YOUTH REPRESENTATIVES SOUGHT TO SERVE ON CITY BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS

Hey, high school students? Ever wonder why certain parts of the Riverwalk receive enhancements?  Did you think Naper Settlement just opens it doors for the fun of it? Ever think about why a gas station is on a corner next to a subdivision?

Mayor George Pradel and the Naperville City Council would like to extend an invitation to exciting opportunities for Naperville high school students. Juniors and seniors can apply for positions on several city boards and commissions.

Interested students should submit a one-page essay to the Mayor's Office explaining their interest in serving, what strengths they could add to a board/commission and what they hope to get out of the experience. The essay should also include the student's name, address, phone number, high school, grade and indicate which board/commission they are most interested in serving. Students should anticipate actively participating on the boards/commissions, therefore, consideration should be given to the time commitment required. The deadline for submitting letters of interest is September 2009. For more information about serving your community, contact the Mayor's Office at 420-6018.

NCO YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES LIFE WORKSHOPS: HELPING TO INSPIRE GIRLS TO BE THEIR VERY BEST

Life Workshops: Helping Girls Have Fun, Manage Their Stress, and Boost Their Self Esteem

Do you know a junior high girl that could use more confidence and improved self esteem?  NCO Youth & Family Services (NCO) is now accepting enrollment for their fall Life Workshops program targeted for junior high/middle school girls.  This exciting program is a 6 week educational series and is designed to inspire teen females to find their own unique style of dealing with stress and having fun in life. The workshop begins Wednesday, October 15 from 7:00pm until 9:00pm and will run for 6 weeks at 1601 Bond Street in Naperville. The cost of the 6 week session is $150.  Scholarships are available if needed.

“Life Workshops is a fun and interactive program designed to highlight the importance of girls thinking positively about themselves and their lives,” said Kari Wittmann Lata, Clinical Director for NCO. “Girls truly enjoy the experience and are able to apply the skills they learn to so many parts of their lives.”

“We help girls learn the skills necessary to care about themselves, make positive choices, and to respond effectively to life's challenges. We encourage and identify the girl’s unique strengths and build on them, helping these girls achieve success in life,” explains one NCO therapist.  “The best part is watching the girls connect with each other and have fun practicing some of the coping strategies we teach them like yoga and guided imagery to relax and build confidence”.

Each session is packed with tips, techniques, new perspectives, helpful ideas, and exercises. The participating girls will learn the many self development techniques necessary to take care of the mind, body and spirit. Some of the specific topics include: inner and outer beauty, friendships, stress management, self image, communication skills, nutrition, and health.
