your column. OK, so I am married to a grumpy man, so grumpiness is NOT something I need more of. In fact, I need less of it!! So, if you count your blessings and stop complaining, maybe you could teach other grumps to do the same!!
Thank you, Ed,

I have many memories as I lived in Naperville from 1947 until went off to NIU in 1964 returned for awhile then off to U of I in 1970 recall the Spinner Brother Store where Starbuck's is my brother went to high school with Ron Keller; I was a pinboy under Bill Feldott at Sports Bowl and am writing a book of the era. ... I am interested in any Naperville Photos taken of events and people from 1947 thru 1980.
I live in...Carrollton, GA, ironically or maybe not about the size of Naperville when I left ( 24K give or take). I have been attempting to locate a copy of Wehrli's book on the sesqecentenial from 1981. ... Thought maybe some pics there— also have left word with the Settlement. I understand they have a photo collection, but I am looking more for day-to-day snapshots of life during that time. Almost need to invade attics LOL. Thanks for any help.
