Thoughts for the day & week!
Greetings from Our Readers / Year 11 / 2011-12
Mark Twain was correct when he noted,
"He was as shy as a newspaper is when
referring to its own merits."

That's why we appreciate what our readers are saying about Positively Naperville and what they want to share with other readers!

The most recent greetings are posted first.

Please scroll down for all of this year's comments that begin with the September  2011 birthday issue, tied to the Jaycees Last Fling, the all-community event that helped us launch the publication in 2001.

Thanks to all for sending your comments over the years and for contributing to our adventurous experience!

Here's what our readers are saying about Positively Naperville and a few other things that come to mind...
(Edited for space, of course!)

Readers who enjoy this page of greetings also might like the memories featured on PN's Naperville Nostalgia.

Thank you so much for sending Tim Perroud to cover the NWC check presentation yesterday. All of us at NWC, Loaves & Fishes, and Families Helping Families appreciate the coverage. ... I noticed you posted the photo and a few lines on Facebook a little while ago. May I download the photo to use, properly crediting Positively Naperville and Tim, for our Constant Contact e-mail going out tomorrow? I did share it on my personal FB page, attributing it in my second comment. I hope this was ok. I will not share via L&F without permission. We appreciate your support!

First, thank you for recognizing our assistance in last issue of PN (Bev Frier’s inquiry about the Beckman horse trough/White Fountain).  The collection at NHS often gets overlooked. ... Second, Don McCabe is looking for photo ID for a couple of images he has. (See Naperville Nostalgia)  Could you see if any of your readers could ID?  The images are not the best quality  - I can see if we have similar in the collection to scan at a printable resolution – if you think that will help. ... Thanks.

Copied to PN upon hearing news that Police Chief David Dial will retire in May 2012:
Dear Chief Dial,

Happy Retirement!   While we are happy for you we are sad to see you go!  We, at Operation Welcome You Home, would like to thank you for supporting our missions in Naperville.  You were always right there when we needed a police escort to welcome home, sendoff our military heroes who served in the sandbox.  Sadly there were several who paid the ultimate sacrifice in Naperville and again you and your force where there when needed.

There are not enough words or time to express the value you have brought to the Naperville community. Thank you and enjoy your retirement.
—Donna Morsovillo, Founder, Operation Welcome You Home

Donna, thank you very much. I realize that there will always be a need for the men and women in our armed forces to serve abroad and I have now lived long enough to understand that the only peace any of us will truly have is peace of mind that comes from helping others.  The members and supporters of “Operation Welcome You Home” can enjoy that peace from the valuable service they provide.
—David E. Dial, Chief of Police, Naperville Police Department

I wanted to take a minute to let you know how much I enjoyed  Ed Channell’s article “Advice to a Teen.”  The article made me think back about my days as a teenager and how much things have changed over the years. As I reflected back, the problems and situations I encountered  as a teen almost seem comical. It made me realize to not take life too seriously.  Thanks, Ed, for a great article.

To Naperville Nostalgia: I remember coming to Naperville from Green Bay, Wisconsin, with the swim team to compete against the Naperville team. One of the members of the Naperville team was Carol Lynn Schuler. Imagine my surprise when I arrived at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and found Carol Lynn. We became fast friends and continued our friendship as young marrieds at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. After graduate school we lost touch. If anyone in Naperville knows Carol Lynn (Armstrong) (Leander), please let her know that Bobbi would like to reconnect. Thank you. I know she had a brother James (Jimmie).

December 2011 - Find the month's most recent greetings at the top.

We can't even begin to tell you how much we appreciate your support.  So whether you came to 1, 2 or ALL 3 of our Christmas Cheer Events... THANK YOU, THANK YOU...  We had so much fun with singing, spreading Christmas Cheer, giving Santa and Elf hats, passing out filled stockings and just hanging out with everyone.  We especially love the crazy singing.  Good times were had by ALL. Just look at the pictures on the Web site... Without ALL of you none of this would have been possible.  Spreading cheer to our Military Heroes from all walks of life was the highlight of our holidays in 2011.
...Safe and Healthy New Year to ALL!!!!
—Judi Stapleton, Asst. Coordinator
—Donna Morsovillo, Founder, Operation Welcome You Home, www.welcomeyouhome.org/

Just to let you know, we have been having a lot of fun sharing the paper with friends and relatives with the Ho Ho tree (The "H" is a River birch in the front yard of Paul Junkroski, Sr.) on the front page (December 2011)!  ... We also got a hoot out of Tep’s recipe for Eggnog – whew!
—Mary Ann Junkroski, Roseland Draperies & Interiors
Editor's Note: Paul Junkroski, Sr., is Mary Ann Junkroski's father-in-law and longtime friend of this publisher. During deliveries all around town as folks were shown the front page of the December issue, PN has discovered that nearly 100 percent of the women instantly read the "J O.Y"  and "H o Ho Ho" in the trees compared to 50 percent of men.  Perhaps men think it's a trick question when asked, "What do the letters spell?"  Thanks for reading.

TO NAPERVILLE NOSTALGIA: The oldest Candy store I can recall was in the 1941 to 1944 era as I was in about 2nd grade at Naper School.  The penny candy store and ice cream parlor was Charlie Latchaws (SP?), next to the old fire station across from the feed store and the Chinese laundry.  We used to go to Kerns Feed store every spring and watch the racks of baby chicks.
—Ken Bauder

Enjoyed your article on trees (Cover story / December 2011). ,,, When taking the “woodies” class at College of DuPage, we were told that we would be able to identify trees without leaves simply from bark and branching patterns.
—Ron Ory

Loved your article (December 2011) that highlighted the incredible service accomplished by our 20 local teens.  These young people represent our community’s greatest hope and richest resource – and Positively Naperville consistently heralds the good news about our youth.  It is so inspiring to read Positively Naperville’s monthly accounts that truly support the fact that our children and teens are our future leaders – and that, in many cases, such as the Youth Service Award Recipients, they are leading us now.

Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry counts you among our many blessings during this Thanksgiving season. Just last week, we had the privilege of serving a record 764 families, connecting them with food and empowerment programs. Today, another 186 families reached out for help, and we expect to see many more tomorrow.

We are thankful for the construction of this new facility, which has greatly enhanced our ability to serve Naperville and DuPage County families. ... As you give thanks for your blessings, think about sharing them with others. That is the true power of community. Please accept our thanks and best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving.

Many exciting things coming up for us including this concert in February, Pitt Men's GC in March, Dong Fang Dancers in May.  And for our 25th Anniversary (2013) we will be part of a concert on Presidents Day at Kennedy Center commemorating the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination.  I've also been asked to speak at a symposium on Choirs Transforming the World at Yale University this June.  You are a part of all we do and we are so grateful to you.
—Bonnie Klee Roberts, Conductor, The Naperville Men's Glee Club

Thank you to the 1,500 wonderful people who on November 5 made a statement about homelessness by sleeping out in tents, boxes and cars to raise awareness of the growing problem of homeless families. Sleep Out Saturday is sponsored by Bridge Communities, the largest provider of transitional housing in DuPage County, serving 100 families each year.

People from faith-based, community, corporate and family groups braved a cold night and experienced homelessness firsthand.  I huddled in my sleeping bag inside the car, along with my daughter and my granddaughter.  Olivia is just 8 years old, the average age of a homeless person in DuPage County.  If that doesn’t shock us, nothing will.

As most people were enjoying an extra hour in bed, we couldn’t wait for morning to come so we could get out of the car and go back to our warm homes.  For me and my family and our 1500 fellow “sleepers,” it was over.  Not so for the real homeless.  No welcoming friends inside the home where we parked our car that night.  No pot of hot coffee and warm breakfast breads.  Just another cold day waiting for the next homeless shelter to open, another night in the car or if lucky enough, a night in a cheap motel room.

At this time of Thanksgiving, Bridge Communities is so thankful of all those who took part in Sleep Out Saturday, all the generous corporate sponsors and the kindness and generosity of the donors who supported their friends and loved ones as we slept outside last weekend.   Our theme this year was “Make a Change.”   Mother Teresa said “Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.”  Last weekend, 1,500 people took responsibility for the homeless, and for one night, we were the change.  Thank you again!

My December column for Positively Naperville will be my 84th attempt (7 yrs).  The column is called "Ed's Many Hats" and I'm pretty proud of them. Some of them are actually pretty amusing. I've asked Ray Kinney (Minuteman Press) to copy and put them in a nice book type binder.  If you would like one let me know.  They should be ready the first week of December. Find this month's copy at www.pnmonthly.com.  See page 24.
—Ed Channell, echannell@aol.com

Thanks ... for that wonderful article you wrote about Tracy's 80th in the Oct. issue of PN. ...  Keep up the good work.
—Mary and Dick Locher

In the November Issue of “Positively Naperville” there was an article and photo of “What We Need” tribute along the Riverwalk. (page 30). ... There is another tribute (near Fredenhagen Park) to “The good life seven men found when they Transplanted to Naperville from other cities and towns”. Thus, the name for this whole area of the Riverwalk is called “Transplant Grove.” It is a grove of 7 trees and a small Plaque located at the East end of the Moser bridge. In case you don’t know:  the Moser bridge crosses the West Branch near Burger King.  ...   Always thinking of “Positively Naperville.”
—Roy Grundy

Thank you so much for the great exposure for our Cookie Walk (Dec. 3) coming up in about 4 weeks. Last Wednesday someone brought the Cookie Walk article you wrote to the Guild meeting. Great pictures, nice article. This morning I actually had time to sit and go through the paper and saw the article on the Buonauro Garden dedication, too. Great pictures, nice article. I am writing to let you know about an exciting photo opportunity on Monday evening Oct. 24. The SS. Peter and Paul 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams will face off in matches to benefit WDSRA. During the interim between the 7th and 8th grade games, a WDSRA bocce player will talk about experiences competing on behalf of WDSRA, students will have the chance to try a hand at bocce, and a WDSRA volunteer and SS. Kudos to you for your excellent coverage of Public Safety Month in October’s Positively Naperville.   You also acknowledged in your editorial that Positively Naperville “…might create a 'LOL' as we compete with the Internet and social media.”  While there certainly is a degree of competition, features such as the above, where you connect important dots such as Dick Tracy, the Naper Settlement, Dick Locher and Mary Locher, Century Walk and the Police and Fire Departments to the focus of the story, blows it all away.  In reality, there is no competition to your positive information for our community, provided free every month.  Thank you for staying in there for ten years and don’t underestimate the value of what you provide us.
—Brand Bobosky

Nancy Wiersum contacted PN about a recent seminar where she met Justice Sandra Day O'Conner. Here is the website for Sandra Day O’Connor’s initiative to teach children about government: www.iCivics.org. I played a couple of the games and they are adorable. Check out Immigration Nation…..too cute – what a great way to teach the kids about how their country works. Justice O’Connor was very inspiring and she is 81!

As hard as it may be to believe, I am truly lost for words. (Those of you that know me well, know that's unusual!)  This afternoon's show (Oct. 2) was fantastic!  A true blessing for me, but most importantly, a blessing to over 800 senior citizens of our area.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!  If you are receiving this and know of anyone who contributed and is not on the distribution, please pass this on.

After twelve years, it is amazing to me to see the growth and support that Singing for Seniors has experienced.  Each and every one of you contributed in a special way -  big or small, we could not pull it off without such help and we are so appreciative of every part you played.

We have gotten many positive comments on the questionnaire cards, but they can be summed up by one that said:  "What a fabulous way to spend a Sunday afternoon - as always, top notch."  Yes, indeed, you are all top notch and just know that thought this is but a brief note, it is FULL of great sentiment and gratitude. See you next year.
—Gary Leavenworth, Executive Producer/CEO, Singing for Seniors

—Dan Casey, Casey's Foods

My predecessor in this role at Rosecrance, Susan Rice, said you are the #1 person who needs to know about our upcoming event, Cooking Up Hope, which is set for noon, Oct. 2, at Naperville Country Club. ... This is the second year for this chef’s tasting to benefit teens who need addiction treatment at Rosecrance. This event is a benefit hosted by The Rosecrance Foundation Chicago Board, which has numerous members who live in the western suburbs.  Dave “Kap” Kaplan, longtime sports personality in Chicago, is on our Foundation Board, and he is emcee for this event.  ...Our chefs are from Ivy, Vie, SugarToad, Tasso’s, Kuma’s, Hugo’s, Labriola and numerous other restaurants and Casey's Foods. Some of our chefs have won many local, national and even international awards. This event is a lot of fun and our goal is to raise $75,000 for charity care. We likely will do that.

They caught former residents, Trudy & Irwin Berg, reading PN!
My wife & I just returned from a visit to Chicago. Our hostess, Connie Sprovieri of Glen Ellen took us to Naperville, the former hometown of our very good friends Irwin and Trudy Berg who lived in Naperville from about 1960 to early 1980's.  The Bergs encouraged us to see Naperville on our trip and we loved it. We picked up your local newspaper as a souvenir for the Berg's. Upon reading your dare to take a photo of someone reading a paper, I thought this would be a great way for the the Berg family to say hello to all their friends back in Naperville.

Trudy & Irwin Berg have lived in Laguna Hills in Southern California since about 1980-81, but they still have friends and relatives in the area. Their kids, Carole Linda and Mike, also live in Southern California.

After reading the wonderful stories in your Naperville paper, I have a better idea as to why the Berg family are soooo nice. It's your community of hearts and minds. We were very impressed by your wonderful town and your newspaper. Positively inspirational.

Trudy & Irwin Berg are truly the nicest people we know.
—Bob & Eunice Langieri, Dana Point, CA

From Facebook Post August 31: Great issue of PN found on the doorstep today.

Just wanted to let you know. ... A woman came into the store after reading about Daisy (In the September 2011 edition). She said after reading the little column that she knew that Dog Patch is the kind of place she should shop. ... Your paper works!
