Greetings to PN / October 2014 / Volume 14 #2

-

Most recent greeting is posted at top of this page as it’s updated  throughout the month. Occasionally, Greetings to PN also are linked to other online PN stories. Many of these greetings, edited for space for the printed paper, will appear in the next issue of PN.

Thank you for keeping greetings as brief as possible. And thanks for sending your thoughts about this community with your signature. We welcome them!

TO PN / Thanks so much for running this announcement (nonprofit training workshop “Purposeful Boards & Powerful Fundraising”) /story in Positively Naperville!  I saw the Google alert come through this morning.  We are truly grateful for the exposure for what promises to be a great program.  Thanks again. —Shefali M. Trivedi, Giving DuPage

TO PN / Response to Reader Bruce Lamb’s Inquiry Regarding Naper Notify:  I hope this email finds you well. I received your email address and inquiry about Naper Notify, the City of Naperville’s mass notification system, from Stephanie Penick with Positively Naperville.

In your post to the Positively Naperville website, you asked why you need a login ID and password to receive Naper Notify. The login and password is for the purpose of setting up an account within the Naper Notify system. When you choose a login and password, you are setting up an account in which you can put your preferred contact information (e.g. home phone, cell phone, email address) by which to receive Naper Notify notifications. We ask for you to put your preferred contact information into the system so we know the best way to send you messages. Within your account, you can also choose what type of optional messages you want to receive, if any. (These include notifications such as brush and leaf collection, traffic alerts, and road and utility work, just to name a few.) Having an account also lets you note addresses of interest within the City, so if a notification impacts an area you care about, you can receive that message.

Ultimately, having an account that you “own” and can access repeatedly using your login and password allows you to make changes to your notification preferences. If you feel you are receiving too many notifications, you can go into your account and change the types of messages you receive. You can add and remove contact information so that you receive (or don’t receive) messages on certain devices. It ultimately puts the power of this system in your hands.

Bruce, I hope this helps. Please feel free to contact me directly at the phone number or email listed below in the signature line if you have further questions and I am happy to assist. —Kate Schultz, Communications Specialist I City Manager’s Office, City of Naperville, (630) 305-5341,  schultzk@naperville.il.us

TO PN: The Naperville Police & Fire Department Public Safety Open House had a terrific turnout. Next year look for more police demonstrations by our SWAT team!! —Julie Smith, Crime Prevention Specialist & Crime Free Multi-Housing Coordinator, Naperville Police Department

Editor’s Note: See PN’s review of the upbeat, much-photographed, fashionably timely NPD and NFD Style Show at the 2014 Public Safety Open House. Celebrate the season safely.

TO PN: I got the brainstorm to “read” PN at our destination (Golden, Colorado) and here is the result.  Adolph Coors is “watching” Doug read PN.  I thought it was pretty neat that Coors has a connection to Naperville.  The sun was not cooperating so we could not get a good shot of him but I think the silhouette looks good.  It could be that these pictures are too dark but…   —Nancy Davis

Editor’s Note: When Coors ventured to Colorado (find the story at Naper Settlement), he started his own brewery, thinking his brew was so good he didn’t need advertising. Still, in 1893, Coors Brewery released its first promotion “in the form of calendars that featured female figures.” And we’re reminded of the words of newspaper man Kin Hubbard who said, “The feller that don’t advertise may know his business, but nobody else does. Thanks to all of PN’s advertising supporters!

To PN: Shoshana asked me to forward you these photos of her in Israel. … She wanted you to know she’s thinking of you and everyone else back here in Naperville. —Peggy Frank

To PN:  Thanks so much for the great coverage of the Crime Prevention Calendar event on September 23. I am sure the students and parents were thrilled to see their photos and names in Positively Naperville (in print and online). We really appreciate your continued support! —Marcia Schild, Community Education/Crime Prevention Specialist, School Resource Unit, Naperville Police Department

To PN www.sports.positivelynaperville.com: Very cool! —Chris Ellers

To PN Facebook: Thanks for posting the game to the each of us who have moved away but our hearts are still their in Naperville. —Aaron Giles

To PN:  Your election section of PN is THE BEST anywhere! We went to the DuPage election commission office yesterday to apply for an absentee ballot, and your information is very complete! —Jini Clare, Naperville

To PN: Whenever I think of the “Positively Naperville” title I am reinforced into thinking there is still a lot of what’s good.  It’s the spirit of Naperville’s people and your telling about them that I really appreciate.  Here’s a suggestion for Worldly Words: When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it – always.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

—John Harvard, Naperville

To PN:  I’ve been meaning to e-mail you about Project Vote Smart.  To find out about them, go to <www.votesmart.org>.  There is a 3-1/2 minute video that shows how to navigate the site.  They recently up-graded the site to be more user-friendly.  My recommendation is to add a link to them on your website so that your readers could profit by accessing this vast amount of data about politicians.  Unfortunately, not much information is available for Naperville city candidates, but there is more for state & national candidates. My wife & I spent two weeks in 2013 and one week in 2012 as volunteers at their ranch near Philipsburg, MT. —Bill Dixon, Naperville

Editor’s Note: We appreciate feedback and suggestions from our readers.  Going forward, readers might find a link to www.votesmart.org on various appropriate pages throughout this website. Thanks, Bill!
