My goals, dear reader, are to share the beauty of the theater that exists in Naperville and to give you knowledge about our local organizations, performers, and performance dates and auditions.
Occasionally, I’ll throw in my opinion as well. Because, as my friend Stuart says, “Opinions are like elbows – everyone has one…..or two.” So…on with the show...

Shaking Spears

3PM Feb. 12
Written and directed by Erika Grotto, appearing at Center Stage Theater . Celebrated English playwright and poet William Shakespeare penned 10 histories, 10 tragedies, 18 comedies...and zero musicals. Until now. This original comedy combines four of the bard's most famous tragedies with the music of pop princess Britney Spears to create a musical comedy with just the right balance of class and crass. Just the way Shakespeare would have liked it. The comedy follows young Hamlet, who is concerned about the ambition of Macbeth, his uncle who is also his new stepfather and king. With his friends Brutus Rosencrantz and Cassius Guildenstern, Hamlet makes deadly plans for the Ides of March. The show is not appropriate for children, as it contains some lewd humor and Britney Spears music. INFO: (630) 355-9212.

nEditor's Note: PN has been backing the production of "Backers' Audition of the Lovesong of Ed for Rose" by Lisle resident Don Jacklich through its trials of re-writes and re-stagings since 2003, mostly because the clever lyrics and catchy tunes remind us of the great work of Stephen Sondheim. During the recent production performed at Benet Academy, we were inspiried by the Don Jacklich's song, "Never Give Up on Your Dream," so fitting for everyone in the arts!

What some actors do as their day job?
It is rare for an actor to earn income to live off of without subsidizing it with multiple jobs. The majority of actors have second jobs to be able to pay the rent. A college professor told me that there is less than 1 percent of people who can make a living without a second job… Most people see acting as a hobby and perform because of the love of the stage and performing. I thought it would be interesting to find out what some of our talented actors do as their “day job” – and of course, I get to include my friend Stuart!!
Christina, Terry, Stuart and Jenni are some of the finest performers in the community. They are always performing and can be seen on the stages from Naperville to Chicago! They have managed their time and “day jobs” to be allowed to work and keep their theater passion alive.
Jennifer (Jenni) Grubb has performed throughout Chicagoland. While we have been lucky to see her on the stages of Light Opera Works, Drury Lane, First Folio, Circle Theater, Marriott Theatre, Bohemian Theatre Ensemble, Magical Starlight Theatre, Balliwick Theatre, and Porchlight at night, during the day she is busy working as a Research Technologist for the University of Chicago!
“If I wanted to sell my condo, live with 5 other people, and eat ramen and work for any show instead of performing in shows based on artistic quality, I could live as an actor.”
But, instead she does research in radiation and cellular oncology work with proteins involved in DNA Repair…whew! We are glad that her degree from Indiana University (shameless plug - IU grad promoting another) permits her to work (with the help of a supportive manager) and balance theater – and gave her the opportunity to earn a Joseph Jefferson Non-Equity Awards – Actress in a Principal Role - Musical or Revue (nomination): Oh Boy! — City Lit Theater Company.
While Jenni works on the research side of science, Christina Romana has found work in the administrative area of science and medicine. Christina has also performed in Chicago with the Balliwick Repertory and Greenhouse Theatre Center, as well as with The Summer Place Theatre and North Central College’s Summer Theater Program. She was also nominated for an Irene Ryan award for her performances as Alexandra in “O Pioneers,” while a student at North Central College. Christina is a precertification coordinator at Children’s Memorial Hospital. She works days and no weekends, which allows her to rehearse and perform in the evenings and the weekends!
My friend, Stuart Vance also works a day job – a 27-year veteran teacher – with two years of private Kindergarten, 13 years in 1st grade, four years looping 1st to 2nd and back , six years at 2nd grade and the rest in Kindergarten again. He has worked with Naperville District 204 since 1988 - one year at Clow and the rest at Springbrook. And, he has earned one of the highest accolades awarded a teacher: he was nominated for the Golden Apple Award in 2000 and 2003 and was a finalist in 2003. Stuart has been seen in productions by The Summer Place Theatre, Magical Starlight Theatre, Wheaton Drama, Village Theatre Guild, and many more. Stuart makes an effort to do shows that are “family friendly.”
“Performing forces me to be more organized in my job. I need to be able to leave work at a decent time and complete all the components of my job and still have about 10 hours a week to give to a show. I love doing the shows that "my kids" can come see. It is an amazing thing to look out in an audience and see the shining smile of a child that you are entertaining and touching their lives,” says Vance. “Children learn in so many ways and this just adds another dimension to that learning. I'm lucky to have a job that I truly love and a past time that I find so fulfilling.”
Terry Foster-Hulbert has worked in most of our local theater companies: Village Theater Guild, Epic Theater, Magical Starlight Theatre, The Summer Place Theatre, Tempo Players, Rye Playland, and Pheasant Run. While he keeps his feet steadily grounded when performing, he has been a flight attendant and a purser with Northwest Airlines, American Trans Air (ATA) and is in his 14th year of working with American Airlines.
“I started in 1977 and continue to perform because it is my passion. I started out wanting to make a living as a performer and tried, but always swore that I would quit if it ever got to be work. It got to be work and I lost my passion.” Lucky for us, Terry continues to delight us with his amazing skills in community theatre. “I continue to perform in community theater because everyone is there for the purpose of giving everyone the best they have. I am always honored when audience members are so moved by a performance and they let me know how much they enjoyed the show. I work with some very dedicated and hared working people and I continue to learn from every experience I have.”
Although these remarkable performers have the talent and skill to be full-time actors –they have achieved a balance to fulfill their passion as actors with matching passion in their careers. It can be done!

January 2012
Where are they now???
Have you ever wondered what happened to those great performers you saw on stage at the Summer Place Theatre and various other venues in the community?
Where are those individuals who's amazing talents brightened up many summer evenings and brought you to a different and a magical place for a few hours? From the community stage to Broadway, many of Naperville’s favorite actors have “made it big” working professionally in Chicago, Hollywood, the Big Apple and across the globe. Naperville’s oldest community theater, The Summer Place Theater, Inc., has seen these talents move from the local community theatre stage to the big time and are happy to see some of the best and the brightest have a spotlight of their own.
Do you remember these names: Amy Arbizzani, Joe Tokarz, Alex Alguilar and Adrian Alguilar, Beth Lanza, Alene Robertson, Grace Etzkorn, Parvesh Cheena and Matt Whalen? These are just some of the stars from our community doing some really great professional work around the world!
Joe Tokarz has had great success in his career. Having performed in Jekyll & Hyde and This is the Moment for The Summer Place and as the Beast in Magical Starlight’s Beauty and the Beast. Tokarz also worked as Technical Director and served on the Board of Directors for Summer Place as well as a Director for Magical Starlight’s Cinderella. Tokarz has worked throughout the Chicagoland area, including the Marriott Theatre (Les Mis, Joseph, My Fair Lady, Aladdin), Chicago Shakespeare (Passion), Theatre at the Center (Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom and Man of La Mancha), Drury Lane (Wizard of Oz), Goodman Theatre (Candide), and the United States Premiere of Jerry Springer the Opera at the Baliwick Repertory Theatre. He is currently touring the country in the 25th Anniversary National Tour of Les Miserables as the Jean Valjean Alternate – performing the role weekly.
Amy Arbizzani spent many years on the Summer Place stage being cast in leading roles in West Side Story, Annie, Anything Goes, A Chorus Line, Footloose and This is the Moment. She went on to spend many years on Chicago’s theater scene, including work at the Goodman Theatre and Marriott Theatre. She garnered a Joseph Jefferson award for her role in Parade and toured nationally with the first National Broadway production of The Light in the Piazza, and Internationally with Twice Charmed (Fairy Godmother) for the Walt Disney Company. Arbizzani moved to New York City and her credits include Sapphire Blissett in Theo & Co for Musicals Tonight, Marisisa in The Legacy, and Helena in the concert version of Warsaw. Amy continues her work in the musical Seasons, for the Times Square International Theatre Festival.
Alene Robertson performed in many Summer Place shows, including Damn Yankees in 1977 and as Mother Abbess in Sound of Music in 1978. Robertson also performed with Chicago theaters for many years and is a veteran to the stage. She performed as Miss Hannigan in the national tour and revival of Annie, Reverend Mother in Theatre at the Center’s Nunset Boulevard and as Vera Charles in Drury Lane’s Mame, where she received a Joseph Jefferson Award nomination. She is currently performing in White Christmas at the Marriott Lincolnshire.
Alex Aguilar and Adrian Aguilar were amazing dancers when they performed in Anything Goes and now both of them have made their mark on Chicagoland theatre and beyond. Both have performed at the Marriott Theatre and Ravinia as well as summer stock work. At the Marriott, they both performed in Drowsy Chaperone and Chorus Line, and recently, Adrian played Danny in the Chicago revival of the original Grease and Alex is currently performing on Broadway in Lysistrata Jones.
Beth Lanza performed in Jekyll & Hyde, playing the role of Lucy for Summer Place Theatre and was a part of This is the Moment. The following summer, she started her professional work at Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre and recently performed the role of Belle in Beauty and the Beast. She worked for the Disney Cruise Lines as a performer and has performed in many Chicago theaters, including Light Opera Works, Griffin Theatre, Circle Theatre, and Porchlight – where she was nominated for a Joseph Jefferson Award for her role in Meet John Doe. She earned a Joseph Jefferson Award for her performance in Can-Can with Circle Theatre. Beth continues her work in January in Light in the Piazza with Theo Ubique.
For fans of Outsourced, the goofy, but hilarious Gupta, played by Parvesh Cheena was in Whatever Happened on the Way to the Forum with current Board of Director Ted Waltmire. A Naperville actress recently saw Parvesh in Los Angeles, and he spoke fondly of his experiences with the Summer Place.
Grace Etzkorn was the youngest member of the cast of Cheaper by the Dozen in 2005. It was her stage debut. She has since gone on to perform in films, commercials, and numerous other theatrical experiences – including performing in the American Girl shows in Chicago and starring in the national tour of Annie as Kate and as the understudy for Annie.
Matt Whalen has served on-stage and behind the scenes at The Summer Place and he continues to make his mark on Chicago theater. As an actor, he first performed in Heidi (with my friend Stuart) , and later had roles in Into the Woods, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (again..with my friend Stuart).., Jekyll and Hyde, and Kiss Me Kate. He has produced and directed shows, most recently Grease this past summer. In Chicago, he has performed professionally with Music by the Lake, Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, Light Opera Works, Signal Ensemble Theatre, Buffalo Theatre Ensemble, and First Folio.
The Far West Suburbs are proud to see the talents from Naperville, Oswego, Lisle and throughout the area reach beyond their community and reach for their dreams! There are so many more who have seen Naperville as their launching pad –but there is just not enough room to include everyone!
The next article will be about what amazing talented actors do during the day – and I’m sure to include my friend Stuart.

“Epic” Collaboration Opening in September – Children of Eden
I have said that the Naperville arts community needs to find the “community” in community theater -- to support each other’s theater companies, the conflicting rehearsals, the sharing of props and costumes, the sharing of actor’s – to attend each other’s shows and to be genuinely supportive. Epic Theatre Company and The School of Performing Arts found the perfect answer to positive and supportive collaboration with the staging of Children of Eden opening in a few weeks.
Epic Theatre Company is a fairly new, well-respected theater company that has gained critical acclaim and is based out of the Naperville Community Christian Church. Together with the established Naperville tradition of youth arts, the School of Performing Arts, they bring the adult and youth acting world together to help inspire, mentor and to take the journey through Children of Eden.
Act One is based on the story of Adam and Eve and Cain and Able and Act Two is the story of Noah and the flood. The music is lovely and sends the message that the hardest part of love is letting go.
“We are very excited and the company of artists is truly so extremely talented and passionate about this gorgeous and moving show.” says Carrie Bramlett, Theatre program Director of School of Performing Arts. “So many folks on both sides of Epic…and The School of Performing Arts have given so much of their time and talents already.... and the cast is just amazing -- just sitting in on a 'staging review' rehearsal, I couldn't stop the tears streaming down my face!”
This gorgeous and moving show written by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell) is based on the story of Genesis and presents the conflict between parents and children.
“The show challenges us to reaffirm our beliefs both personal and spiritual,” said Director Heather Hutchison. “It validates our own daily struggles, comforts us as we try to make sense of sadness and sustains us as we seek the light that illuminates each of our lives.”
The production runs two weekends, Sept. 16-25, at the Naperville Yellow Box – 1635 Emerson Lane; Napervile, IL 60540; INFO: wwww.epictheatrecompany.org.
“Everybody needs to see the show,” said Hutchison. “Regardless of your belief system or religion, you will be able to relate to the bond between parent and child and what truly bonds us all together – the HOPE that you will find your own Eden.”
As a fan of the arts – I’m so happy that the two companies have bonded together to put this production on stage - I’ll see you all there – and don’t forget to look for my friend Stuart!

Theatre Beat - Reflections
First, Theater Beat would like to say a sad good bye to one of our favorite sons, Jon Kaden, a young Thespian who performed in shows with Summer Place Theatre and Magical Starlight Theater. Jon was the son of active theater stars Patti and Ken Kaden and brother to Jeremy. We wish the family well and we are confident that Jonathan is entertaining all the angels in Heaven.
Second, another good bye is happening Sun., Aug. 7 as the Kidz in the Biz do their final performance at Tabor Hills at 1430 McDowell Road. Kidz in the Biz has served the community for more than 10 years locally and they even brought their mission to London! The final two performances are at 5:30PM and 7PM, Sun., Aug. 7.

Theatre-Hikes and its stories that move you! / August 2011
Theatre-Hikes is a nonprofit theatre company based out of Chicago, but it performs most of its shows at our own local Morton Arboretum in Lisle and allows for one of the most unique and beautiful backdrops for viewing and performing in a show.
A hike leader greets the audience and takes the audience to its first “scene.” The actors perform…then the hike leader guides the audience to another location, where the next part of the show is performed. This continues until the show is complete and the audience has enjoyed a terrific performance in spectacular locations.
I have attended many Theatre-Hikes performances and have always marveled at the quality of the shows and what the actors can do without elaborate sets and props. The Arboretum landscape is the stage and the professional, paid actors are relied on to tell the story. This is truly a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Artistic Director, Bradley Baker states that Theatre-Hikes seeks to employ the highest level of actors and hires Equity Actors whenever the budget allows as well, “Theatre-Hikes has been a training ground for many professional actors currently working at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Steppenwolf, Goodman etc. I hope to soon give newer Chicago actors the chance to work with these past Theatre-Hikes actors to give them more connections to that experience and knowledge as well as create a company that can hire these professionals in a city with far too few equity jobs for the actors who live here.”
Theatre-Hikes performs in venues throughout Chicagoland. These locations and information is on their website. Baker adds, “We have created a community outreach committee to fund more free performances, (hopefully next year in more Chicago Parks) for those who cannot afford to see our paid performances. This committee has organized 2 free performances at the Little Red Schoolhouse Nature Center and with some more funding could perform in Oak Park, Oz Park, we are also looking at many outdoor venues on the north and south side along the lake. We have also discussed working with CEASEFIRE and ONE (Organization of the North East - serving Edgewater, Uptown and Andersonville) to get people engaged in our productions or to get people to attend our productions to have pride in their outdoor venues like parks and playgrounds.”
Theatre-Hikes performs auditions for its shows in early spring and performs early summer through the fall – if you want to get on their email list for information, please visit their website at www.theatrehikes.org and enjoy! Maybe I can even get my friend Stuart to audition!
Tools for the Actor - June 2011
by Lynn Hodak
As in any craft, an actor has to have a “tool kit” to succeed. In the Naperville community, we are fortunate to be able to provide access to individuals and organizations that offer these tools for the actor.
Selecting a Vocal Coach
First, let’s start with a vocal coach. What is the style of music you want to work on? Do you want to work on opera? Musical theater? Pop? Do you need work on music theory, ear training sight singing? Do you need help finding audition songs or do you need help with college auditions? Or, do you just want to learn the proper way to sing?
Actor and Director Matt Whalen says, “Finding a good voice teacher with a good reputation is extremely important because you only have one voice. It's your instrument and you need someone you can trust to make sure you are singing in a healthy manner. If they take you down the wrong road it can be hard to get back on track. Along with a voice teacher, or instead of, you may want a vocal coach. This person will help you with audition material, focus more on the artistic aspects of singing, while not talking about technique as much...more like a musical director.”
Many people will go to a voice specialist to strengthen a belt, but then move to another teacher to enhance classical education. Interview the voice teacher and ask questions – to see if there is a “match.” We are lucky there are so many vocal options in the area.
Vocal Coaches
The coaches noted below are people I can recommend through personal experiences; seeing the growth of students they have assisted; or through referrals of those I respect. This is a short list of diverse voice teachers in the area:– I’m sure you can “google” more people – but this is a strong list to start with:

Jenn Fitch is a vocal coach who has worked in the area for quite a while and she has a doctorate in vocal performance. She has worked with broadway and pop singers and she considers herself a technical and feels she is especially help for singers who need work on their vocal technique, support, and placement – getting the body to work for you, not against you. INFO: (630)803-3434 or sing4me11@comcast.net
Gina Graffagna focuses on classical and musical theater, stressing on building a proper, healthy voice technique to help students understand how their voice works and to avoid future vocal damage. INFO: ggraffagna@gmail.com

Destination: Naperville! / May 2011
Wentz Concert Hall & Fine Arts Center at North Central College
Naperville has all the bells and whistles— literally from the Moser Tower with a 72-bell carillon to a nationally recognized library. And an emerging pearl in the heart town that deserves our attention and patronage is our fine arts hub —a truly exceptional dance, art, music, and drama hub located in the center of downtown Naperville on the North Central College campus. More and more, it's becoming "THE Fine Arts Destination of Illinois."
It took years of fundraising to create these new facilities. North Central College Fine Arts Director Brian Lynch—and one of the drivers of the new arts destination —points out that everything was built without any cost to taxpayers. The destination includes a concert hall, a thrust stage theater, a black box theater, an art gallery, a library gallery built in this millennium and a large 1,050-seat theater built back in 1926.
The newest structure is located on Chicago next to the parking garage, Wentz Concert Hall. After two years of building, Wentz Hall opened in November, 2008, named in honor of Dr. Myron Wentz, a NCC 1963 alumni who donated almost $10M. Wentz is a scientist, entrepreneur and music- lover, who recently came to Naperville to promote his book, “The Healthy Home.”
Appearing at Wentz has been everyone from community groups — Naperville Men’s Glee Club, Young Naperville Singers and DuPage Symphony Orchestra— to nationally recognized entertainment— Susan Lucci, the Ides of March, the Vienna Boys Choir and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
“The acoustics are a musician’s dream,” said Lynch. “We saw smiles on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra members as they left the Wentz stage.”
This unique structure allows them to be able to hear every tone and provides an amazing acoustic experience for the audience and performers alike.
The Schoenherr Art Gallery is located on the main level next to Wentz Hall. It’s a lovely space used to display ceramics, drawings, paintings, photography and more. It opened its doors with an Andy Warhol exhibit. Showing now is an intriguing exhibit of Peter Wexler models of theater set designs. The gallery also opens it doors to the community – the Naperville Art League has an exhibition once a year.
The Madden Theatre is located in the lower level of the facility – a black box 2,500 square foot theater. Vocalists, Experimental Theater Productions, Film Screenings, and Dance Performances have been housed in this 150-seat facility.
Down the street on Ellsworth Street is Meiley-Swallow Hall which has been restructured as a 240-seat theater with a “thrust” or ¾ stage for musical and theatre productions. My friend Stuart loves how close the audience is to the actors because it really gets you “involved” in the production.
Pfeiffer Hall is located on Benton Street and has over 1000 seats. It hosts large theatrical productions, recitals, and the North Central College Summer Program, which the community participates. And of course, that is my friend Stuart takes the stage. The Osterle Library Gallery is located on School Street and has displayed photography and paintings.
All of the new and updated facilities are rentable to the community and is a home to the North Central College students as well. This corner in Naperville has grown and continues to evolve over the past few years and it really makes me proud to be a part of this cultural city!
Although I have been in Meiley-Swallow Hall and Pfeiffer Hall numerous times, it took this article for me to tour Wentz Hall, the gallery and Madden Theatre…Shame on me.
And just because of scheduling conflicts, I’m yet to see a concert in that amazing facility and theatre – but I’m making a point to get there soon.
Napervillians are known for getting out of town at Spring Break, for taking a summer vacation before school begins, and for going to summer homes in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Indiana..but why not take a day or so of vacation in Naperville – our cultural fine arts destination? You might want to catch a concert or some other event. And call me and I’ll try to join you. This link will lead you to a spectacular event.
And, as Brian Lynch likes to say, “If you haven’t been here yet, what are you waiting for?” Don’t’ be like me and wait…
Focus: Tips for your next audition! / April 2011
It’s spring time in the western suburbs and auditions are in the air - and they will begin in the next month as theater companies are gearing up for their summer productions!
To help actors who might want to brush up on a few tips about auditioning, I have surveyed some of our leading local directors—and my friend Stuart. They have come up with some great ideas on how to succeed in auditions. The directors were asked:
1. What you do look for in an audition?
2. What is the biggest suggestion you can give one who auditions?
Director of Summer Place Theatre's upcoming production of “Grease” and working actor, Matt Whalen states, “Other than the obvious, I’m looking for someone who is talented and fits what I'm looking for; someone who is prepared, confident, has a nice personality, and makes strong choices in their audition. I'm ultimately looking for people who are going to be easy to work with and who will bring a lot to the table.”
Both Whalen and Fine Arts Director for North Central College and Production Coordinator and Director/Choreographer for North Central College Summer Music Program Brian Lynch state that directors “are on the actor’s side.“
“Relax!!!” said Lynch. “We want you to do well. Enjoy what you are doing and we will too. Who knows? We might even cast you!” :-)
Founder of new theater group Naked Mole Rat Heather Hutchison states that homework and preparedness are keys for a successful audition, “Know the show you are auditioning for, be familiar with the characters, plot and songs.”
Kris Visher, Director, Producer, and Magical Starlight Theater Board Member states that it is important to follow direction both in what the posted requirements are for auditions, as well as in the audition room.
Lynch adds, “Be prepared, know your song well, know what kind of an intro you want, and PERFORM like it was opening night!!!”
“Pick audition material that will catch our attention immediately,” says Whalen.
“And come prepared with your own sheet music in a binder or folder, clearly marked where to start and finish,” states Hutchison. And above all, “Smile and be positive,” states Visher.
And as always – I need to add a few opinions from me: 1. You audition from the moment you step in the audition area – everyone watches behavior and interaction because every company wants a team player. Many have lost parts because of their actions while waiting and interacting with others BEFORE auditioning. 2. Dress professionally – take time to pull your hair off of your face, wear something you can move in, but wear something that doesn’t distract from your performance. 3. Know what you are singing about – act the song, don’t just show a strong voice – but be an actor who can sing. 4. Say hi when you walk in the audition room..before singing or starting a monologue – introduce yourself and your piece.
How can I write a column without including my friend Stuart? Stuart is an outstanding actor and singer who has been cast in many productions throughout the Naperville community and he shares some pearls of wisdom from his experiences. He knows that when you are audition, you are also auditioning the theater company.
Before auditioning, Stuart says, “Beyond the obvious of ‘do I want to do this show?’ I need to see the appearance of the organization. Is there a schedule for rehearsals and the time leading up to performances? Do they have someone welcoming you at the door? Are they glad to see me? All important: especially when trying to join a new group!”
And once you decide to audition, Stuart suggests, “Be prepared! Don't trust yourself to just wing it. Know what roles you’re interested in and be honest about what you will accept as a role if you are cast. Is chorus okay? Don't say it is and then back out because you really only wanted a specific role and didn't get it. They may not like it, but they will respect you for your honesty! After you have prepared: go, SMILE, and have fun; most of all remember: Sometimes you win and sometimes you don't - that's all part of the game. It took me a long time to learn that it wasn't personal toward me. I might just be too tall, too old, not have the right color hair or some other specific element that a director is looking for!”
So my dear thespians – I hope you all audition or sign up for a show! Break a leg – and I’ll be there to see you (and Stuart) on stage this summer!
–Lynn Hodak
North Central College Summer Music Theatre / March 2011
Brian Lynch and Suzy Olsen spent many summer nights rehearsing and performing in Merrillville, Indiana, with the Ross Summer Music Theatre program under the direction of Jerry Reinhart. Those memories, camaraderie, and performance challenges were the foundation used to create a Naperville summer tradition, North Central College (NCC) Summer Music Theatre in 2000.
“I had a good time growing up and I knew I could bring this type of theatre to Naperville where kids and their parents could perform together, “said Lynch.
The NCC Summer Music Theatre differentiates from other programs because it offers actors both audition and non-audition aspects. For people who wish to be in a show without the pressure of auditioning, they simply register for the program (for a nominal fee) through the college. Those individuals who wish to have the challenge of a role and to stretch their acting skills are able to audition for a specific role. (All actors still need to register through the college). The Directors run rehearsals professionally and take great care to utilize actor’s time well, while understanding personal summer scheduling.
In 2000, the premiere show was “Oklahoma,” directed by Lynch. The program continued to grow and in 2003, “Evita” had 142 people in the cast. The interest and demand created the need to offer two summer shows. Suzy Olsen was added to the directing team and she directed her first show, “Joseph,” while Lynch directed “Sound of Music,” (with my friend Stuart).
The program continued to grow and in 2009, Matt Boresi, NCC alumni, directed “The Mikado,” a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. Now North Central College offers three musicals every summer to provide experiences for a wide audience.
Lynch brings an impressive set of credentials to North Central and the Summer Music Program. He spent 7 years touring with various Broadway musicals, including, “Aspects of Love, “Cats,” and performing as Jean Valjean in the national touring production of “Les Miserable.”
Lynch’s work as choreographer earned him Joseph Jefferson Award nominations for outstanding choreography for “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Zorba,” “Follies,” and “Grease,” for which he received the 1984 award.
Before beginning his touring career, Lynch appeared in Chicago at the Candlelight Dinner Playhouse where he served as choreographer, dance captain, assistant stage manager, and performer in more than 50 shows.
Lynch has been a member of the North Central College faculty since 1995 and is currently the Fine Arts Director for North Central, and he continues to serve as the Production Coordinator for all the summer shows and as a Director/Choreographer for one show every summer.
Olsen has her own set of impressive credentials. She toured with Donny Osmond on the national tour of “Joseph,” was a Rockette in the Chicago Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and has performed in all the local major theatres: Pheasant Run, Candlelight, The Goodman, and the Marriott. While raising a growing family, Suzy keeps busy during the school year choreographing for Benet High School, teaching dance and choreographing at North Central College and for coordinating the St. Raphael drama program. She returns every summer to direct and choreograph one of the summer shows.
NCC Alumni Matt Boresi joined the Summer Staff to direct the first summer operetta and he has created a unique summer offering. He serves as a Visiting Lecture of the Theatre during the school year and is the Director of the Summer Musical Theater Workshops.
Lynch, Olsen and Boresi offer all actors a fun experience, in a safe and family-oriented environment. I have seen almost every summer show at North Central College – and the quality of the productions are consistently outstanding – from sets to costumes, to direction and performance. They are always enjoyable and you can tell the cast is having a good experience because their excitement transcends to the audience.
And, if you go, you can usually see my friend Stuart in one or two of their productions every summer!
Focus: The Summer Place Theatre Produces 'Gypsy' in Winter! / February 2011
My friend Stuart is on the Board of Directors for the Summer Place Theatre (SPT)...and to maintain transparency, so am I.
I was part of Summer Place Theatre’s Board of Directors for over 3 years the first stint. I took a “sabbatical” from the Board, and after becoming an “empty nester.” I rejoined a few months ago and I’m thrilled to be a part of an organization with such a long history in the Naperville Community! And, hey – I get to have more time to hang out with my friend Stuart again – so it’s all good.
The Summer Place Theatre (SPT) has been entertaining audiences since 1966, founded by Donald Jamison and Dr. Donald Shanower of North Central College. The first seasons were held in a circus tent on an empty parking lot with seats donated by a local movie house. After several tornadoes the site was replaced with an outdoor pavilion, which, thanks to the Great Blizzard of 1979, was again replaced. Since then the company created a strong relationship with the Naperville Park District and District 203/204 Naperville Schools and moved to Naperville Central High School and has remained a part of the community since its inception.
SPT produces straight dramatic/comedic plays and full-scale musicals. Past performances include: “Mame” “Chorus Line,” “42nd Street,” “Anything Goes,” “Footloose,” “Cheaper by the Dozen,” and “Arsenic and Old Lace.” With a subscriber base and community that supports the theater; SPT seeks to produce theater that will be enjoyed by a diverse audience.
SPT has pushed theatrical limits to put on the most extravagant and professional shows possible. Many SPT cast, crew, and musicians are working/paid actors/musicians – and many of our alumni have gone on to reach, stretch and push into higher professional levels – from television (can you say GUPTA?), to Broadway to Disney cruise ships…SPT is happy they spent time on their stage on their theatrical journey.
Additionally, the Summer Place produces “Ghost Stories in the Park in the Dark” in the fall in conjunction with the Naperville Park District and will continue in its “story telling” format in October, 2011. Summer Place started performing winter cabarets and in a few days, SPT is producing its first full-scale winter musical, “Gypsy.”
Gypsy is filled with lots of first – the first “winter show,” the first time the theater will perform at the new Center Stage Theater, and the first time a Naperville Councilman, a Naperville District 203 teacher, and a Naperville Central staff member perform in one show!!!
“Gypsy” is a true story, based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous Burlesque artist – with the focus on the ultimate “stage mom” Rose and is being produced by The Summer Place Theatre, in conjunction with Traveling Trunk Entertainment.
Because I am one of the Producers of this show – I have some insight into the production and can give you a bit of a preview:
I love that the roles of Tulsa and Louise are married couple Michael and Brianne DeFrang – and the dance they do together is consistent, strong, sweet, and truly well-done. The choreography throughout the show is executed superbly and choreographer Shawn Quinlan gets a big shout out from me!
Co-Director Michael Vaughn deserves another shout out for working individually and collectively with the actors to achieve outstanding stage relationships. We see the complex relationship between Dainty June (Jen Schmidt) and Louise (Brianne DeFrang) and the forever forgiving and endearing Herbie (NCHS teacher Keith Carlson) and Mama Rose (Sarah Conrad).
Audiences will love the cameo role of Naperville Councilman, Bob Fieseler and will howl through the Burlesque song featuring Tesse Turla (NCHS Staff Member Katie Long Piper), Mazeppa (Suzanne Compton), and Electra (Phyllis Guasta). With New York trained-actress, Conrad as the lead role of Rose and young Kara Garland as the adorable Baby June – audiences of all ages will enjoy this high-energy show and will say “wow” to Conrad’s voice and “awww” to Garland’s performance. And Orchestra Leader and drummer Justin Kono and the orchestra create a great sound for the show… Shout outs to all the cast, crew and musicians..
Hope to see you at the show – look for me and say hello – I’ll be at every performance.
Focus: Theater Beat presents Magical Starlight Theater – Flying on the Magic Carpet Ride/ January 2011
Magical Moments…Quality Theater…Family–Oriented Presentations = Magical Starlight Theater. Since 1994, Magical Starlight Theater (MST) has treated audiences with such favorites as Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, Oliver!, Snow White, Cinderella, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Originated from Summer Place Theater’s vision to fill the community’s need and interest in children’s shows, it partnered with the Park District in 1994 to create MST - a long-standing Naperville family tradition.
In 2003, MST became a full Naperville Park District Program and has grown to include twice-a-year performances: a non-musical and a musical to allow all performers (singing and non-singing) an opportunity to participate. MST performances are family events – shows that can be seen by audiences of all ages and a chance for youth and adults to perform together on stage and behind the scenes to enjoy “magical” moments.
The program is driven by Board Members Kate Ray (one of the originating pioneers), Kris Visher, Jill Ludlam, Joe Pietrie, and Cynthia Katz, but it is also fueled by an army of volunteers who believe in the mission to reach out to provide quality theatrical productions to entertain children.
MST has had milestones in its history – selling out shows and receiving an excellence award for its 2005 Seussical production. Before a stage version of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory was available, Visher wrote and requested and received the rights to perform directly from the Roah Dahl’s Estate in London. MST brought “flying” to the stage and rented equipment, received training and “flew” Peter Pan, Michael, Wendy, and John in Peter Pan. Even their sets and costumes have been recognized by other theater companies because of the detail, beauty, and workmanship – oftentimes resulting in a sale or rentals!
This year, MST was faced with less available resources and construction constraints at the traditional venue, Naperville Central High School. MST moved the performance venue to Naperville North High School and for the first time it is performing one “all youth” musical. The change of venue brings a different set of challenges, including only one rehearsal to assure all the technical parts of the show are in sync and ready to go. Normal “tech week” for theater companies allow for 5 – 6 days to prepare for technical readiness. However, Producer Ray has put together an exceptional team who is up for the challenge.
Aladdin, Jr Coming Soon! Aladdin, Jr. will be performed by 36 youth actors and is filled with surprises, magic, and a touch of Disney-esque wonderment. The royalty contract of “junior productions” requires only performers 18 years old and younger serve as the actors on stage. However, to continue the history of adults and youth working together, 18 adult actors will support the youth, serving as “puppeteers.” The idea was inspired by the Lion King parade and – many of the Magical Starlight Theater’s long-term “adult favorites” will be seen working the puppets to bring this dazzling part of the show to life. Countless hours have been put in by numerous volunteers and the results are a “wow factor.”
“It will be a spectacular event,” says Director and long-term Board Member Kris Visher. “Our adult puppeteers and production team are making this moment, a full Magical Starlight Theatre – Magical Moment. This talented cast is supported by the best of the best and truly this is a production not to be missed.”
Cast members and adult puppeteers have shared their excitement about the upcoming performances, stating that the show is going to be incredible and that the puppets really add a sensation to the show. It’ll be fun seeing adult veterans doing something so creative in support of the youth performers – headed by John Ludlam as Aladdin and Alex Oechsel as Jasmine!
I have purchased my tickets for opening night – and I’m looking forward to seeing my friend Stuart begin the magical performance as “Hector” – the Magical Starlight Theatre Icon. Look for Paul as well – both adults are sharing the duties on various nights to introduce the show.
Alert about showtimes! Usually 9 – 10 shows are performed over three weekends, but because of venue restraints, the show will be performed six (6) times over one weekend, Jan. 14-16. Seats are not reserved, but tickets can be purchased online for a bargain price of $8. If you wait until show time – you will pay $10 at the door and may miss a performance if it is sold out – so purchase early!

Evergreen Theater / December 2010
Evergreen Theater is one of the newest theater companies in Naperville. Craig Berger, retired faculty member from the College of DuPage Theater Department and founder of the Buffalo Theatre Ensemble, is responsible, along with his esteemed Board of Directors, for bringing a different type of professional and intimate theater to Naperville. Berger brings a history of success, quality and dedication to the arts to our community – and Evergreen Theater is quickly gaining a reputation for outstanding performances.
As the only nonprofit corporation and nonequity professional company in the area, actors, designers and technical team receive pay for the work performed. The goal of Evergreen Theater is to become the first Equity company in the area. This would bring a new level of theatre to Naperville and give us one of the few equity theater companies outside of Chicago – making Naperville stand apart from other communities once again.
The mission of Evergreen Theater is: "Presenting Stories of Dreams, Lost and Found." They are a company of dedicated professional actors and artists that gather an audience to witness stories about dreams lost and found. This entertaining, but compelling form of engagement theatre lingers with us all, long after the curtain and encourages us to reaffirm our lives or to reconstruct the paths to our dreams.
The type of theater you will see presented by Evergreen Theater is along the lines of productions put up by Steppenwolf Theater – good theater, outstanding artistic presentation, intelligent, and moving. The productions they have mounted since 2007 include: Scrambled Eggs; Dreams, Lost and Found; Art; Helen's Troy; Duck Variations; Arrow of Love; Bill W. and Dr. Bob; Book of Days; and A Doll's House.
Their newest show runs in December– with the first weekend at Center Stage Theater and the next two at the Women’s Club in downtown Naperville. “A Voice of My Own” follows the lives of women writers from BC to present time. These women discuss their struggles and their determination to get their words out to the world – and eventually on their own without hiding in their room or writing under a pseudonym. Information for tickets is noted below.
Although I love a good musical - as a dedicated theater member and supporter – I am thrilled we have a company dedicated to a different type of theater in the area. As a community, we can support Evergreen Theater’s efforts to keep them performing and to maintain success and longevity! Fair Lady Productions, Kidz Kabaret & Center Stage Theater / Nov. 2010
Who knew that a production held in a backyard in 2003 would develop into an integral arts organization in Naperville? Today, Fair Lady Productions is the parent company of Center Stage Theater and Kidz Kabaret, hosting over 100 productions per year with over 400 students. Fair Lady Productions, a nonprofit theater company, has grown and expanded to become a vital part of the arts community.
The non-audition group of Fair Lady’s production, Kidz Kabaret, performed over 100 shows last year. The audition-group, the newly-formed Center Stage Players, performed over 20 shows last year, including Rent and Hairspray.
Executive Director and the visionary for Fair Lady Productions, Kandiss Hernandez, states that she was running a performance-based business without performance space. The Naperville community and the local theater companies were hungry for a new space to perform – the rental payments Fair Lady Productions paid per year could provide the foundation budget for a new space. Between government funding, grants, and strong financial support from the families of Kidz Kabaret and the city of Naperville, Center Stage was built this past year and has already shown nearly 70 performances since its summer opening.
The 170+ seat theater located at Quincy and Ogden is a remarkable space with state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment and earned Glancer Magazines’ 2010 Reader’s Choice for “Best Theater.” The seats are set on a rake, or “auditorium seating,” – so all seats provide great viewing space. There is a lovely “art deco” lobby with a concession and box office space. The floor is adorned with star “walk of fame” donor names and the walls house community and business “wall of fame” stars. Both stars are still available for purchase for a life-long tribute. Hernandez states that the theater is an on-going project with new equipment being added to create the most optimum space possible.
The most recent addition to the Center Stage Theater is the “Spotlight Room” – a very “cool” 100 – seat cabaret-type performance space. The American Girl theater from Chicago donated the stage after they closed and the space is versatile and ideal for recitals, business meetings, small show performances, and parties.
Hernandez understands the desire to find reasonably-priced theater space and rentees who are flexible and easy to work with. She is dedicated to working with the community to provide rentals and already many groups have secured space! Rates are flexible.
The School of Performing Arts / Oct. 2010 / Debut Piece
This month, Theater Beat’s focus is The School of Performing Arts (SPA), owned by community-spirited and the always-positive Barb Yokom. SPA is a highly regarded dance, music and drama school for the very young through adult.
Many acting classes are offered through the year: “Broadway Mini” classes are geared toward K – 2nd; "Improv 1" is offered for grades 2 - 4. Grades 2 - 12 students are offered 18-week acting classes in Musical Theatre, Improv and Acting for the Camera. These classes teach children many skills including public speaking and confidence – all while having a great time!
Theatre Program Director, Carrie Dean-Bramlett and her team just cast SPA’s next musical, “Annie” which will perform on November 27-28 at Pfeiffer Hall. There is just one part of the puzzle missing – Sandy the dog! Dogs will be auditioned October 23. See the notice below and bring your best “woof” to the audition.
SPA began a program a few years ago for students with special needs: “Spectrum.” Headed by Heather Hutchison, Spectrum offers students acting, music, and dance classes. After great success with, “Cats,” last spring – the school will be registering students in December for their second production: “The Wiz.” Youth with all special needs are invited to join. Programs will be modified to suit the abilities of the individual.
SPA offers dance classes for all levels, summer camps, and throughout the year, they bring in professionals to teach workshops and offer seminars. SPA is always updating programs and offerings to keep up with the trends in the arts. Managing Director, Joni Wiltz Berkley invites everyone to stay current with the activities and special programs this year to commemorate SPA’s 20th year.
