‘Frank’s Way’: A Remembrance of Frank G. Slocumb, January 17, 2018

Frank Slocumb

Frank Slocumb died January 9, 2018. He was 72.

Frank touched many hearts during his leadership at Harris Bank in Naperville and upbeat involvement in activities throughout the community, always with our City’s best interests at heart, too.

During the trials and tribulations of recent health challenges, Frank and his wife, Kay, enjoyed traveling near and far, living life to the fullest, making the most of every day they had together.

Frank was formerly President of Harris Bank Naperville where he had regional outreach as well. He’s been a huge community supporter behind the scenes. He’s one of the most-liked, fun-loving and respected individuals I’ve ever known.

On a personal note, I’ll always remember that both our families moved to Naperville in 1993, only the Rotary Club of Naperville attracted Frank a couple years before I joined— and Rotary is where I first experienced his many kindnesses and good humor.

He spent his childhood in Oak Park-River Forrest and was a 1963 graduate of Oak Park River Forest High School. He received his BS degree in 1968 from Loyola University where he majored in political science and was a member of ROTC. (These details are the types of things you pick up during table talk at Rotary luncheons.)

After college, Frank served in the Army for two years. Last year he was among many local veterans recognized with a Quilt of Valor by the Rotary Club of Naperville, where he was a member for nearly 25 years.

Frank Slocumb, second from left, was among the first Rotarians to receive a Quilt of Valor for his military service. On numerous occasions afterward, he assisted in presentations to other members.

I like to think our paths crossed in many positive ways via Rotary Oktoberfest when it was held in a parking lot downtown, Naper Settlement events, School District 204 and all those fundraising dinners for the right reasons. And I’ll never forget his pride when he learned that Kay’s apple pie was the first- prize winner of the Naper Settlement Apple Pie Baking Contest back in 2014.

Off the top of my head—and certainly my memory of his contributions just scratches the surface— I recall Frank was an avid golfer and has served on the Board of Directors of Naperville Development Partnership, Edward Health Services, and the Millennium Carillon Foundation. He’s also been a supporter of the Naperville Riverwalk as well as an advocate for the Boy Scouts, United Way of Suburban Chicago and more.

Frank and Kay have one adult son, Jack.

Frank’s complete obituary is now posted at www.friedrichjones.com/obituaries/Frank-G-Slocumb.
