SPRINGFIELD – In the wake of the recent scandal regarding politically-motivated targeting by the Internal Revenue Service of conservative groups, State Representatives Darlene Senger (R-Naperville) and David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) have introduced a resolution condemning the IRS actions and demanding an investigation into the individuals involved in targeting specific groups and citizens .

Recent reports indicate that starting in 2010, personnel of federal IRS, including high-ranking and supervisory personnel, singled out American individuals and groups based on their apparent political leanings. These groups have been denied or delayed recognition of their nonprofit standing based upon how these groups use certain identification words favored by conservatives, including “Tea Party,” “patriot” and “9/12.”

“This is an outrageous violation of the trust that the American people have put in the federal government,” said McSweeney. “Any politically-motivated targeting of Americans by the IRS is intolerable and I expect a full investigation.”

“I think if there is something that we can all agree on here, it is that we want to find out the truth about what really happened at the IRS,” said Senger.

House Resolution 359 specifically commends the work of the United States Congress in investigating the threat to fundamental liberties and urges the White House, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, and the IRS to comply with all requests related to Congressional inquiries without any delay.

All proceeds will benefit the Jeanine Nicarico Memorial Fund for Literacy to acquire and distribute resources that provide enriched literary opportunities within the community.

“Although I’m an avid runner, I still need motivation…or a cause to run for,” noted Brad Hentz, Sourcebook’s Manager of Manufacturing and Product Delivery. “Seeing as this race is in Naperville AND is about literacy AND we are all book lovers here at Sourcebooks, it made sense.”

The race starts at 5th Ave. and Center St., heading east on 5th Ave./Plank Rd. to Tuthill Rd. Participants will turn around and head back west on Plank Rd. to 5th Ave and N.

North Central College Cornerstone Day is always celebrated on the Friday of Cornerstone Week to commemorate the arrival in 1870 of the educational institution to heart of Naperville. A year ago, Cornerstone Day also was a time to participate in the 150th-year celebration of its founding in Plainfield.

During the special occasion with hundreds of students and residents in attendance, then-President Hal Wilde and public officials from the Riverwalk Commission and the Riverwalk Foundation held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Riverwalk Gateway just across the covered bridge, adjacent to Fredenhagen Park with a clear view of Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

During North Central College Homecoming festivities in late October 2012, the Riverwalk Gateway was dedicated.

Today, Cornerstone Day again will celebrate the arrival of North Central College in Naperville on May 17, 1870. The annual picnic is slated from 11AM to 1:30PM in the new Riverwalk Gateway Park, adjacent to Fredenhagen Park in downtown Naperville. The public is invited.

The cornerstone is located on the northwest corner of Old Main. When our cameras took this shot of the cornerstone early this morning, we were mindful of remarkable growth and development of Naperville’s college since it arrived here 151 years ago.

Congratulations to all for building a fine liberal arts institution and to Dr. Troy D. Hammond on the day of his inauguration as the 10th President of North Central College.

Organized by a parade committee comprised of members of the Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873, American Legion Post 43, the Naperville Municipal Band, Naperville Police and Fire Departments and other community volunteers, the Naperville tradition attracts tens of thousands to downtown Naperville to pay tribute to every family that has sacrificed for our nation’s freedom.

To accommodate veterans groups, marching bands and other patriotic entries, a new website was launched nearly five months ago for parade registration with complete instructions, providing parade participants with pertinent information regarding the focus on veterans and military families that have given the supreme sacrifice for our nation.

Parents are reminded to tell youngsters that the Memorial Day Parade is the one without candy and hand-outs. Dress in patriotic colors, wear a red artificial Buddy Poppy and be prepared to stand, hats off, when families of the military and veterans march by parade goers.

10:30AM Memorial Day, May 27

As is tradition, beginning at 10:30AM Mon., May 27, the 2013 Memorial Day Parade officially steps off from Jackson and West St., heads east to Washington, north to Benton, and east to Ss. Peter and Paul parking lot. Parade participants are welcome to attend the observance that follows in Central Park.

Musical Tribute & Wreath Laying in Central Park

Immediately following the conclusion of the colorful and spirited parade just after noon, an observance with patriotic messages from guest speakers with musical tributes performed by the Naperville Municipal Band again will be held in Central Park at the Community Concert Center.

This year the Young Naperville Singers will add their lovely voices to the inspirational program dedicated to remembering, expressing gratitude and honoring our nation’s fallen heroes. The annual observance in Central Park runs 30 to 45 minutes.

Other observances are scheduled before the parade at local cemeteries and monuments as well as after the observance in Central Park, too.

The re-opening of Kreger’s (rhymes with beggars) Grocery as “Kreger’s Brat and Sausage Haus,” still located at 6th Street at Ellsworth just a block north of Fifth Avenue Station, is now history. A step inside will bring back a rush of memories that independent and locally-owned businesses throughout Naperville have just what your need to balance your shopping and dining patterns as well as your bank statement.

“We were very, very busy for lunch today,” said Bill Kreger, pictured here with Sue Kreger and Sarah Lesiecki. “We sold out of buns and had to make more brats. It’s been a very good, good day.”

Locally-owned enterprises make a big difference to Naperville’s charm, culture and character every day of the year. Keeping positive experiences at shops and restaurants, banks and home decorating services a secret is the best way to watch them go out of business. So spread the word that independents such as Kreger’s are open for business!

First established in 1893, Kreger’s now will be open three days a week: 9AM-6PM on Thursday and Friday and 8AM-5PM on Saturday. Kreger’s Brat & Sausage Haus will continue its more than 60-year tradition of making handmade famous bratwurst and sausages.

“I’ll be there for lunch on Friday,” said Pat Benton, President of First Community Bank Naperville, earlier in the week.

Another independent businessman and longtime Napervillian, Tony Chirico of AG Real Estate Investors, is joining Benton in support of the re-opening.

“Pat came up with the idea and I thought it was a great one to go welcome back a family business and a Naperville institution,” said Chirico on Thursday. “I just returned from Italy where I experienced many longtime traditions. It’s good and important to keep small independents going—even if it’s German sausage,” he joked.

Independent Culture

What’s more, many owners of small businesses actively are involved in the community—they’re the ones who frequently serve on local boards, foundations and commissions. Many of them are the heartbeat of the community from one neighbor to the next.

Plus, local business owners are more likely to know your name with a warm welcome. They aim to provide quality services so you’ll keep coming back.

Whenever possible, find the balance between big box bargains and small business special services such as pet supplies, real estate agents, property owners and developers, printers, car dealers, custom framing, plumbers, fresh meats and produce, bankers and entertainment.

Small businesses are the leading job creators.

But mostly, support your local community as a way to support your quality of life at every level.

Your spending habits have an impact on Naperville’s workforce and local tax revenues that fund snow removal, filling potholes, leaf and trash collection and public safety.

Educate your family, especially young people, about the importance of supporting local businesses first before shopping online.

Here’s a sampling of what happens when you shop locally and support independent businesses…

1. You keep dollars in the local economy. According to info promoting self-reliance via ”shop local campaigns” and other messaging, for every $100 you spend at one of our local brick-and-mortar businesses, $68 will stay in the community. When you spend that same $100 at a national chain, $43 stays in the community.

2. You embrace what makes this city different from others. Since you wouldn’t want your house to look like every other one in the nation, why would you want your community to be a cookie cutter image?

3. You help create local jobs. Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for our neighbors.

4. You help the environment. Buying from a local business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation, less packaging, and products that you know are safe and well made, because we stand behind them.

5. You nurture community spirit. We know you, and you know us. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains.

6. You conserve your tax dollars. Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify our community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong—right here in your community!

7. You create more choice. We pick the items we sell based on what we know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because we buy for our own individual market.

8. You take advantage of independent expertise. You are our friends and neighbors, and we have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. We’re passionate about what we do. Why not take advantage of it?

9. You invest in entrepreneurship. Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community.

10. You help make Naperville a destination from downtown Naperville to CityGate Centre to Naperville Plaza to Naperville Crossings to Freedom Commons and all the shopping centers N.E.W. S. The more interesting and unique we are as a community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

—The Ten Points were inspired by the American Booksellers Association/IndieBound.org where Becky Anderson of the award-winning Anderson’s Bookshop serves as ABA President until May 30, 2013. In 2008, Anderson united other independent businesses to found IndieBound Naperville, an eclectic group of independent business owners with passions to serve the local economy.

Most recent greeting posted at top. Many Greetings to PN also are linked to online stories. Thanks for keeping greetings brief.

Regarding PN Links: I am especially anxious to adopt “Let me think about it” as I prepare to go to church to sew dresses for little girls in Africa (as the weeds take over my yard, vacation “things” are stacked all over, we still have not put stuff back in place in our basement and…). … Your Tim West article was great. I love that he said you couldn’t be friends any more when he saw PN. I will miss reading his article each week. —Nancy Davis

Hello Naper Settlement and Positively Naperville: I am writing to let you know how much I appreciate the new Wednesday Walking Club. I look forward to this FREE walking program each Wednesday. I check-in at 8AM at Naper Settlement and walk for 60 minutes around Naper Settlement and / or the Riverwalk. For each 200 minutes of walking I receive a prize of free admission to a Naper Settlement event of my choice. I have loved watching spring unfold. Although Naper Settlement does not allow dogs on the grounds, Lately, I’ve checked in at Naper Settlement and walked my dog on the Riverwalk during Wednesday Walking Club. The complimentary snacks provided at the end of each walk are a nice treat too. It is a wonderful way to start the day. Thank you, Naper Settlement! —Jan Wishau, Loomis Street, Naperville

Memorial Day Parade: Please Join Us on Sat. May 27, in the Naperville Memorial Day Parade! We are looking for 100 American Flag Carriers. First we will line the parade route holding flags! Then as the Operations Support Our Troops – America Float passes, we will join in behind them – showing our Patriotism and Support of our Military, as well as helping out another Parade. … The flag street lining and parading has been done in several Naperville Parades and is becoming one of the top appreciated entries! As you pass spectators you’ll see the Proud Patriotism of Naperville! You’ll definitely feel good about your town, country, military and your participation! —Marty Walker (mwalker243@yahoo.com) or Fred McEwen (fcmjr@comcast.net)

Naperville Men’s Glee Club: Thanks for all the coverage and nice ad placement for Voices of Hope. It was a very special performance for us and, I think, for the community as well. We will probably do some sort of follow-up with that project. Thanks! —Bonnie Klee Roberts, Conductor, The Naperville Men’s Glee Club

Illinois State Legislature: As I write this (May 10, 2013), the state of Illinois is paying employees to stay home. It’s wrong, it’s wasteful and it’s a problem I am working to fix.

A recent media report revealed that since 2007, more than 2,000 employees have been on state-authorized paid administrative leave and collected $23 million in taxpayer-funded wages. It’s a jaw-dropping number and the reason I am supporting a measure to shine a bright light on this pervasive problem.

With House Resolution 308, we are putting our foot down. This resolution can help increase scrutiny toward the broken paid leave system and protect taxpayer dollars.

We shouldn’t stop there. I have introduced bills to end pay for part-time boards and commissions and prevent stipends from being applied to board and commission pensions. I also rejected a legislative pension and voted to cut lawmakers’ pay.

I will continue fighting to reduce waste, get Illinois back on the right track and keep corruption out of our government. —Stephanie Kifowit, State Representative, 84th District

Thoughts of Naperville: Was thinking… How about your writing a book in the realm of volunteerism. The gal (?) who wrote the book, “Lean-In,” took the business approach. Someone like you could write a book on those women (maybe men too) who volunteer so unselfishly for many better reasons. Again this is Naperville. We need to keep this culture going to influence those up-and-comers. We have what we have because so many citizens care about each other and our town. … I like “Kindness in Naperville.” It’s a quick catchy slogan the city could use in another city wide campaign that would have use in so many aspects where Kindness applies. How about using those street pole banners? Maybe the city could post the theme on them.

Thanks for your funnies (Gender Chuckles), but more importantly your consistent efforts for our town! I love Naperville. —John Harvard

Thanks! Thanks for the positive plug for Hopping for Hope at Airtastic Play Land. —Jacque Haas LeBreck

Thanks! Thanks Positively Naperville for a positively excellent article about the Derby event! —Ray Kinney

NaperBridge, in partnership with the Naperville Park District, presents “Your Summer to Connect,” a trio of events for Naperville high school students. The events take place once a month throughout the summer of 2013.

On June 4 students can attend a battle of student DJ’s at “Battle of the Bass.” On July 16 popular high school band, Bro Spice, takes the stage for a concert. On August 13 there will be a Comedy Cage Match, improv comedy show. All events will be held at the Park District’s Barn Recreation Center located at 421 W. Martin Ave.

Students can also win prizes by participating in an Instagram contest throughout the summer. Using the hashtag #naperbridge students snap photos of how they are spending their summer around Naperville and post them on their Instagram feeds.

At the end of each week a winner will be announced and a prize awarded. The events are a safe place for teens to connect with Naperville and each other during the summer. The goal of NaperBridge is to facilitate positive and fun events so that students can have a worry free, good time with friends and peers.

NaperBridge Executive Director, Andy Jack, credits the NaperBridge Student Advisory Board for the summer programming. “Our teens have done an inspiring job of taking this summer’s programming from the brainstorming phase all the way to lining up the talent and promoting ticket sales. What makes these events so unique is that they are created by teens for teens!”

Tickets for the events will be available at the Park District office (320 W. Jackson) or NaperBridge website. Tickets are $3 when purchased before the event or $5 at the door. Limited tickets are available.

According to the Chamber’s news release, its Lifetime Achievement Award is typically presented to a business and civic leader for commitment to Naperville’s business community, excellence in business stewardship, contributions to the region’s quality of life, and leadership in support of economic progress.

“Tim West exceeds the mark in every category,” wrote John Schmitt, President and CEO of the Chamber, in the recent Current.

Longtime residents know that Tim has been working at the Naperville Sun since 1973. Some residents will tell you how he grew up when he met Kathy, the woman who became his wife. Many residents have followed his stories about Job, his cat. And they’ve followed Tim to Rolling Stone concerts, the ballet and back to his hometown in Ohio. Residents feel as though they know Tim West, so many don’t mind disagreeing with him when he takes a stand.

During his time at the Naperville Sun, Tim has been reporter, photographer, associate editor, managing editor and viewpoint editor—a post he fills today, noted Schmitt. Over the years, his work and dedication to journalism have been recognized with numerous statewide and professional awards. When he accepts this most recent award, folks in attendance likely will see a modest man with a subtle sense of humor recount some memorable moments from his career here.

What folks in attendance won’t learn is that this year’s choice for lifetime of achievement has been considered a friend of PN’s publisher since they first met at weekly meetings of the Rotary Club of Naperville in 1996.

PN will always remember Tim’s reaction when he picked up the first September issue of the new monthly publication at a Rotary Club meeting one Thursday in 2001. “What’s this?” he asked PN’s publisher. And he added, “I guess we can’t be friends anymore.”

Tim West

Yet he ate his words many times over lunch, mainly at Rotary meetings at Cress Creek Country Club, Outback Steakhouse and Key Wester. Tim provided sage advice in support of the complimentary community newspaper with an independent niche, including appreciated constructive criticism when too many photos of any particular person appeared in the same issue.

Over the years PN’s camera has captured volunteer Tim’s lending a hand in service during Rotary’s Oktoberfest and judging ribs at Exchange Club’s Ribfest or the Jaycees Last Fling.

PN also caught Tim reading a copy of the paper during the first anniversary celebration of the First Community Bank Naperville.

He’s also a self-proclaimed curmudgeon who many folks know has a big heart.

For nearly 40 years, his coverage, columns and opinions have offered insights and ideas as he’s shared his thoughts on public policy, growth and development as well as his disposition. He oftentimes has been spotted sitting in City Council Chambers during City Council meetings. His familiar face is recognized by business leaders and residents when he shows up at events.

And last summer, Tim’s likeness as an old-fashioned newspaper boy was painted on the Century Walk mural, “Naperville Loves a Parade,” along Rubins Way in downtown Naperville.

Congratulations, Tim West. You’re best known for your place in the Sun.

Edward Hospital & Health Services and Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare are another step closer to a merger today after the state agency that regulates healthcare expansion voted unanimously to approve the merger transaction.

Edward Hospital and Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare will be under an umbrella not-for-profit system overseen by a 13-member community Board of Trustees, eight initially appointed by Edward and five appointed by Elmhurst Memorial. Edward CEO Pam Davis will be CEO of the new system while Edward’s Vince Pryor will be Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer.

The name under which the new system will be known and marketed will be determined in the months after the closing.

The merger is scheduled to be finalized July 1 creating one of the larger integrated health systems and one of the larger employers in the state. The merger will consist of a three-hospital health system – Edward, Elmhurst Memorial and Linden Oaks at Edward – with revenues of more than $1 billion and more than 50 locations across a service area of 1.7 million residents. The system would employ nearly 7,700 and have more than 1,680 physicians on staff.

The City of Naperville’s annual curbside bulk brush collection program begins the week of May 19. This program is an opportunity to dispose of large quantities of unbundled branches and tree trimmings at no cost.

The City is divided into four collection districts corresponding to the weekly curbside garbage collection schedule. Each district collection takes one full week to complete. The schedule for May/June 2013 is below:

Brush must be placed on the parkway the Sunday before collection begins in each area. Brush collection crews will make only one pass through each neighborhood. Brush put out after the crews have passed will not be collected.

Residents will once again be able to view the City’s interactive bulk brush collection map at www.naperville.il.us/brushcollection.aspx to track collection progress in their neighborhoods. The map will be updated daily and allows users to zoom in on an area of interest and see detail on the streets where collection has been completed, is in progress or has yet to begin.

Brush must be properly prepared for collection and meet the following specifications:

Branches must measure between three and eight feet in length and be no greater than six inches in diameter. Shorter lengths may be bagged or bundled and placed out on garbage day with a yard waste sticker attached.

Branches should be stacked neatly on the parkway in front of a home with cut ends facing the street. Brush piles that are badly tangled will not be collected. Branches with thorns should be placed in a separate pile.

Brush will only be collected from the front of each residence, not from rear or side yards.

Brush piles must not be tied or bundled.

Willow whips, vines and shorter branches must be bundled or bagged in paper yard waste bags with a yard waste sticker affixed for collection on a resident’s regular garbage collection day.

Brush that is tangled, tied or contains nails, metal, stones, vines, willow whips, root balls, stumps, plant material or lumber will not be collected. If brush contains anything other than branches, it will not be collected.

Tree trunks, roots, root balls and logs are also not accepted but may be disposed of with regular garbage according to City regulations. Please note that there is a 32-gallon can and 60-pound weight limit.

A tag will be affixed to any brush pile that is not picked up explaining why it was not collected. From now through December 13, residents may also dispose of bagged or bundled brush each week through the City’s yard waste collection program. More information can be found at www.naperville.il.us/yardwaste.aspx.

For the fifth year, the Step Up for Autism Walk and Fun Run will take place along the award-winning Riverwalk in downtown Naperville. The event is slated for Sunday morning, June 23 near the Grand Pavilion in the wide open field.

Registration starts at 8:30AM and the Walk kicks-off at 10AM. The family-friendly event is a fun and educational way to heighten awareness about autism spectrum disorders, attracting crowds of 2,000-plus people.

Geared toward families and friends of all ages, a young kids area will be packed with activities and a resource fair will feature therapy horses and dogs. Thanks to generous sponsors 95.9 The River and their very own Danielle Tufano and The River Road Crew, music and live entertainment will be on tap, too.

In 2012, the Naperville North High School Huskies stepped up to cheer for Little Friends. Folks from the Y and other youngsters from the School of Performing Arts lent their talents to the event, too.

Sponsorship and volunteer opportunities remain available. The entire community is invited; individuals, families, businesses and corporate teams are all welcome.

Governor Pat Quinn announced on May 11 the awarding of $15.3 million for the FY 2013 Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grants, which included a $400,000 grant for the Naperville Park District for a nature center and improvements at Knoch Knolls Park.

“This grant will help fund the development of the District’s first staffed nature center at 224-acre Knoch Knolls Park, which is our largest and most diverse natural area,” said Executive Director Ray McGury. Director McGury attended the Governor’s press conference in Oak Park on May 11.

In a May 11 press release issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Governor Quinn commented, “Whether you are in a big city or small town, local parks let families across Illinois enjoy nature and spend time together. These projects improve parks throughout the state and expand green space in dozens of communities, creating jobs and making our state a better place to live and work.”

The Naperville Park District began the design of the future nature center in 2012 and was awarded a High Performance Green Building grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation for LEED Platinum building design of the building. Sustainable features will include photovoltaic panels to provide renewable energy, a partial green roof, a visible cistern that will reuse rainwater, and a highly efficient HVAC system.

One of the unique features of Knoch Knolls Park is the confluence of the East and West Branches of the DuPage River. The nature center will be situated overlooking the existing pond and the West Branch of the DuPage River, and the primary theme of its exhibits will be “Celebrating Water.”

In addition to the nature center, the OSLAD project at Knoch Knolls will include expanding the popular disc golf course from 9 to 18 holes, improving the canoe launch, adding multi-use trails, a nature-themed playground and a pervious paving parking lot, and restoring shoreline and prairie habitat.

The community is invited to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new project this summer. The date of the groundbreaking will be announced in the near future.

Knoch Knolls Park is located at 336 Knoch Knolls Road. Project information and conceptual plans for the nature center and other improvements may be viewed athttp://www.napervilleparks.org/parks/187-knoch-knolls.

In October 2012, the organization learned that federal funding was eliminated for its transitional housing program for homeless young women.

“The program is one of only a few in the state and the thought of closing it due to lack of funding seemed ludicrous,” said Debbie Carr, Residential Services Director for 360 Youth Services.

The agency immediately responded to the news of the funding cut with a strong advocacy initiative and a social media campaign called “A Dollar for Our Daughters.”

Board member, Nicki Anderson, spearheaded the social media campaign and helped generate over $80,000 within a few months.

“We learned just how generous people can be in a time of need. These girls needed an advocate and they got hundreds. I can’t tell you how much this meant to me to see these girls get what they deserve, a shot at a positive future,” said Anderson.

Despite the funding challenges and uncertainty, the program has received lots of attention from local community members, especially women. A group known as 100 Concerned Women in Naperville answered the call for help and raised almost $10,000 for the program as each member wrote a personal check for $100.

“Our top priority has always been keeping these young women from becoming homeless,” said Ron Hume, Executive Director for the agency.

Hume pointed out that while donations helped keep the program alive through the initial crisis, funding is still needed. The new grant is $100,000 less than the previous five-year grant.

“We will work harder than ever to make up those lost funds,” Hume added. “We know we can do it, and so does the community that helped us save this incredible program.”

In 2006, 360 Youth Services led the crusade to open the unique transitional housing program for this hugely underserved population. While programs existed in the Chicago metro area for pregnant or parenting young women from this age group, no such program existed in the area for those who were not pregnant or parenting. The program currently has a 98 percent success rate transitioning homeless young women to independence and permanent housing within 18 months.

360 Youth Services impacts 30,000 youth and their families each year through prevention education, counseling, and housing for homeless youth. For more information, visit www.360youthservices.org.

This week, the Naperville Police Department will remember those officers across the nation who have died in the line of duty, as well as recognize those officers at home who have provided exemplary service to the Naperville community.

At 9AM on Tuesday, May 14, the Peace Officers Memorial Observance will take place at the memorial wall next to the Naperville Police Department, 1350 Aurora Ave. This is an annual service to recognize and memorialize peace officers across the nation who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their duty and remember their loved ones. In the event of inclement weather, the brief ceremony will be moved to the Community Room in the Naperville Police Department.

CAPS Awards take place at Meson Sabika May 16

On Thursday, May 16, the Citizens Appreciate Public Safety (CAPS) Police Department awards dinner will take place at 6:30PM at Meson Sabika, 1025 Aurora Ave. CAPS is a community group that recognizes public safety personnel for their contributions to the City.

This year, Naperville residents were asked to nominate public safety employees who displayed an interest in residents in a manner above and beyond the call of duty and exhibited a genuine concern for the welfare and well-being of all citizens. The CAPS committee selected five award winners for this year’s Police Department event. One winner will also receive the George Pradel award, which is the top honor for police employees involved in service to the community. Police Chief Robert W. Marshall will also honor other members of the Police Department with additional awards at this dinner.

Public tickets for this family-oriented event are on sale for $20 per person and can be purchased at the Police Department or by calling Pat Mason at (630) 420-6161.

It’s Mother’s Day! Gentle breezes, sunshine and temperatures in the mid-40s attracted us to the peace and quiet of Riverwalk at 8:30AM. No matter what the season, for 20 years we’ve enjoyed exploring the linear park, a most memorable place any day of the year.

Though springtime has arrived later than usual, renewed growth now is evident and wildflowers are blooming, enhancing the winding brick path of the city’s natural treasure located along the DuPage River in the heart of downtown Naperville.

The changes in the season have produced new life again with the colors of spring, welcoming visitors to discover many priceless features, including the Dandelion Fountain in the Civic Plaza and the Moser Covered Bridge at Webster Street along Jackson Avenue.

Blankets of bluebells in Sindt Woods just east of Jefferson Avenue appeared to match the blue sky on Mother’s Day.

One thing that’s constant amid the ever-changing landscape is a stone memorial marker situated along the brick path as it leads to a dead end behind River Place. No matter what season, the stone is in clear view, positing “What We Need” in memory of Clyde “Budd” Netzley, Rufus Dirck Schumacher and Harry E. Ridley.

A recent column in the Daily Herald about the memorial stone is devoted to “What We Need” is a little more kindness. Feedback from the column resulted in numerous phone calls and e-mails this past week. Mothers and dads expressed gratitude for the message, especially the part about the unintended consequences of posting mean-spirited remarks via social media and YouTube that can leave a damaging digital footprint, whether its deleted or not.

For instance, Naperville native John Harvard sent words of encouragement to promote “Kindness in Naperville.”

“I support your writing and your reflections of Naperville in the May 6 Herald issue,” wrote Harvard. “This was and still is why I feel Naperville is such a great place. I like ‘Kindness in Naperville.’ It’s a quick catchy slogan the city could use in another city wide campaign that would have use in so many aspects where Kindness applies. How about using those street pole banners? Maybe the city could post the theme on them.”

Barb Dwyer who had contributed to the Kindness in Naperville, a.k.a. KIN, movement several years ago has since moved to Tennessee.

Dwyer, a mother and grandmother, e-mailed here thoughts to build upon an idea that the “What We Need” is to visit the stone marker, an appropriate destination for a class field trip along the Riverwalk.

“(A visit to What We Need) would be a great assignment,” Dwyer wrote. “Every student could be assigned to go to the stone and create a brass rubbing kind of paper and present it to class. Proof they were there. They would then choose one line of the poem and write 100 words about what that line means to them.”

Dwyer, a former Naperville resident and longtime supporter of the Riverwalk, added, “One more way the Riverwalk touches lives in natural and aesthetic ways.”

Mother’s Day 2013

Early this morning as Big Joe, the largest bell in the 72-bell Millennium Carillon, rang out the 9 o’clock hour from the Moser Tower, one deep resonating gong at a time, we were mindful of uncertainty and challenges that oftentimes have kept us and other mothers awake during the night. Our thoughts wrapped around the poetic words of John Donne (1572-1631). Among his many works, the English poet wrote Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions, Meditation XVII: Nunc Lento Sonitu Dicunt, Morieris.

“No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were: any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.”

Donne’s notable passage can be interpreted in many ways, but we’ve always thought of it as a reflection of our spiritual and social inter-connectivity, a theme that surrounds everyone who visits Rotary Hill where the community obviously has come together to create an inspiring amenity to share right in heart of Naperville.

Built brick by brick, one step at a time since 1981, the Riverwalk landscape with its many features is a joyful and memorable playground where all ages can celebrate a community with generous caring spirit.

Enjoy the Riverwalk every day. Celebrate mothers and caregivers every day, too. And listen for the bells as they ring out the songs of the season—they ring for you.

One more thing: The weekly summer Millennium Carillon concert season begins at 7PM Tues., June 4 and runs through August 20 at Rotary Hill along the Riverwalk. All concerts are free of charge.

The 16th Annual Small Business of the Year (SBY) Award Dinner was presented Friday night at the Wyndham Lisle-Chicago Hotel & Executive Meeting Center.

The stage was set with a large banner proclaiming the Centennial Celebration of the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce. Spotlights were shining. Sounds Abound was prepared with appropriate “theme” songs to accompany the announcement of every nominee. And Mike Evans, President and CEO of the Chamber, gave a warm welcome to members and guests.

Kevin Colbert served as Master of Ceremonies, assisted by magician and comedian Blake Grigsby. Sidekick Grigsby, a 2012 graduate of Neuqua Valley High School, provided wit with a few tricks up his sleeve to keep the festivities moving and entertaining.

The SBY award is the highest entrepreneurial honor presented by the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce. The award and its ceremony held in the spring of the year is the business community’s way of recognizing outstanding dedication and accomplishments among Chamber members.

Divided into five categories, the SBY is presented to recognize Professional, Business to Consumer, Business to Business, Emerging Business, Retail, Not-for-Profit. A special category for “Emerging Businesses” is geared for enterprises less than three years old. Members nominate one another for the awards. Once nominations are submitted, the winners are selected by the blue-ribbon committee, a panel of the previous year’s winners.

Category by category, three businesses were celebrated as the the top three nominees before the winner of the SBY in that category was announced.

For 2013, Naperville Dental Specialists & General Oral Health Care was named Professional SBY; Players Indoor Sports, Business to Consumer – SBY; Paul Gregory Media, Business to Business SBY; Le Chocolate du Bouchard, Retail SBY; and Giving DuPage, Nonprofit Business of the Year.

Caregiver Harbor, Inc.; Ego Gym; and Primrose School at Naperville Crossings, all less than three years old, were recognized as “Emerging Businesses.”

During festivities Naperville Dental Specialists & General Oral Health Care was lauded as the 2013 Small Business of the Year. Owner and founder Dr. Anthony LaVacca was unable personally to accept the award as he had a prior speaking engagement in Wisconsin. His wife, Dr. Manal Ibrahim, accepted the first place honor for him.

“The weekly summer Naperville Municipal Band Concerts start up again on June 6 in Central Park located at 55 Concert Lane, near Benton & Washington streets, and continue every Thursday evening until August 15,” said Katie Wood of the Downtown Naperville Alliance. “In addition to a great 90-minute free concert performed by the Naperville Municipal Band, four lucky audience members will win a gift card compliments of a sponsoring downtown business.
