At 2:38 PM on Thursday afternoon July 24, Naperville’s Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) received a 911 call from an occupant inside 400 E. Ogden reporting that there was a fire on the roof of the business. PSAP immediately dispatched a General Alarm assignment which brought 10 pieces of fire apparatus and 24 fire personnel to the scene. While enroute to the incident, PSAP relayed information to responding units that there was fire involvement to a vehicle located in a garage area of the business as well as fire involvement of the roof.
The first unit arrived on the scene at 2:42 PM. They confirmed that all occupants were safely out of the business and began a size-up of the situation. The initial fire company deployed a hose line to the fire area and initiated and aggressive attack bringing the fire under control at 2:47 PM. As additional fire units arrived they assisted with salvage and overhaul operations. The main body of the fire was confined to the roof and garage area.
The damage to the business is estimated to be approximately $75,000. An inspector from Naperville’s Transportation, Engineering and Development (TED) deemed the building habitable. The cause of the fire is attributed to roofers using a heat gun to apply patching materials on the roof. The Naperville Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Naperville Police Department. Fire units from the Plainfield and Wheaton Fire Departments provided station coverage during this incident.
There was one civilian transported to the hospital for minor burn injuries. There were no injuries to firefighters.
