Naperville Gardener – Find peace and harmony

-

October is a good time to gently evaluate your successes and efforts that didn’t work out as well as you had hoped.

“Perfection is paralysis” has been my motto this summer. After going on several garden walks, I’ve learned to focus on being motivated to improve my gardens, not depressed that I am still fighting thistles and weeds—and that I have other things besides gardening that I must do.

I’ve been pleased with the border of assorted white annuals that surround some of my garden beds. Alyssum, lobelia, dianthus, dwarf snapdragons and vinca have not been on my bunnies’ menu again this year and are a lovely tapestry of white textures and shapes.

My peonies, however, are covered with mildew, so this month’s project is to dig them up, divide them and plant them in a sunnier spot.

October is the month to divide peonies, so here I go! When I planted the little darlings years ago, their neighbors (Rugosa Roses, Yankee Lady) were only three feet tall and had yet to spread out and grow. Now some turf wars have broken out and I am going to restore peace and harmony in that part of my garden.

And peace and harmony are what our gardens give to us. Just take a moment to find and experience them.
